Hong Kong female tour guide has physical altercation with mainland tourists, allegedly caused by [the latter] not shopping
Summary: On the 5th, a physical altercation occurred between a Hong Kong tour guide and mainland tourists in To Kwa Wan of Kowloon, Hong Kong, where 4 people suffered injuries were then sent to the hospital, and are now detained at the Hong Kong Hong Hum police station for investigation. The tourists claim that they were taken to a jewelery store to shop, but because they did not buy anything, the tour guide use foul language to hurl abuse at them, thus resulting in the quarrel.
Translation of the above cartoon: “Don’t shop and I’ll scold you!” screams “a certain tour guide” in “Hong Kong” at a “mainland tour group” while “a certain travel agency” holds a “zero base salary” knife to her back. The cartoon suggests that Hong Kong tour guides may mistreat mainland tourists because they are forced by travel agencies to rely only on commissions earned when the tourists spend money shopping at the stores that the tour guides take them to.
Summary of above Guangdong Satellite TV news report video:
- The man (Zhang) tells the camera that the tour guide discriminates against the mainland, insults mainland tourists, and physically hit them.
- The woman in red is the Hong Kong tour guide who had brought them to a jewelery store in To Kwa Wan and required them to stay there for two hours without leaving.
- The woman interviewed says the tour guide said they were poor people, insulting them by relating a story about some mainland tourists bringing a box of instant noodles to eat, that they don’t spend enough, cursing them that they will be unhappy the entire year because they are not being happy these few days (by spending money), “and many many other unpleasant things to scold and insult” them. She then says her sister and brother-in-law (the Zhang couple) got up, went up to argue with the tour guide, and then they got into a fight.
Summary of the above TVS1 news report video:
- The news anchorwoman begins by referring to the well known “Ah Zhen” incident from the middle of last year referring to Li Qiaozhen, a Hong Kong tour guide who made the news after she was recorded lecturing, insulting, and threatening a bus full of mainland tourists for not spending enough money on their tour (YouTube | Youku). She later apologized on television.

Comments from NetEase:
I’ve been in Shenzhen for 8 years and I was sick of Hong Kong after just going just once. Other than shopping, there is nothing much worth seeing, nothing of interest at all. Everyone don’t go to Hong Kong anymore. In this day and age, what big city isn’t the same as any other?
Chinese just love to cheat Chinese, though of course they sometimes don’t consider themselves Chinese.
Hong Kong tour guides indeed are really bad. I had an experience before, when I went to Hong Kong in 2005, where the tour guide arranged for us to go to a watch store to shop. The moment the door shut, we couldn’t even get out, couldn’t even find the door, and were stuck there for 2 hours. Several of us later only escaped after finding the employee entrance. Now that I think about it, it was all very frightening.
Haha, it was the same when I went to Hong Kong vacationing with my parents. We were locked in a jewelery store…couldn’t even find a door…my father searched for the door N times.
Just came back from that lousy place in the past month. It can be said that the tour guides basically force people to shop. Just like what those above said, trapping you in [a store].
Hong Kong’s tourism industry will sooner or later be in trouble!
In this day and age, people are still going to Hong Kong for vacation? You think Hong Kong is still the Hong Kong of the past?
Hong Kong people are all people who went over from the mainland, everyone knows this. Genuine Hong Kong people simply do not discriminate. It is you people who have an inferiority complex. This tour guide too must be like that Ah Zhen person, having only immigrated there in the past generation or this generation, and thus having that so-called superiority complex.
Those who have been to Hong Kong Airport all know how cold the workers and staff are!
[The reason] Hong Kong is convenient because it is very small. [The reason] Hong Kong people don’t spit wherever they please the fines are very expensive…Hong Kong tour guides bully people is because their salaries are too low…so we can’t judge, it is just life…
Tour guides are all disgusting, worse than even hostesses and prostitutes. No matter what, prostitutes are at least earning money depending on their bodies, whereas tour guides only know how to swindle people! Disgusting!
If you’re going to travel, why go to Hong Kong? If you want to shop, why not go to plenty of places in Europe or America, where both the service is good and the products are cheap. Hong Kong is just one big city of China, there’s no need to mythologize it like back before [mainland China] reformed and opened up.
Bastard Hong Kong tour guides, they’re really going too far. If it weren’t for the mainland, how could you have the good lives you have?
The 3 defendants in the Hong Kong tour guide and mainland tourists fighting case receive 12 months probation
In the case where a Hong Kong female tour guide and the Zhang couple from Anhui and part of a tour group to Hong Kong got into an argument and physical fight, the three defendants on the 7th at a Hong Kong court were given light sentences of 1000 HKD bond and 12 months probation.
The Zhang couple gave a statement outside the court through their lawyer, stating that this unforgettable Hong Kong trip has reached a “satisfactory conclusion”, that in the short few days they have been in Hong Kong they have experienced both good and bad, that they hope their trip will end like most tourists without having to experience court procedures, as the two of them will return to the mainland on the afternoon of the 7th.
The incident occurred on the third day of the Chinese New Year (February 5th), when the Zhang couple, allegedly because they weren’t willing to be forced to spend money shopping, were scolded as dogs by female tour guide Lin Rurong, a physical fight occurred, and all three involved claiming that they were injured. The police arrested and charged the three people with the crime of fighting in public.
All three pleaded not guilty at court on the 7th, agreeing to sign a commitment to watch their behavior, meaning that they will personally guarantee that they will not commit such a crime again. The prosecution made the charge without providing evidence, and the three individuals agreed to the relevant arrangements. Finally, they were sentenced to sign a 1000 HKD bond and 12 months probation, during which they may not use violence or threats in Hong Kong.
Female tour guide Lin Rurong refused to comment on the incident as she left the court. Mr. Zhang stated on the afternoon of the 6th that he received female tour guide Lin Rurong’s apology letter, indicating that this incident was “a misunderstanding”, that he is very satisfied with the tour guide and the travel agency’s service, and that the incident has been resolved.
Of the mainland tour group from which this incident occurred, the rest of the tour group’s members had already parted their separate ways. Some of the tour group members have gone to Macau, whereas other tour group members remain vacationing in Hong Kong.
