Caught: Is This Man A Shill For CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala?

Is this man a paid audience member for China's annual CCTV New Year's Eve Gala?

Sharp-eyed Chinese netizens have noticed that the same person has appeared in the audience of the annual CCTV Spring Festival Gala (New Year's Gala) for 10 years straight!

Chinese netizens recently discovered what they suspect to be a shill or plant (identified above) in the audience of the annual CCTV New Year’s Gala (aka Spring Festival Gala) television program broadcast on the eve of Chinese New Year. How?

They’ve spotted him on camera in the audience at every show since 2001!

This discovery, including screen captures and timestamps of each time he appears) seems to have been first posted on the popular Chinese internet discussion forum Tianya. It soon spread to other popular forums and portal websites such as Mop and NetEase, all receiving pages and pages of netizen comments.

Many Chinese netizens are not surprised that CCTV would have paid audience members in such a large and important show, but they do take delight in making fun of the man’s “robust” appearance and exuberant behavior. He has been nicknamed “Fat Brother” and “Smiling Face Brother” (or “Laughing Brother“) by various netizens referring to his size and how he is always enthusiastically applauding, laughing, or smiling whenever he appears on the screen.

“Fat Brother” has been compared to another famous CCTV Spring Festival Gala “regular”: Song Shanmu, the founder and director of well-known international Sun Moon Education Group who was accused and later convicted of raping female employees last year. Prior to the “tragedy” that befell him, netizens had caught him in the audience of CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala for six years, from 2005 to 2010, and dubbed him the program’s “most niu fan”:

Of course, Song Shanmu can no longer claim that title…

Tragedy will now befall this person as well… it is what always happens for those who get the attention of the onlookers [netizens, the Chinese public]…

Yet another Song Shanmu?

While watching the Spring Festival Gala, I suddenly hear someone roaring about this or that being “good, good, good”, with absolutely no character [class] at all. Turns out it was this stupid cunt.

网易广东省广州市网友:

Professional shill? [Someone] to let you know when you should laugh, and when you should cry!

网易浙江省湖州市网友:

The Spring Festival Gala is just like the most bars and nightclubs. It also uses shills. Otherwise there wouldn’t be enough atmosphere/people…

网易广东省江门市网友:

Really impressed by netizens’ eyes.

网易湖南省长沙市网友:

There has been media who said that “Smiling Brother” is surnamed Ran, presently lives in Beijing, is “involved in the arts”, and especially likes watching CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala.
Especially likes watching CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala? This too can be a reason/explanation?

网易广东省手机网友:

What a fatty…the Spring Festival Gala audience is a mysterious organization/collective.

What about 2011?

Don’t worry, enthusiastic Chinese netizens amused by the original poster’s revelation that “Fat Brother” has been in the audience every year over the past 10 years kept an eye open for him as they watched this year’s 2011 CCTV Spring Festival Gala. It can now be said that this suspected CCTV shill and plant now has a total proven attendance record of a full 11 years! With every sighting, netizens eagerly replied to the original Tianya post updating it to include screen captures of his appearances during this year’s show…
