Futuristic Russian Tram Impresses Chinese Netizens

Futuristic Russian tram.

From Sina Weibo:

@英国时报: Russia‘s new train and subway, predicted to go into operation next year, reminiscent of a futuristic tank.

Futuristic Russian tram.

Comments from Sina Weibo:

Wang Sicong: Dad, this train and subway… Dad: Buy!

[Note, Wang Sicong is a well-known fu er dai, the only son of billionaire Wang Jianlin of Dalian Wanda Group.]

Feels like it’d be rolling along and then suddenly transform.

If this were in our China, you’d have to wipe off the dust off it every two days.

If the Heavenly Kingdom [government] were to make this, it’d be cursed and berated to death, for being flashy but not practical, wasting taxpayers’ money, an image project.

[拜拜] Other people’s subway.

Am I the only person who thinks the exterior looks like a coffin…?

@Wang Sicong: Buy?

First of all, this is a tram, not a subway. Second, this is a concept, not the production model. Finally, the manufacturer said they can only start production at 2017 at the earliest. [拜拜] [拜拜]

If it doesn’t go into operation next year, the Weibo user [original poster] promises to delete his account.

I feel like if a robbery occurs on this train car, even a small knife would become a laser gun.

that design is very similar to the star wars IV sandcrawler

    • MonkeyMouth

      the Jawa bus?

      • mr.wiener

The one that looked like it was attacked by sandpeople…?

        • IsurvivedChina1©

Russian tram design – Jawa Sand Bus.

          • TCC

that one! It totally looks like one, even has the same angle at the front

        • MonkeyMouth

yuppers, mate. the big Jawa bus…its got that same shape, dont it?

  • Markus P

    I like it, very cool!

  • arterius2

even the interior is very futuristic as well! Like the cockpit of some space simulation game. I like it.

  • donscarletti

I just notice three things extremely stupid about this tram.

Firstly, the nose. It is tilted in a way that would force obstructions under the tram’s wheels, nomatter if they are debris or even people. At high speed, it would even force a layer of air under the tram and lower traction. There are very good reasons that trains are not shaped like this.

Secondly, the seats, too bulky, too few and too easily damaged. The long couch would be fine in a nightclub or cafe, but amongst strangers on a tram, the pressing needs are demarcation to say who’s arse should not cross which line and firmness, to stop people arses from naturally drifting into each other’s depressions. The individual seats use enough space to seat two commuters, purely in the name of looking cool.

Thirdly, materials. This thing is only going to look “super cool” when completely clean. Jokes about China being dirty aside, the general dust kicked up by tires, vehicle exhaust, hand prints from boarding and alighting passengers are going to make this thing look neglected and worn in a few days. Even the angling and the position of the glass panes is just asking to have gravel kicked up at them by passing cars or grazed by fenders. There is a reason windows are usually not at that level and don’t face down.

    Basically, stupid design.

    • mr.wiener

True, what China needs is good basic designs that can take a lot of hard knocks and are fast , safe and reliable… and lots of them.
This this is sexy, but sexy ain’t practical.

      • ninxay

A Chinese tram needs tank treads and steel armour plating… to protect against drunken Porsche drivers and Benz S500L’s squeezing and weaving everywhere.

      • Groucho

And it needs drains so that the floors can be washed after Chinese kids shit and piss everywhere.

        • Dr Sun

          troll often ?

          • it’s called social commentary
it’s supposed to make society better

          • ClausRasmussen

          • donscarletti

And bitching on an English language forum is going to change attitudes about this how?

          • You’d be a fool to underestimate the power of just talking about something, even if on a website you consider too distant to the issue.

          • donscarletti

The more you discus an issue inside a group already sharing the same consensus, the harder it becomes to relate to people outside this group and to reach them and set an example.

What one tends to find is groups frequently discussing an issue from a similar direction build their own set of terminology. One can see this now with “liberals” and “conservatives” (both misnomers) pretty much speaking completely mutually unintelligible dialects and approaching discussions from the starting point that only works for people who agree with them.

If you were to step out of the echo chamber and actually engage some of the people doing the things you don’t like, you might be able to understand them enough to change their attitudes.

        • mr.wiener

I was how long it would be before someone would mention that. Seriously have you ever seen this happen yourself?

          • Probotector

Seen kids piss and shit publicly? Yes, haven’t you?

          • mr.wiener

…on trains, not in the street.

          • ex-expat

I have (on the train)…multiple times.

          • loki

yep subways twice, and countless time at >> hallways, sidewalks, streets with traffic, highways, highway rest area, construction sites, dark alleys, dark areas in general, bushes, parks, mountain hiking, delta side road/ jogging paths, chinasmack, yahoo news, google images, facebook…

EDIT: HOLY crap forget youtube, youku, tudou

          • Groucho

Yup. I saw a kid take a crap on a Shenyang bus, and another take a piss on the Shanghai Metro Green line coming from Pudong.

          • mr.wiener

            Did anyone say anything?

          • Groucho

No. We talking mainland China here.

        • ClausRasmussen

It’s tiresome, you know that ?

      • 500,000,000 years of history

Not sure about most Chinese cities but the old double-deck trams in Hong Kong would be great for Qingdao. They just need to reinforce the body so it can push the cars that are illegally parked out of the way.

        • mr.wiener

A cow catcher at the front perhaps.

      • Mighty曹

        China needs trams with toilets.

        • that prints money everyone time you use it

          • Mighty曹

They better just settle on one that dispenses toilet tissues.

          • prints Zimbabwean money hows that

          • Mighty曹

and wipe their ass with it?

    • Andrew

“Jokes about China being dirty aside *”

This thing isn’t even Chinese. It’s Russian.

      • donscarletti

Just referring to netizen “树庄这孩子”‘s comment. My meaning is that even if it is not China, it will still get pretty dirty pretty fast, I didn’t express it so well.

    • ClausRasmussen

      >> Firstly, the nose

Also think about snow. The nose would act as an inverted snow plow and easily be lifted up and be derailed even with moderate amount of snow on the tracks.

    • Kai

      Good observations.

I read on another article that the nose is designed that way to give the operator more visibility, so they can see things that could get hit or run over, to see and stop in time. Since it’s a tram, I doubt it’ll get to speeds high enough to force air under it and result in lower traction.

Concepts almost always look better than production models. Alas.

    • MonkeyMouth

think this is more of a ‘streetcar’ type train…perfect for mowing down pedestirians…

    • YourSupremeCommander

Basically, a Lambo or a Bugatti are real stupid too, costing 20x more than your corolla, can only seat 2, 8mpg, can’t use all its power on public roads, and looks out of fashion once a newer model comes out, right Mr. Frugal?

      • donscarletti

Actually the Aventador is a beautiful piece of engineering with speed and handling that actually match its price tag and fuel consumption.

If you had said that back in the Murciélago days would I have to agree with you. Can’t turn, impossible gearbox, crap suspension, 29 L/100 km in the city, dies randomly, no faster than BMW M5 which costs 1/6th of the price, etc.

The Bugatti at least does what it is supposed to. If you want a car to do 430km/h then that is what you pay. The Murciélago however has a top speed 100km/h slower and takes an extra second to get up to 100km/h but uses the same amount of fuel.

I won’t insult the Murciélago by comparing it with this tram as that car is it at least is quite fast and quite good looking, despite its practical drawbacks. This stupid tram looks like you styled your Corolla to look like an Murciélago. It runs as fast as a corolla and as reliably as a lambo.

    • IsurvivedChina1©

I think it’s cool – and I think you over thought a little on it!

  • ninxay

Like a Tron public transport unit but without glowing neon lights. The Shinkansen bullet train looked like it came from the 22nd century when it first came out but it looks totally boring now. The same could happen to this concept.

In China, it’ll look like a 50’s relic after enough people have spat, pissed and shat on the floor.

    • Ah_FQ

Criticizing China this way is just foreign interference in our country affairs, why not talk about American pee and shit on native Indian land? You have not received U.S. government money?

      • ninxay

Another 5 mao for you, mate. If you’re really Chinese, then you would definitely know that spitting, pissing and shitting in public are commonplace in China.

And what the fuck is a “native Indian floor”?

        • Probotector

He means America is stolen land from Native Americans.

          • MonkeyMouth

ya, he means that someone has to be PERFECT in order to criticize anything

        • Ah_FQ

Fifty Cent Party exists only in minds of American and Chinese traitor propaganda, you cannot tell me anything about China, China has 5000 years of history and profound culture you foreigners can not understand. And of course you do not know your own country genocide, your foreign brainwashing textbooks only tell you America is the great democratic country, you should learn the true history from us Chinese!

  • lacompacida

Love those seats. Great for sleeping on the subway.

  • Guang Xiang

If it’s a tram, it will work. Anything else would be unpractical.

  • SonofSpermcube

That’s the train to Nova Prospekt.

  • vincent_t

Sell it to Japan and very soon we will see hankie pankie things on the comfortable long bench…

    • ninxay

Praise Japan and their creativity with public transport… I wonder who cleans up the sticky mess on the floor after those videos.

  • Surfeit

All it needs now is a black man on there to be shot at, or a gay person to be persecuted, or … … …

  • Mighty曹

Drunk Russian engineers + upside down blueprint = Futuristic Tram

  • a.w.

Solve your problems with Ukraine first Russia….

  • YourSupremeCommander

The real question is, does it make a stop at Kuala Lumpur?

  • Probotector

Actually, he really thinks it is.

  • It’s going to require some creativity if you want to take a dump on this tram. It’s ain’t your grandfather Guangzhou subway train.

  • mike921

Gee, will they let stray dogs on it, like they do on the Moscow subways? Russia – still the 3rd world….

  • Hmm, this new Russian train looks familiar. It reminds me of another train I saw in eastern Europe once…
