Girl Burned by Resentful Pursuer Dissatisfied with Payout

Girl Burned by Resentful Pursuer Dissatisfied with Payout

A girl from Hefei who rejected the advances of a crazed pursuer suffered severe burns when he poured gasoline over her face and neck, and then set her alight. Zhou Yan, who was just 16 at the time, had her own family rush to her rescue, who put out the flames and sent her to hospital. The offender was sentenced to 12 years in jail and ordered to pay 1,720,000 RMB in compensation to his victim, but Zhou Yan says the money isn’t enough to offset her counselling fees and deformity. Netizens had mixed reactions, some saying the money is more than enough, others saying the compensation would be far higher in the US.

“Netizens had mixed reactions, some saying the money is more than enough,”
    Jesus wept.

Yeah seriously. I have no idea how to quantify “enough” money in this case.

Is there enough money in the world to make you able to walk around comfortably looking like Freddy Krueger’s sister?

While payouts would be much higher in America, but that is for Americans, not Chinese. Not all people worth the same.

I will give you props for this: sometimes, it’s really hard to tell whether you’re trolling or just stupid.

Yes, and the medical expense will be way higher in the U.S., and finally you might again pay those from your own pocket.

Did this attack happen a few years ago? When I clicked on the link there was a picture of the same girl in one of the older stories (related posts). Anyone know if it’s the same girl? I think it is. Anyways I would never criticize the money received by her as excessive since no amount of money is really enough and I also wouldn’t compare it to what she’d receive in the US.

Yes, it seems to be the same girl. She is from the same city and the guy is the son of a government official. Of course comparing things to another country is not useful but we can see what her supporters are saying. In the U.S. in addition to getting money from a suit, the guy would be in jail for 10-20 years (depending on if they could only get him for attempted murder). In the other story they never say if the guy who did this to her is even in jail.
