A new mother died of heatstroke following advice from her family to “cover up” as part of the traditional Chinese practice of observing a one-month confinement period following childbirth. The Shanghai woman stayed in a room without any AC and covered herself with a quilt amidst daytime temperatures of 35 ℃ to avoid “wind chills” that might cause illness, but instead got heatstroke. The woman died after being sent to Fengxian Central Hospital for emergency treatment. One netizen said the postnatal practice “sucks”.
