A corrupt official who accepted close to 2 million RMB in bribes was so tight with money that he often took the bus to the outskirts to buy cheap tofu. Former chief of the Zhenjiang Civil Defense Office Zhu Dongsheng accepted bribes, flexed his authority over approvals, and traded power for money, but also fretted about gasoline costs, wore faded old clothes and ate to little cost. Zhu was sentenced to 11 years by Zhenjiang Intermediate People’s Court for accepting bribes, also having 500,000 RMB of property seized. Considering the sums involved, many netizens considered him to be “a clean official”.
