The Mainland version of Taiwan drama Meteor Garden, which catapulted Barbie Hsu and F4 to superstardom and started an era of ‘idol dramas’, recently premiered on Hunan TV. The show, called Meteor Rain, has received mostly negative reactions from the Chinese audience, who has renamed it ‘Thunderstorm’. The original manga, Hana Yori Dango, has also been adopted into dramas in both Japan and Korea.

From Mop:
Hunan TV shanzhai shocking Meteor Rain, Brother, Spare Me!
Hunan TV’s versions of Ugly Betty, Smile Pasta, I can still accept. This Meteor Garden…back then…I was its loyal fan. This is too damaging to the F4 in my imagination. Especially the one who plays Hua Ze Lei [Vic Zhou's character in TW version], damn!! He has the face of a donkey.
In the show, they even say that he’s the most pensive, most charming prince on a white horse!!!!
Kao, which prince charming would look like him!!!
Kao, I can’t bear to keep watching!!!
The one who plays Dao Ming Si [Jerry Yang's character], kao, he thinks he knows English…saying ‘so what’ all the time. Did he go to school? This line is the most lei, when he tells his sister, ‘You have to let me leave this place, “because” I hate it here. Damn, when I went to kindergarten, I showed off my English like that too.
Ai..Why am I so angry? China has 1.3 billion people, how can we not find better actors!!
Japan’s filmed it, Taiwan’s filmed it, Korea’s filmed it.
We filmed it last, and made it into a joke, it’s embarrassing.
Look how much face you [Hunan TV] lost for China! Using laptops and sneakers to show off how rich the characters are supposed to be…peasant!! Came from antiquity!!! Kao, I’m so angry!!!

观光土豆:
Very 囧, very shanzhai…none of the cars in it are worth more than 400,000 RMB, and they’re all Chinese cars…And they’re supposed to be rich…
观光土豆:
Do not resemble super rich kids at all, don’t even resemble new money. Peasants pretending to be rich. Seriously does not compare to Taiwan.
mickieyy:
All the product placement are too completely obvious.
观光土豆:
Koreans are infamous for supporting their own products. There are many Korean products in their shows. Why is it that when the Chinese do this we’re called peasants?
ywzyqh:
Actually, it’s not too terrible…haha…after all it’s Mainland produced…as a Mainland show…there’s already improvement. If compared to Taiwan, Japan, and Korea…the production budgets are on different levels…so there’s no comparison…I believe Mainland dramas will one day have their own style, and it’s not about who spent more in filming or how luxurious the show appears…this is my opinion…if you don’t like it, pretend these characters are invisible…haha
う帆ズ魜:
I’m speechless…product placement for car, shampoo, shoes…ai…why did they have to make it like this…the hairstyles…speechless. But I still support Chinese products…even the cars.
观光土豆:
Please, its not as 雷 as people say on the internet. If it is, then don’t watch it. Support Chinese productions. Show patriotism.
观光土豆:
The Koreans have better not see this! Embarrassing!
观光土豆:
Can’t take this anymore, I’m afraid I’ll die throwing up.
