Mainland Version Of Meteor Garden TV Drama Bashed

The Mainland version of Taiwan drama Meteor Garden, which catapulted Barbie Hsu and F4 to superstardom and started an era of ‘idol dramas’, recently premiered on Hunan TV. The show, called Meteor Rain, has received mostly negative reactions from the Chinese audience, who has renamed it ‘Thunderstorm’. The original manga, Hana Yori Dango, has also been adopted into dramas in both Japan and Korea.

Meteor Rain

From Mop:

Hunan TV shanzhai shocking Meteor Rain, Brother, Spare Me!

Hunan TV’s versions of Ugly Betty, Smile Pasta, I can still accept. This Meteor Garden…back then…I was its loyal fan. This is too damaging to the F4 in my imagination. Especially the one who plays Hua Ze Lei [Vic Zhou's character in TW version], damn!! He has the face of a donkey.

In the show, they even say that he’s the most pensive, most charming prince on a white horse!!!!

Kao, which prince charming would look like him!!!

Kao, I can’t bear to keep watching!!!

The one who plays Dao Ming Si [Jerry Yang's character], kao, he thinks he knows English…saying ‘so what’ all the time. Did he go to school? This line is the most lei, when he tells his sister, ‘You have to let me leave this place, “because” I hate it here. Damn, when I went to kindergarten, I showed off my English like that too.

Ai..Why am I so angry? China has 1.3 billion people, how can we not find better actors!!

Japan’s filmed it, Taiwan’s filmed it, Korea’s filmed it.

We filmed it last, and made it into a joke, it’s embarrassing.

Look how much face you [Hunan TV] lost for China! Using laptops and sneakers to show off how rich the characters are supposed to be…peasant!! Came from antiquity!!! Kao, I’m so angry!!!

观光土豆:

Even the script is shanzhai, standard shanzai!!

观光土豆:

Very , very shanzhai…none of the cars in it are worth more than 400,000 RMB, and they’re all Chinese cars…And they’re supposed to be rich…

观光土豆:

Do not resemble super rich kids at all, don’t even resemble new money. Peasants pretending to be rich. Seriously does not compare to Taiwan.

mickieyy:

All the product placement are too completely obvious.

观光土豆:

Koreans are infamous for supporting their own products. There are many Korean products in their shows. Why is it that when the Chinese do this we’re called peasants?

ywzyqh:

Actually, it’s not too terrible…haha…after all it’s Mainland produced…as a Mainland show…there’s already improvement. If compared to Taiwan, Japan, and Korea…the production budgets are on different levels…so there’s no comparison…I believe Mainland dramas will one day have their own style, and it’s not about who spent more in filming or how luxurious the show appears…this is my opinion…if you don’t like it, pretend these characters are invisible…haha

う帆ズ魜:

I’m speechless…product placement for car, shampoo, shoes…ai…why did they have to make it like this…the hairstyles…speechless. But I still support Chinese products…even the cars.

观光土豆:

Please, its not as as people say on the internet. If it is, then don’t watch it. Support Chinese productions. Show patriotism.

观光土豆:

The Koreans have better not see this! Embarrassing!

观光土豆:

Can’t take this anymore, I’m afraid I’ll die throwing up.

  1. Japanese version is the best!!

  2. First!,

    What a lame reproduction, ghastly

  3. I liked shanzhai comment.

  4. Completely pointless anyways. Taiwan did it in the same language, what’s the deal?

  5. I think the title of the mainland version is best translated as “Meteor Shower”.

  6. At least the Korean title was accurate “Flower men”

  7. I remember when Gay Garden debut couple of fuglies at my school started to imitate the show and call themself “F4″ and went as far as “touching” each other. it was then I realized that gays can actually be made, not only born.

  8. China copies something and yet again screws it up, yawn.

  9. CAN THOSE GUY ACTORS LOOK MORE GAY????

Honestly, it looks like a joke pretending to poke fun at gays…, Korean pop stars look gay enough, not only to the rest of the world but even to real men in korea….now chinese guys trying to copy ????? when will it end,>>>
If i saw someone dressed like that and that person thought it didn;t look homo sexual, but thought it looked “cool” i would bitch slap the hell out of him

  10. The paradox I face with Asian pop music/tv/culture; hate all the androgynous dudes but love all the hyper cute chicks, can I have one without the other?

  11. the great yellow master race

The story centers on a plain and poor teenage girl called Shan Cai, who goes to a university for rich people, forced upon her by her parents. The university is dominated by a gang of handsome but arrogant students called F4, who are the heirs of the most influential families in Taiwan.

In the beginning, Dao Ming Ssu, the gang leader, hates Shan Cai so much that he gives everyone in the university orders to make her life miserable. However, Shan Cai’s persistence gradually gains Ssu’s respect and later he falls in love with her. Like many other TV series, the lovers end up getting together after going through a series of painful challenges.

    • the great yellow master race

a gang of handsome but arrogant students called F4, who are the heirs of the most influential families in Taiwan.–

      thats means:

chinese boys beating everyone else for not being chinese and not being rich and not being in the political circle of KMT.

      hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm….

      • as much as i love taiwan, your observation is not that far from reality…

      • The best part is you can tell looking at those dudes that none of them would even pass for your average college student here, let alone kids of rich families. Any rich family here in TW that had a son that looked like them would keep him locked in the basement and fed on leftover durian.

  12. what i really don’t get is the hair? why is it necessary for dudes to have so much hair? dudes have more hair in asia than the chicks.

its not just gay; its plain unnecessary.

  13. that is fuckin’ boring!

  14. Reason for feminine guys

I read an article on Korean flower men quite a while ago.
It said one of the reasons for the emergence of feminine men was the feminist movement of “older” women in South Korea who wanted young feminine men. So really the existance of feminine men was in response to the desires of women – or so the article claimed.
Forgot what was the cause of this feminist movement though and too tired to find out at the moment.
I suppose this flower-man trend is somewhat spreading through asia(?)

Point being that if you want to get women you have to play ball. :)

  15. The 4 guys supposed to be super rich kids but looking at them, look like they came from some farming village in China… nothing like those from Korea or Japan… just look at the 2nd photo… :(

  16. I think it looks good, it looks chinese so more realistic I suppose. Horses for courses eh? I bet the kids love it.

  17. Going further with what I said above, my guess is that the PRC doesn’t do “rich” well because it was founded on the principle of overthrowing the rich upper class and replacing them with farmers and workers. Sixty years later, there’s a new rich upper class, but having just recently gotten off the poor track, their aristocratic demeanor has yet to develop.

By contrast, the KMT in Taiwan was basically made up of the old urban gentry.

  18. hm. i never saw the tw version, but the korean version was also dubbed and played on tw tv as well.

  19. I can’t tell the men from the girls and I think some of them are prettier than my wife! I need help!!!

  20. The hairstyles on the guys are a bit “puffy”, and the clothes look faux-trendy, but other than that they look like your typical-wannabe-TV-soap-serial-actors to me. And the girl is cute.

  21. So when we going to get the western version?

  22. The western version is called “Gossip Girl” and is like Sex and the City light for teenagers.

  23. I hate all of these shows and love them also.

I hate them for making men girly and possibly homo-erotic.

I love these kinds of shows, because… Well, less competition folks.

Girls don’t like men that spend more time in the bathroom putting on make up than they do…

I actually, want to see a sitcom about a girl who dates one of these feminine dudes and actually gets tired of him. Now, that IS TELEVISION! Good television!

    • I would take one of these ‘feminine’ guys over the vast majority of local Chinese guys who don’t have basic hygiene habits and manners.

In the meanwhile, you can see girls who look like the female lead anywhere.

  24. ^actually the guys in the three versions weren’t girly/homoerotic, if you actually watch it- the guy are anti-feminist/ violent/ womenizers (not to mention the DMS character pretty much sexually harrassed/almost raped the female lead character)

Funny how the mainland people are bashing it so much based on all the superficial things- complaining about, looks, money, what looks richer etc. Most of the international fans watching it at the moment are praising it for it’s script/ character chemistry and acting which apparently pwns the stiff Korean version. Doesn’t really matter though- they’re currently no.1 ratings wise. The number of people tuning into it = the entire population of SKorea.

(For some reason, the first 2 Meteor Shower photos have purposely photoshopped to look tackey :( )

  25. Thank god 陆涛 isn’t in there, as well as the same crew that appears in every single “youth” drama in China staring with 奋斗 and 我的青春谁做主. But since I don’t like TW version to begin with, I with defiantly not watching this, despite a changes of faces on TV.

  26. Teenage soap operas aren’t cool without a geek character.

  27. i like this show
    my wife wtches this often

when i have trouble taking a shit
this show helps me losen up
the terrible singing and 4 or 5 boys dressed like girls
Shit shit shit ah yes all better

  28. Chinese and Taiwanese men are ugly. Korean men look the best. Japanese are ok.

  29. This is the gayest genre of ‘drama’ evvverrrrrrr.

  30. OMG…it’s tragic

  31. How come everyone comeplains about the gay arse men but no one complains about the sissy useless retarded females?- especially in the Korean version. (Guess mostly men commenters)

    • “(Guess mostly men commenters)”

You don’t need to guess that most of the visitors here are horny and desperate males. Just look at the Most Viewed section on ChinaSmack and see what most people here like to read about.

  32. Another version of an already saturated genre in the market place. wouldn’t it be cheaper to just import the Korean or Japanese Taiwanese version and dub it?

  33. It is not that bad considering that it was made and produced entirely from China, I am actually old enough to remember when the Taiwan version came out at the beginning there was not that much positive-ness at the very beginning.
At the moment, the biggest problem is the boys, and we are not talking about acting. For everyone who is complaining that they cannot act, don’t watch such TV shows, this is not supposed to be about acting, it is a simple story for a very young teen audience who does not care about acting. The story has been changed, and depending on how the rest of the script goes there is still potential for this to turn around.
Remembering that this show is really meant for younger girls, that today means after 90, where the previous Taiwan version was watched by after 80, at the time even if that was good today that show would be considered outdated just the same so this show should have pushed further away from after 80 ideals and tried to link with the new audience, it is too early in the game to determine if it has done that.
The guys at the moment are too young, and if you understand China you can understand that it will be much more difficult for these young actors to portray rich power young men when they come from ordinary families and probably grew up in normal neighborhoods, this is good, a good down to earth attitude will get you far, but will add pressure when you are trying to mimic the Taiwanese F4, back like 10 years ago the GDP gap was even greater so of course Taiwan youth till today have an advantage in that they would know more about real rich families and how their children are supposed to act.
Still I think Hunan TV did a great job producing this, no other TV channel in China can do this till now, and this program pushed China’s soap opera production onto the Asian stage, and now China can show that is has the capacity, production capability and investment capital to do something like this, adding pressure to all other Asian producers. Lets wait till the official television and advertising results before we criticize too hard, I believe there is still room for this to grow

  34. OMG people, especially guys, actually have the time to watch these types of lame-o shows?

Teen Asian dramas are so lame. Can’t the Koreans ever find a plot other than the usual story featuring young, rich kids fucking each other while pretending to be adults, then throw in some tragic ending just for the LULZ? And why are the Chinese copying this lame trend?!

    • Because China doesn’t have much but dull history drama and literature. Everything else newly creative is from Hong Kong.

Just ask yourself why the China doesn’t have any futuristic movies. Space? What cities would look like? Seems like all the movies are about the past.

But then again why create when you can just copy to make big lazy fat ass profits!

If there are good movies/TV dramas from China (excluding Hong Kong’s stuff) I’d like to know.

    • whatever dull, lame, crappy plot that comes out of s.korea china can’t even mimic. yes sad indeed.

  35. Someone feed them a sandwich…

  37. The mainland version wasn’t THAT bad.
FYI, if you said this version was bad, you’ve never watched it.

  38. They definitely look cheap and no sense really lack of creativity and poor acting. Surely the Japanese version is the best.

  39. f4 fanatic for today....

    mainland’s storyline isn’t bad at all…
it’s actually unique and interesting the only seemingly strange about it is its, should i say, filming? there’s really something wrong about the quality of the camera or the setting then add the fact about the selection of actors (and the copyright issue). They are trying to be different but they have overdone it, i guess…

  40. you would think that a country with half of the 1.6 billion male population people you can find better looking F4 than these guys. they should send them to Korea to get plastic surgery before shooting the drama…seriously they look goofy…they gonna fall due to the heavy hair. good lord~!!
