Shanghainese Fight on Metro Laughed At by Northeasterners

The following video has been spreading on China’s Twitter-like Sina Weibo microblogging service. Previously, it spread on popular Chinese social networks RenRen and QQ. The most viewed copy of the video on Chinese video sharing website Youku currently has over 1.5 million views.

On Youku:

Two Shanghainese fight, one Northeasterner provides commentary

In China, the stereotype of Northeasterners (or dong bei ren) is that they are quick to resort to physical violence. Shanghainese (or shang hai ren), especially men, are stereotyped as people who may argue verbally but will rarely resort to physical violence. Some say this shows that they are more refined and civilized. Others say this shows they are soft and weak.

The video of two allegedly Shanghainese men on the Shanghai Metro includes many silly Street Fighter sound effects. Most of the commentary by the “dong bei ren” sportscaster is also rather silly and actually not so funny, especially when translated into English. Some of his more funny comments are about deducting points from one of the men for exposing his “little white underwear” on camera and the “snowy whiteness” of their arms.

Comments from Sina Weibo:

这个囧

Very calm commentary…

罗贵平:

Fuckniu

老杨滴围脖:

Shanghainese people are much too refined/cultured when fighting.

微博搞笑排行榜:

LOL, everyone keep your composure!

蔡志刚1:

My god, I can’t keep my composure, for such a boring competition to have such exciting commentary.

布玩美:

I spit out laughing, the commentator is a genius, the people fighting are real amusing too.

enail1981:

Shanghainese people generally only argue and don’t become physical! That they actually became physical this time is truly impressive!

倪夏雄:

Looks like the blue side lost.

Comments from Youku:

卡玛其多:

Dong bei ren are just impressive talkers, what happened with 9.18? Gong Hanlin, Pan Changjiang, Xiao Shengyang, aren’t they all dong bei ren? Who also especially love pretending to be Shanghainese or Cantonese people being sissies/feminine.

Trying to hide your shame many times is counterproductive, don’t you know? What if this was a Shanghainese person? Mind yourself and it’ll be enough.

One place’s people making fun of another place’s people, is there really a point? What a joke.

东北爷们5858:

Like women. Northeastern men are simply more manly than those fake Southern men, who talk too much. Two men actually fighting for four minutes and then just getting off the train, this would be impossible in even a Northeastern primary school. But of course, we can’t have such high expectations of them. After all, what flows in their bones isn’t the blood of warriors. [They] don’t have any manliness at all.

SB.

Southerners who can’t even speak putonghua [Mandarin], apart from having a lot of children and increasing population pressure for China, out of 10, 8 of them are all dwarfs, no wonder they’re called piglets.

Stop pretending you know shit, the Red Army in the very beginning was [composed of] us Fujian and Jiangxi people, so what the hell are you Northerners hollering about? Not always fighting is us Southerners not wanting to create bigger problems. Southerners fighting can destroy your entire village, you don’t know shit.

小绵羊杀手2号: (responding to above)

You’re stupid, do you know where the Communist Party was formed? It is only in Beijing because it was an ancient city with a good location. Do you understand?

上海石库门女人:

That’s not Shanghai, Shanghai’s subway has rings on the handle bars, which shows how sinister the person who made the video is. Plus, did any of you hear any Shanghainese? This will only fool/trick the brain dead.

尸灵魂魄: (responding to above)

It’s Shanghai. The Line 1 Metro terminal station. It’s right where I am. I even rode this train too, just not this train car!

nazma:

Motherfucking, is that old woman a stupid cunt? Just fucking who is she with anyway? Fuck.

Many of the comments on Youku (and elsewhere) are like the above, using the video to prove and argue their biases and stereotypes of other people.

What do you think? Does this video represent Shanghainese people? Southerners? Are Northerners more manly?

Through her tireless translation of popular Chinese internet news and phenomenon, her English has apparently gotten dramatically better. At least, reading and writing-wise. Unfortunately, she's still not confident enough to have written this bio, about herself, by herself.
