Liu Qian’s Gay Wong Leehom Joke on CCTV Spring Festival Gala

One of the biggest trending topics on popular Chinese microblogging service Sina Weibo and the overall Chinese internet during this year’s CCTV Spring Festival Gala show…

From NetEase:

Liu Qian and Li Yundi “Get Leehom” Line Falls Descends Into Rashomon Effect

At CCTV’s Year of Snake Spring Festival Gala last night, magician Liu Qian‘s teasing of pianist Li Yundi and singer Wong Leehom has become the hottest topic of the show. Then at noon today, a reporter from found that a netizen exposed that just as Liu Qian finished his magic show and went backstage, Wong Leehom charged up to him and slapped him on the face, with those around simply unable to restrain him!

Ever since Li Yundi and Wong Leehom played the piano together during the Year of the Dragon Spring Festival Gala in 2012, the “gay friendship” between the two has no doubt become a major focus of the entertainment world. Even though the two did not d a joint-performance again in this year’s Gala, the teasing and joking about them went on. When it came to Wong Leehom’s performance, he was teased that he was separated from Li Yundi by 19 shows. In particular, during the Li Yundi and Liu Qian joint magic show “Magic Piano“, as Li Yundi struggled to understand Liu Qian’s signals and after some whispering between them, Liu Qian unexpectedly shouted to the entire country’s audience, “Looking for someone? Get Leehom!” Li Yundi immediately looked awkward, forcing Liu Qian to save the situation, “Sorry, sorry, this year, it’s me, I haven’t got a hold of Dong Qing.” With regards to Liu Qian’s show, netizens applauded it as the best part of the night, greatly amusing everyone.

But on KDNet discussion forum this noon [February 11], this reporter found that a netizen had posted a screenshot saying Liu Qian Liu has “gotten himself into big trouble.” In the screenshot, a netizen named “黑色微笑” revealed on his weibo that something happened at that night’s CCTV Spring Festival Gala: “Wong Leehom found Liu Qian backstage and gave him a huge slap.” Soon other netizens claimed that they were also at the scene, that Dong Qing was changing clothes backstage at the time, while Guo Degang and Yu Qian were rehearsing their lines, that “none of them made a sound,” while “Leehom could not be restrained”.

CCTV Spring Festival Gala Official Microblog Issues Statement

This reporter then noticed that in the hour after the end of the Spring Festival Gala, the official microblog of the CCTV Spring Festival Gala made a statement that they have already deleted that particular segment. The microblog also issued a special statement: “In the just ended Year of Snake CCTV Spring Festival Gala, the part where Liu Qian teased Li Yundi and Wong Leehom was not planned by the directing team but rather an on-the-spot improvisation and purely individual act of Liu Qian. The replay of the show has already had that segment cut.”

Was “Get Leehom” pre-planned or not? Every side has already fallen into the Rashomon effect. According to the media, Li Yundi has denied that the line was scripted and claims it was improvised. “I also didn’t know what he would be saying”. However, Liu Qian for his part denies it was something he added impromptu, “No, this was something that was previously already rehearsed”. (Source: CQNews)

Stop fighting, everybody already knows it.

This society lost its moral and bottom-lines long ago. It’s just performers outing someone’s homosexuality and then getting in a fight over it! A little impromptu improvisation still won’t touch the bottom-line! So continue adding improvisations!

别吃三叶虫 [网易湖北省武汉市网友]:

Know why the piano suddenly stopped and then Yundi stuck his head out? If not for this “Get Leehom” line then what?

网易广西手机网友: (responding to above)

Yeah, why else would he suddenly stop playing the piano and stick out his head if not for that line? If it weren’t planned beforehand, why would Liu Qian run over there? If it weren’t planned beforehand, where did all the A4 paper that Li Yundi threw in the air come from? A bunch of SB.

网易浙江省杭州市手机网友: (responding to above)

I think so too. The part of sticking his head out was completely unnecessary.

Fuck your mother, Liu Qian, you’re nothing but a traveling con artist, just looking at your face makes me want to slap it. You motherfucking are nothing more than a vaudeville swindler who makes a living traveling around. Hurry and die, motherfucker, just seeing you disgusts me…

网易山东省临沂市网友: (responding to above)

Why do you hate Liu Qian this much? Did he fuck your mother or your wife?

The CCTV Gala must not be, under any circumstances, fun.

    • mr.wiener

It woulda been more fun if they’d had a camera backstage evidently.

      • Dr Sun

        so it would seem

  • mr.wiener

Best way to respond to someone teasing you for being gay? Run up to them backstage and slap them, no doubt whilst screaming abuse at them in a high pitched voice……

    • Lucy Li

Accept the fact that it never happened =.=…

  • pandapanda

Halfway through the text wall here I was none the wiser.

  • Zhegezhege

    It’s Japan’s fault!

    • linette lee

      …………It’s Japan’s fault!……..

Some East Asian countries have the worst fashion style. So gay! Gayness overload. Men supposed to dress like men. Not whitening creme and bb creme and girly hairstyle and girly clothes. So faggot. hahahaah….lol Imagine your boyfriend dress like this walking next to you. hhaha….

      • Hongwu Emperor

        That’s western influence to ya…
        Bring back hanfu damn it!!

        • the ace of books

While we’re at it, let’s bring back plate armour! Show me a guy riding a motorcycle wearing plate armour and I will show you a bad-ass mother fucker.

          • Hongwu emperor

            Yeah, that’s a good idea.

And like MonkeuMouth said hanfu is very beautiful. In my opinion [no nationalism involved ok? just my opinion] is the most beautiful clothing in the human history. We should seriously bring it back!!! be it the peasant type [like those we see in painting like that of Zhang Zeduan] or the ones used by civil servants, ministers, etc [like paintings of emperors, confucius, etc]

          • I agree hanfu is very beautiful it looks classy, I wish I have one. Most traditional clothes looks really good because they are no longer common. I would like to see people wear hanfu.

          • the ace of books

            HOLY FUCK YES

I WANT TO BE THAT GUY

          • the ace of books

            Also: my turn to?

          • to show us a bad ass mother fucker, you wrote you’ll show us a bad-ass motherfucker if someone show you a guy riding a motorcycle wearing plate armour. Thats a lot of bad ass in one sentence.

          • the ace of books

Well, it’s a figure of speech, but I’ll oblige:

        • MonkeyMouth

hanfu is actually very very beautiful……

Are you numbnut? How’s Japan even relevant to this?

chinese feel about japan in the same way blacks feel about whites

      • Erick

        I think it’s just a joke :))

  • Liu Qian is the worst magician in the world.

    • the ace of books

Every time I watch him perform, I think about how that trick might be pulled off. Magicians aren’t supposed to make you first think “okay what’s the trick”.

      • Rick in China

Too bad he wasn’t a contestant on Penn and Teller’s Fool Us, so the rest of China could see how the rest of the world’s magicians would call his tricks trivial at best.

        • n00brush

It’s one thing to criticize China’s many problems.

It’s quite another thing to talk down everything that has to do with China just cause you are a non-Chinese man with a small dick.

Your comment pertains to the latter case.

  • linette lee

    so gay.

  • Kate

He’s calling someone gay while wearing tight ass leather pants and high studded calf boots? He’s looks a bit like a girl to me to be honest.

      You married a Korean.

      • Kate

Point being? I wish I could get my guy to dress up or even wash his face regularly…..and he hates shopping.

That is so funny. This dude is like a gay version of Leehom Wang.
Leehom wang dress like the boy next door or a rock star. Not girly like this dude.

  • Hongwu Emperor

That is the despicable poison that offends our ancestors, this bickering is pointless! people are bickering over an senseless dispute in regards to clothing style, but in the end they should revolt against that western influence that is invading our lands!!!

    • mr.wiener

We’re talking Taiwan here, which invasion would that be? The Portugese, Dutch, Chinese, Japanese or Americans?

    • hess

Yeah, it’s not like the opposition to Homosexuality in China started AFTER influence from christians and muslims

      • Hongwu emperor

and what is that related to my previous comment? I was just angry that people are calling his clothing ‘this’ or ”that’ instead of criticizing all kinds of non-chinese clothing.

Nationalists often cry ‘manchu clothing’ is ‘foreign’ while wearing stupid suits, jackets, etc… believe in me, that western clothing is ‘dressing like a waiguoren’ just like some nationalists say that manchurian/mongolian clothing is not chinese [they are also right, it was only adopted or forced during certain periods].

So when they say ‘manchu clothing is not chinese’ I also say ‘you are right, but western clothing is also not chinese, so people now cannot complain about the Qing, for example’

        • hess

My mistake, I thought you were talking about homosexuality as a “western influence”

          • Hongwu emperor

Oh, that’s not the point sorry. I was criticizing all kind of western clothing, be it ‘manly’ or ‘girly’. xD

homossexuality on the other hand is something very old, and not all societies regard it the same way our current one regards [some being more authoritative and oppressive or not]

    • dim mak

Oh god, stop with the hanfu movement nonsense

Every nationalist’s top priority should be halting the advance of western ideology into the East, clothing is irrelevant

      • Hongwu emperor

Nationalism or not, clothing is part of ideology and culture sometimes. for example, communist countries have [had] dress-codes that forbid some dressing and favored another ones [just like China back in the culture revolution every1 had to use mao suits, etc] or some coutnries that ban indecent clothing in regards to morality/their religion, etc.

clothing is to some extent just a part of the massive advance of western ideology into what you call ‘East’ so… that’s why chinese are using western suits, etc etc. clothing is not that irrelevant, is just a small slice of the huge problem that involves western cultural infiltration.

And I’m not talking about that in a nationalist sense (which would be the west likes this so we will not like it etc etc) but in also a cultural and ritual sense. that’s why the classic of rites Lijing even states how a Shenyi [basic hanfu design] should be made, etc

        • what is the rites of Lijing can you explain? what ritual rites requires hanfu? is not it just a national clothing?

          • Hongwu emperor

Late reply: Lijing is the classic of rites, a book that explains proper Li [ritual] of the western zhou dynasty. and there is also the book of rites with different detail about And I dont know what rites are you specifically refering to, the mourning ones [funeral],etc etc

          • oh right thanks for the explanation

  • Cleo

  • Probotector

What’s GayAznBoy’s take on all this?

    • Gay Azn Boi

      Never watched the CCTV gala.

      • El Puma R.

Lucky you man, never having a political family forcing you to watch some lame TV show as if it was the right thing to do.

        • Gay Azn Boi

Idk man…the show just seems so fake…the dancing, singing, smiles…everything.

          • El Puma R.

Fake in China goes far beyond that TV show… lol

    • Gay Azn Boi

And thanks for thinking of me :)

  • the ace of books

I’ve never been much endeared by Liu Qian’s smarmy face. But that’s just me. I bet he has legions of fanthings.

  • MonkeyMouth

why dont they just kiss and make up? sincerely doubt that this was scripted….
anyone remember what phil collins said during the 1993(might have to double check) grammys? after all these hip hop acts and r/b acts kept winning, phil said… “getting a little dark in here”. just throwing that out there. this stuff just happens. ‘its just words’, to paraphrase the great Frank Zappa and no need to get your panties in a bunch

  • Gay Azn Boi

Hmm. Personally, I’m not particularly attracted to Asian guys, but I have to say that Li Yundi and Wang Lee Hom do look cute together. All the best to them.

    • SuperHappyCow

disclaimer for your own race. apt

    • dim mak

I-I-I bet we would look cute together t-too

      • Gay Azn Boi

Lol. Do you have a pic? :)

        • dim mak

but mom told me not to put personal stuff on the internet

          • Gay Azn Boi

Yeah but I would need to see your pic to know whether we look cute together.

  • Phressh

Bitch slapping that mofo is the way to go Leehom, u should have kicked his ass crotch too.

  • El Puma R.

who cares about someone being picked on ’cause he’s gay?

Oh I know… Probably all the audience, which is far from acceptable. A regular Chinese person can talk about music as much as Hitler could talk about tolerance. And they take their favorite artist’s homosexuality as a personal offense.

Chinese new year was WAY more fun when I only had my foreign friends to hang out with.

Yeah Liu qian you tell’em man !

  • vincent

Cecilia Miao you got Lee-Hom’s name wrong, it’s Wang not Wong.

    • it was on purpose because Wang is offensive remember?

      • vincent

Oh Yeah! Totally forgot about that :D

  • ehh…? i think liu qian is crazy……. -.-

  • Freak on a Mountain

Isn’t this a case of ‘it takes one to know one’? I’ve thought Liu Qian was queer ever since I first saw him on Chinese TV. Then again, my gaydar is not especially developed. Gay Azn Boi, help please.

  • Hongwu Emperor

    Hello there Gerhana!

I’m just poting here to help you on that hanfu stuff.

Hanfu is the chinese clothing, prior to the manchu invasion [1644] and the westernization of china [post 1911].

It was worn by all people, from peasants up untill the emperor with variations according to rank, status, ritual uses, etc.

For example, an ceremonial dress is called Pianfu, which was commonly worn by the nobility,scholar-bureaucrats,etc.

Shenyi is the standard version of the hanfu, semi-formal/formal. there are many versions and variations, each one going according to the formality [ritual, ceremonial or simply normal wear] etc etc.

For example, in confucian ceremonies, people usually wear the xuanduan, which is the formal version of the hanfu, usually dark-colored. It’s an simplified version of the court clothing worn by the emperor, ministers and high officials. [which is called Mianfu, commonly seen in emperor paintings such as Qin shihuang, Han wudi, etc]

Another noteworthy part, is that [specially for men] hats are important to define the rank in society, or the use in a ceremony. For example mian guan is a hat used only by the emperor, and some nobles [in ceremonies] and so on…
