A nursing home complex in a village in Lushan at which a fire broke out has claimed the lives of 38 of its residents. Eyewitnesses said that at least 10 buildings were destroyed in the incident, which housed many elderly people incapable of walking. Relatives waited anxiously as rescue services entered to assist those trapped inside, with the first rescue apparently occurring an entire 35 minutes after the onset of the blaze. The cause of the fire was put down to an electrical fault, with the buildings’ metal and foam construction being blamed for the ease at which it spread.
