IKEA Bans Customers from Sleeping on Showroom Beds & Sofas

IKEA Bans Showroom Sleeping

After years of having Chinese visitors casually sleeping on their showroom beds and sofas, often taking their shoes off and crawling under the blankets, IKEA China has finally instituted a new rule forbidding customers from doing so. Unfortunately, the infamous and widely reported phenomenon has yet to see much change at least in Beijing where both IKEA employees and other shoppers feel both helpless and awkward when faced with the overwhelming number of culprits that are usually children and the elderly. Chinese netizens reactions are overwhelmingly critical.

Is it just me or has Chinasmack been ‘harmonized?

    • Germandude

Chinasmack has managed to change from informative to absurd to ridiculous within 6 months.
      Quite sad…

            Damn french, always one-upping us

      • Something is going on recently…since they asked for donations?
I’m not sure how much money they are making from doing this, but eventually everyone runs out of gas and then you need to rely on some help.

          Big things are afoot.

I don’t think it’s so much censorship as ‘cheaping out’ – it cost less (write and translate less) and could potentially earn more (clickbait) to do what Shanghaiist does then what Chinasmack used to do. What CS used to do really does require labour of love + donation money – that they weren’t getting enough of apparently. SH does a lot of advert , English teacher wanted + airfare ads embedded as blog posts + foodie reviewsthat may or may not have been paid for…

PS when you google Chinasmack, google automatically suggest Shanghaiist for some (ad $) reason…

Do they show up ready for bed?
    Why are they so tired?
    I don’t understand.

IKEA was one of my absolutely brilliant adventures in Shanghai. I was fortunate enough to have sleeping arrangements nearby one. I used to go there mostly for their food, but the stuff I saw… amazing! I saw people sleeping in chairs, people sleeping in beds from time to time… The best was seeing a group of four men who were obviously having a meeting of sorts in a dining room sweet. Snacks and all.

I wish they wouldn’t ban it. I gotta head back there someday.

Charge for admission – admission refund at exit depending on how much you spend vs, stay.

Finally they are going to kick those oldies and noisy kids from the beds and chairs! to be honest, it´s good for Chinese people to learn some manners so they won’t go to other countries to do this kind of embarrassing stuff.

  • crimsonarmor

LOL i saw this kind of behaviour every week in the Shanghai branch near my home. I always went there for a meal as they did some decent western food and the ice cream was 1y and was sweet as the mcdonalds cones. I would always see people sleeping on beds, sofas and even parents had put young kids to sleep while they sat in display rooms of ikea chatting as though they were in their own house. Nothing new here.

Eh, do they have ice cream cones in Chinese IKEA, at the same place where they sell hot dogs? In Canada, it’s soft serve frozen yogurt cones.
