Nursing Homes Sets Alight, Reaction Slow, Disabled Perish

A nursing home complex in a village in Lushan at which a fire broke out has claimed the lives of 38 of its residents. Eyewitnesses said that at least 10 buildings were destroyed in the incident, which housed many elderly people incapable of walking. Relatives waited anxiously as rescue services entered to assist those trapped inside, with the first rescue apparently occurring an entire 35 minutes after the onset of the blaze. The cause of the fire was put down to an electrical fault, with the buildings’ metal and foam construction being blamed for the ease at which it spread.

Problems facing China which will continue to bedevil it in the future will be just this.. aging population , changes in how to deal with this that are govt supplied or private enterprise and lots of infrastructure shortcomings that will always be playing catch up.
I hate to play the alarmist or what if?…but Japan was in a similar position to China before WW2.

Japan before WWII was in a position where the Prime Minister would be assassinated by radicals seeming every few weeks. Japan was growing by a million people every year and could be considered “young and angry”. More akin to the China of the Cultural Revolution than the China today.

True, but I’m looking a few years down the track. A exploding population come in from the countryside for jobs that are no longer there in the cities. Industry owned by a small cliche of narrow minded nationalists , an assertive army and political powers on the frontiers that seem to make their own rules…Not a perfect fit for all these, but most of the pieces are there.

Out with the old in with the new. Ad in the paper tomorrow in Lushan “New construction site in prie location just opened up for development. Taking bribes ummm… BIDS at local party office.
