I remember attending the Canton Fair with several little Japanese once… Afterward, everyone agreed to go visit Hong Kong and Macau together… Then the few of us went to the border crossing… What was extremely awkward/embarrassing was that they were all let through… whereas I holding a Chinese passport with a Japanese visa was instead stopped… The reason was because I didn’t have a Hong Kong/Macau travel permit… The several little Japanese asked me… Isn’t Hong Kong part of China… How come [we can but] you can’t go over… I awkwardly had nothing I could respond with… Forward/reshare.

I have the same experience. I was in Panyu, and a Japanese client wanted to go visit Macau, only for me to end up speechless.

All because of a second glance in the crowd.

Our company organized a trip to Huangshan. When passing by a restroom, my coworker wanted to go urinate. Coincidentally, several laowai also went in with him.
I was outside for no more than half a minute when he ran out.
“Done so fast?” With a weeping face, the coworker replied: “Sigh, I just don’t have the confidence to take it out! I’ll just wait a bit, I’ll just wait a bit…”

I’ve done this before as well. When I was in Dongguan, I went to a restaurant to eat with some coworkers where we ended up staring down some people from Zhejiang. After eating, they had 8 people come on motorcycles, and because the restaurant was in front of our factory, we called 20-some people out, with a vicious fight exploding. After the fight, we returned to the factory and went to bed, but not long later, the police came. They arrested several of us who had fought the most. I ran when I heard the police, and hid for a week, finally learning that it was because someone’s eardrum had been perforated. Fortunately, one of the supervisors on our side knew an official with the police station and treated him to dinner, KTV, and some prostitutes at Zhongming Hotel. In the end, the 5 of us who led the fight each only had to pay 1000 kuai to put the matter to rest! This was in 2005, I still remember it fondly.
