i think there is almost one movie every year

    • 十月码

Yep! Because it’s one of the “Four Great Works in Ancient China”, and almost everybody born in 80s and 90s watch TV or animation series of it when they were children.

I have seen two movies that were based on the “Journey to the West” theme. At the time, I didn’t know what that was. When I first started to watch each of them, my first thought was: “Oh boy, I just wasted 2 hours of life that I’m never going to get back!”, but I could not stop watching the DVD. Then I want to see it again and again. So it grows on me. I tend to have this same reaction to many movies that are made by Chinese, for Chinese. It is interesting how I first hate the movie, but then grow to enjoy it many times. The Chinese movies I have seen all have a very different style of combination action and slapstick humor that is exclusively Chinese.

i guess you didn’t see many chinese movies, recent movies are more and more western style, even the clothes are old but the style tend to be more and more western…. take a look at the monsters in

Zhong Kui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal

the wester inspiration is quite obvious

Kinda hard to not be so popular when they won’t let foreign movies be released against it. I think we all know by now, that when China releases “blockbusters” they are put only against other weak Chinese movies.

    • Zappa Frank

in fact chinese blockbusters are popular just in china

  • WghUk

People go there to watch the effects and not the storyline.

  • Amused

And I thought Spiderman and Batman movies were overdone…

  • Foreign Devil

worked for a company that was going to do this film back in 2008. . we got to pre-production but then the money was squandered and the production canned. Lot’s of great pre-production concept art was basically thrown out. . Yes probably every year some people in China made an animation series, TV show or film based on this property.

  • Chris Bullock

I still watch the crazy version made in the 1970s..
