CCTV’s Bi Fujian [a famous T.V. host] was suspended by the National Broadcasting Network after a video of him singing a song that defamed Chairman Mao went viral. In the video, which was filmed at a private dinner, the host had rearranged a classic “Red” song, adding his own lyrics which claimed Mao had “bitterly hurt” the Chinese people. CCTV said they had suspended all of Bi’s shows until further notice, describing his remarks as “having a major social impact”. Some netizens argued for the freedom of speech while others criticised the celebrity’s attacks on China’s Founding Father.
