Wenzhou Train Crash: Husband Loses Wife, Demands Explanation

Husband Yang Feng demands an explanation from the government for the death of his wife, unborn child, and family in the Wenzhou high-speed train collision accident.

From NetEase:

Man mobilizes over 200 friends and relatives to search for pregnant wife, calling into question [official] rescue efforts

In the high-speed train derailment accident, Yang Feng’s mother-in-law, sister-in-law, niece, wife, and his unborn child all died. On the 25th, Yang Feng donned mourning attire, and mobilized over 200 friends and relatives to search for his family as well as questioned the rescue efforts of the relevant departments.

Morning, Yang Feng and cousin began their search with the train cars on the ground, be found nothing. Then he climbed a ladder up onto the bridge and to get past many obstacles, he smashed through many glass windows, shouting “Chen Bi, Chen Bi!” His wife should be wearing a watch around her wrist, and a diamond wedding ring on her finger, both were things he was looking for. However, all the way up till 11am the next day, Yang Feng still not found anything.

Yang Feng used the phone to mobilize over 200 relatives and friends to help him search the various major hospitals in Wenzhou. Though he has not yet found his wife, his three relatives have already been confirmed to have died in the disaster. The fortunate thing is that his father-in-law had complained that the train was too slow and had gotten up to walk about before the accident happened, and escaped the disaster by virtue of being in the aisle.

It turned out that the #16 traincar that Yang Feng’s wife Chen Bi had been a passenger on was severely hit, she was disfigured, and as a result was unable to be identified.

Afternoon of the 25th, bad news confirmed. In the accident, Yang Feng’s mother-in-law, sister-in-law, niece, wife, and his unborn child all dead.

Afternoon of the 25th, Yang Feng appeared at the Wenzhou City 23 Middle Arrangements Site, wearing mourning attire. He says when he arrived at the accident site at 2am in the early morning of the 24th, “rescue efforts had been stopped, they said there were no signs of life”. However, the remains of his wife and mother-in-law were not found until the afternoon of the 24th, “My wife (at the time) was there below, why didn’t they rescue her?” Because his wife was unfortunately disfigured, Yang Feng tearfully asked: “Is this from the impact, or from the excavators?”

Yang Feng also said that just after the rescuers at the scene announced that there were no signs of life within the train cars, a little girl was found alive. If the rescue efforts had continued at the time, could his wife or other passengers still be alive today? A relative of Yang Feng said that they can do without the compensation but they request that the truth be restored and that they be given an explanation.

Yang Feng, I support you! At the very least the passengers’ remains should have been carried out before determining if they were dead. Stopping the rescue and waiting for these poor people to die on their own makes the job of compensation much easier, doesn’t it?

Reportedly, the compensation is peanuts! One family is compensated $77,500 (£47,000). My travel insurance pays out more than this.

    • JAYJAY

This figure is according to the BBC

      • 山炮 ShanPao

therefore its unlikely to be true…

        • JAYJAY

I agree. I think it is probably a lot less than $77,500

I am translating some other things first but compensation amount has been announced. Do not expect it to be similar to developed countries. The cost of living is very different so it is normal that the amount is different in China for Chinese people. The amount may be higher for foreigners.

You can see some of our previous posts such as “Higher Death Compensation For Foreigners” & “Value Of Life Compared With Taiwan, Korea, United States.

          • ShanghaiSteve

Sorry Fauna. But the cost of living in Shanghai is comparable to many Western cities. Rent and food costs are quite similar, it’s simply the value of human life in China that is lower.

          • Andeli

The problem here is that this is between Hangzhou and Wenzhou and it is a expensive high speed train.

I think the MoR will put a lot more up than what is normal in these cases, just but because they want this to go away as fast as possible. I can only imagine what would happen if they offered a Wenzhou or a Hangzhou family something like 180.000 to 220.000 yuan. It would be like spitting them in the face again.

          • http://www.chinasmack.com Fauna

ShanghaiSteve, many Chinese agree with you that the value of human life in China is lower but I think you may be living very differently from average Chinese person. Prices have increased but I am certain the cost of living and income for most Chinese even in Shanghai is much lower than most Western cities. There are may things in Shanghai that is comparable to Western cities, but they are not applicable to average Chinese and the compensation amounts are usually related to average Chinese cost of living and income.

          • Irvin

I think it’s more important to know the truth than monetary compensation. Imagine one day someone come and told you your wife/husband just die. You would want to know what happened too.

Transparency has always been a problem that plagues china, which is the true problem infer by this article I think. Though I don’t agree with most of the policy taken by the government, I can however understand them.

There are just too many people in china, life is too competitive, therefore people just do whatever they can to get ahead of life including corruptions within the government and life in it self is cheaper as well.

Unless we can somehow increase the demand for life, I’m not seeing the situation in china to change anytime soon with the surplus in supply.

Like I’ve said in previous articles, moral and ethics is a luxury that can only be afford by the fortunate.

          • Dawei

Fauna, half a million RMB is not a lot of cash if you look at lifetime earnings lost. If we assume that the average age of a person killed was 30 years old and that they would have worked till 60. Then RMB 500,000 at an annuity at 7 percent would pay on average RMB40,000 a year or RMB 3,333 a month for 30 years. This is below the median wage of the average Shanghainees and does not take account of inflation and at the end of the period all the cash would be gone. Faced with this compensation is below average. IF you take into account the fact that those on the train came from above average economic backgrounds the compensation will in no way make up for the economic loss. This calc does not take account of the suffering and other knock on impacts such as the loss of a spouse or parent to a young child would have.

          • http://www.chinasmack.com Fauna

Dawei, I did not say half a million RMB is a lot of money. I do not understand what you are arguing with me about.

          • Just John

            Fauna,

He is arguing with you because he feels that placing a value on human life is not acceptable, or that said value is to low.

He does not seem to realize that you are not placing said value, and does not seem to realize that you are not the one who claimed said value is a “fair” value, you are just the one who he is taking his misdirected anger out on.

He does not seem to realize, if he disagrees with placing a said value on a human or that said value is too low, that he should be arguing said value with the source. You are an easy target, the ones placing the value are not.

Ignore him, he apparently seems unable to realize who he should be directing his responses to. Or else he does not realize the per annualized calculation of income for the majority of Chinese is not as high as it is in other countries, no matter what living costs are.

          • DUXESTLUX

Chinese government is the richest in the world. I think is about time they give to their people some of the money stolen abroad through unfair competition, IP infringements, etc. Otherwise what is the point for us to become poorer for the benefit of a political party only.

          • JAYJAY

Wow, my comment did open a can of worms. I think money paid out to families act not only as compensations but also as a deterrent to stop companies/governments departments being irresponsible in the future. Therefore, I believe a higher amount compensation will actually mean something, and other companies/departments will look at the actual costs of compensations and maybe learn to do things right next time. A higher amount might be considered as punitive in nature, but it is also a tell-tell sign for the companies/departments to learn from this and avoid such accidents in the future. More to the point, because this kind of tragic accidents usually is a corporate responsibility or corporate manslaughters if you like, one can not pin the blame on just one or a few individuals/officials. This might be a series of decisions made over a course of a certain period that caused this. So a higher compensation is more appropriate than putting some in prison/on death row. But I think the current level of compensation recommended by the government is a slap on the wrist for those who a responsible.

          • Dawei

Fauna, indeed you did not. I did not say you did. The point I was making is that the compensation for Chinese is inadequate for living in China particularly in the Yangtze River Delta area. I suppose I should have prefixed what I said with “and another point is” or “related to Chinese national compensation”.

Just John I presume you are referring to me. JayJay started this thread by mentioning the compensation to Chinese victims, and Fauna did say she was busy translating through other things first. So I added my take on the Chinese compensation. If I were arguing with Fauna I would say I disagree with your point for the following reasons….

To spell things out for you compensation fulfills two purposes to compensate for the loss of lifetime income a person would earn if they did not die, the purpose of which is to keep a family on a firm financial standing, the second purpose of compensation is money to make up for the emotional and life friendship loss. The second is the hardest thing to quantify in monetary terms if it is indeed possible to ever make up with cash the loss of a loved one. I was quite clear what compensation I was calculating and what I was not.

            have a good day

I wonder how much is victim compensation. In the US, you would get a least a million or three.

    • Sunshine

If I remember correctly from the Chinese news yesterday… the most a person can be compensated for is ¥400,000.

He doesn’t realize that there is never an explanation for these things? Collapsed schools, poisonous milk powder, collapsing bridges, and now a train wreck. I admire his courage, but recommend that he check out Zhao Lianhai’s current situation. This entire system ensures that there will never be an explanation for anything that happens to “the people.”
Next we’ll all be told how heroic the Party was for cleaning up the wreck quickly or sth like that….

    • ShanghaiSteve

You are unfortunately correct. However, over the past few years I’ve noticed that local Chinese ask more and more questions about these issues. What hasn’t changed is the government’s response. I suspect that the increase in university education has emboldened a large number of the populace to question authority. Something similar occurred in the United States during the Vietnam War.

      • rollin wit 9′s

be careful; They will start demolishing universities next. ‘Can let the younggins get too bright now can we’ They might ask questions we can’t apply the basic response to.

        • bunny99

I think the questioning comes not from the universities but from the internet, from mainland Chinese people sharing and spreading ideas and from overseas news and other reports. Also, from people becoming more prosperous and expecting better living standards.

The universities in China are quite harmonious.

Under the totalitarian regime we are something but subhumanbeings. there are only two classes in mainland China, slaves and slave owners.

The monetary system IS a slave system but it’s also necessary for us to work as a group. In the old slave system if you’re not do as you told you’ll be punish, whipped, starve etc.

Things haven’t changed much with the monetary system, if you don’t do as you’re told you’ll be without a job, thus no money. With out money you’ll starve, look down upon (emotional torture), and force to sleep on the streets.

However unless we’re willing to go back to the forest and climb trees or be self sufficient as a farmer, we’ll have to accept the current system.

      • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

“Slaves” may be a exaggerated term, but “indentured servant” isn’t.

When one demographic can afford to take cabs everywhere, and another demographic has to work as literal servants to another demographic, (like say, a whole country works as a nanny/ayi for another country), well, it sounds like it works out for one and not the other.

Change happens. Sometimes subtle, sometimes not.

      • Dawei

No. Difference between slave an non slave is choice however small the benefit of that choice may be. You can find a new job, tough thing to do when a slave. Granted if you have skills that are in demand and are rare then you command more power in the relationship, if you have no skills, there is low labour demand and plenty of supply you are in a much weaker position and could be more credibly “compared” to a slave (if the boss wishes to extract every gram of work out of you).

Agree that we have to accept the current system.

It baffles me how people can see tragedies like this and still believe in gods and deities.

      • Hawkeye4077

This has nothing to do with God. We are made to make choices. God will not intervene in our choices. Each person is responsible for their own action. God is not to be a babysitter. Everyone leaves this earth eventually. The Lord Jesus Christ gave his life up as a ransom for many and forgave those that mocked him, tortured and crucified him.
This train accident happened because of irresponsible behavior. Having loss, sadness, reminds us how great love is & what it is. If everything was perfect you would learn nothing. You would be like a robot.

        • kate

what a failed rebuttal. why the hell did carelessness of a few result in death of innocent woman, her unborn child, and her mother among so many others if your deity is just. why did they have to sacrifice to remind us of what love is? i wish dexter is the omnipresent omnipotent instead.

        • Irvin

If this has nothing to do with gods then gods serve no purpose.

Jesus Christ assuming he’s even real is dead and his death serve no purpose. He didn’t save anyone or die for anyone or anything. According to popular believes, he’s delusional and think there’s a god and his death will mean something but it didn’t. He’s just fucking dead and the world didn’t become better because of his death.

Hitler’s death serve a purpose: it ended war, the world did became better.

Various artist’s deaths serve a purpose: it made their piece more expensive.

          Jesus? nope, nothing.

If people would just accept that this is the only life we have and ends with our deaths this world would be a much better place. There’re no second chances, if you’re dead you’re just that: fucking dead.

          • Capt. WED

Christianity is intertwined with western civilization. Sure this says nothing about the purpose of Jesus Christ the entity but without Christianity the world would have been very different place from today.

I think one positive point in this whole fiasco is the fact that, even though there are directives form the propaganda-ministry to play down the whole shit, lots of papers, agencies and the people arent giving a crap about it and are still openly up arms about it, accepting nothing less than the execution of the corrupt people involved and a full disclosure, disregarding even the offer from the rail-road ministry to pay each individual involved in the accident half a million yuan for compensation.
I hope this accident will be a warning shot against the CCP to finally accept that corruption that causes this scale of disaster is simply not accepted by the population and cant simply be whitewashed by lame excuses and token investigations/punishments. The rail-road ministry has chosen the wrong enemy this time – no longer the victims are just mere peasants and migrant workers noone gave a shit about, but this time they are real higher middle-class and even rich people, who are among the key-supporters of the political stability the CCP is so concerned about.

It is time that the CCP finally acknowledges that a corruption free goverment is imperative for their continued rule, and not just a mere gimmick to placate people with. If they want to rule the nation undisturbed, they should fucking purge their own ranks Stalin-style.

Oh, before I forget: All americans should still be lined up and shot – along with the fucking corrupt officials – and thrown into a pit full of shit and piss.

    • john digmeme

LOL, thank you for the last line. I thought your username had been hacked.

I didn’t do anything to you Hongjian. I don’t understand why you want me dead.

Re: the last line: Obvious troll is obvious/internet forums are serious biz/etc..

      • Hongjian

Americunts and corrupt officials are both equally the scum of the earth.
If christfags want me to believe in their shitty god, I accept nothing less as proof than that one day, miraculously all americants are lined up and shot and thrown into a pit where all corrupt chinese officials and their entire families are waiting to be burried alive under 300 million stinking amerifat bodies, so that the intense weight and pressure turns them into crude oil for future generations to use.

Kinda like Raptor-Jesus, who died for our sins millions of years ago so that we can use his remains to drive our cars etc.

Yeah, I hear retro is in now in China. It appears the 60′s are back in vogue.

Oh yeah, and speaking of trends, Star Wars is really popular now. Really popular. A typical Chinese greeting you here on the street is: “May the Forth be with you, always.”

      • Hongjian

        Damn right.

Never it was more apparent that the ideals of the May Fourth Movement 1919 were more betrayed than now.
What China seriously needs now, is a new violent Cultural Revolution that forces one part of this piece-of-shit society and culture into an Orwellian terror-state where the entire class of officials are under intense surveillance through Televisors (made by Lenovo and powered by Sisco Systems) 24/7, and are killed on sight by automated machineguns wired to the CCTV’s (pun intented) when they are seen taking just one RMB in bribes or just slacking off by drinking tea and smoking cigs outsides of the designated times.
On the same time, their children should be seperated from those of the prole-laobaixin and put into special schools where they are subject of brainwashing that makes them into little spies who will denounce their parents to the thought-police when they are found wanting in doing their job. In the end, this system should aim to destroy what little humanity left in the officialdom and turn them right into mindless automatons who are left only with that much mind to function as servants of the party and state, which will prevent official corruption from happening once and for all.

In return, these officials should enjoy special privileges and free but strictly limited supply of goods and luxuries, so that there are always enough poorer laobaixing willing to become wealthy automatons in exchange for their free minds. Also all who became officials should be forced to have children, who are then brainwashed right from childhood to become automatons with the goal to replace their parents when they are either dead or vanished. With a working, independent loop established, it is no longer neccessary to recruit laobaixing into becoming officials again.
Laobaixing in return should be comparably free – like animals – and live as they always did to contribute to the overall economy of the nation. Only the class of the officials should be subjected to the constant terror-system, since they wont need to be free thinkers anyway in oder to function in their goddamn jobs of delegating work, orders and money down from the party to get shit done.

With this system, the ideals of the may fourth movement may finally come true – no A-Q anymore, no bloodied mantou and an entirely reformed culture that is no longer subject of a millenia old kleptocracy made of shit and guanxi formed as a corrupted mandarinate that shits up both the nation and the society.

The emperor/party chairman can then rely on a highly efficient officialdom made of brainwashed automatons to rule and lead his realm, and the people would never again be subject of disasters arising from the embezzlement of funds.

        A win-win situation.

Hongjian I are you a Kiwi? Every Kiwi I met in China was a complete whackjob. Anything you don’t hate?

    Compensation, compensation, compensation…………….
No amount of money can replace a life!
The important thing is to ensure that an accident like this does not occur again. I implore the Chinese government to reveal the true cause of this accident, and take appropriate action. By saying “appropriate action”, I don’t mean pointing blame at persons that may be responsible, but putting procedures in place that will prevent this happening again.
My condolences go out to all family and friends of those killed and injured in this horrific accident.

    “吾在川上曰 [网易广东省网友]:

Be careful of those wearing helmets behind you! Be even more careful of the many near you who aren’t wearing helmets…”

The first comment, the very first, is extremely poignant. After yesterdays article here on CS about the government text msg, and now this guys comment, I really can’t believe there are people in the west excited about China’s rise to #1 superpower.

    • rollin wit 9′s

those sick, naive, misinformed individuals don’t know like you and I know johnny that the grass is red on the other side (this side) and that it’s tainted, poisonous, contains small amounts of “grassticizer” to make it look like real grass and been pissed & shitted on. Even the locals don’t go near it anymore.

BUT WAIT! When those naive little suckers get airborne and are on their way over here, little will they know that their #1 super powder will have already put a $billion in to make it look like real grass so they remain unaware that
      ‘FCK!. Something ain’t right here!’

      • john digmeme

        Wat? Tingbudong

  • Jess

500,000 yuan is alot in China considering most people get paid about 5000 yuan a month (so its like 8 years salary).

    • Danny

You can’t even buy 15 square meters (a small room) in Shanghai.

      • anon

Well, most Chinese people don’t live in Shanghai. The problem here is that the laws stipulate certain compensation maximums that are based on some actuarial calculations that don’t make much sense to the victims of this incident since they’re likely to be of a higher economic class if they can be riding bullet trains. 500,000 is a lot for the vast majority of Chinese, but not much for the middle-class and upper-class Chinese, especially those living in the major cities. I don’t think revising compensation law is yet on the agenda though. People are still angry that they’re rushing to discuss compensation at all.

  • vonskippy

Unfortunately, you get what you pay for. China is famous for stealing other countries IP, and then doing a half ass job of building them since they don’t really understand how they work, using inferior material (since those industries too are based on pilfered technology and science), then hiring even dumber people to maintain and manage them. No wonder it all falls apart. Oh well, China has a huge surplus of people, and money, so what difference does a bit less of each matter.

    • Just John

Where is your proof that they stole this technology (In fact, from the sounds of it, this was sold to them, and the current issue is NOT using it in their own country, but using the technology and selling the finished goods to other countries), used inferior materials, and hired dumber people to maintain and manage it?

Aren’t you the one who called for proof of medical students in western countries using pigs? So, I guess we only have to “prove” something for a different country, and China we can just assume?

Comon, pictures or it didn’t happen.

    • Hongjian

As of now, there’s indication that this disaster was 100% human fault and not related with faulty technology. Even if, the train-driver could just take a fucking cell-phone and call the central to stop all trains before they ramm it up his ass.

And the traindriver is nowhere to be found, eg. probably silenced by corrupt officials who doesnt want the real cause to be known.

      • kevinnolongerinpudong

Umm… something tells me that the driver of the second train might be dead!
Of course, the driver is not included in the list of the dead released recently, but that’s no problem because I bet a decent 80% of the people who died aren’t listed, so no suprise.

        • john digmeme

I think Hongjian is talking about the driver of the train that was stopped on the track and that he did not call his control office to divert trains following close behind. He just let the following train ‘ramm it up his ass’

If they released that info, it would be worse than Casey Anthony, and he would surely be targeted on the internet and punished on the street.

        • anon

The driver of the train behind was quickly reported to have been impaled on the brake lever. No one expected him or the train to be able to react fast enough to stop in time at those speeds (presuming he was immediately notified of the stopped train ahead at all by any warning or control systems). Like what john digimeme said, Hongjian is referring to the driver of the first train that stopped. A lot of Chinese netizens are asking about him and there hasn’t been much information, which only makes people suspicious and conspiracy theories start flying.

    • Meh

Ouch. Yeah I agree about the quality of stuff made in China for the most part. My heart goes out to those people who have lost loved ones in this.

  • Canadian_Skies

I used to take the “D” train. Was that train the D train?

  • Me

my deapest condolence to all the victims and their families.
There must be some thing wrong in the whole event. There are people trying to cover something – like everything else in China

  • patriot (aka We Never Left!)

This just proves that China and Chinese people are pure evil. That guy should protest and bomb the CCP headquarters. America should find these people and give them weapons. Chinese people are like yellow apes.

    • Telefon Domina

I like your style of writing, it’s very thoughtful.

  • david

shame on the railway system. not only about this man’s disaster but for all.
i thought china’s railway system was pretty good. i had a feeling that a train that goes 300+kph sounded too good to be true.

and i WAS about to take a train. but i flew to fuzhou instead.

i think this system should be removed.

  • civilization

there is no pain worst than this in life,,, very impressive, i hope through this issue that the conscience of railroad ministry can be aroused

  • The Dragon

Where has the coverage of this story gone?

    • kevinnolongerinpudong

Glad to see that I’m not the only person who noticed the sudden onset of silence in the last few days about this accident.
Sorry, Yang Feng, you’re probably not going to get your explanation. In fact, you’ll be quite lucky if you aren’t tossed in jail like Zhao Lianhai was.
Wenzhou is getting “Wenchuan-ed.” Anyone else remember all of the promises of a full investigation of the collapsed schools in Sichuan? The promises of acccountability? They never arrived- and trying to realize those promises will land you in jail (see Tan Zuoren). The cycle begins again.

      • The Dragon

I have seen from another site that the Ministry that controls the media has ordered a halt to all stories.

I have also read that they “promise” the results of the investigation by September. As far as I know the only ones who have defied the order are maybe some bloggers and this site:
