Shanghai Subway Riders Caught Not Paying Fare

He and his girlfriend both only bought one ticket for the both of them.

From KDS:

113 people caught not paying fare within 2 hours – By Shanghai News

Shanghai news report on "gate jumpers" or people who do not buy tickets or pay for fare when using public transit like metros, subways, or busses.

Subway authority says to gate-jumpers "No", begins special campaign.

A man is caught on camera sneaking through a gate with someone else to avoid paying fare.

Another Chinese man accuses him of "gate jumping."

"Who said? I saw it."

The caught "gate jumper" denies it, claims he bought a ticket.

"I bought the ticket, what are you fussing about?"

He and his girlfriend both only bought one ticket for the both of them.

"Two persons only purchased one ticket."

His girlfriend talks with the subway station attendant.

A Shanghai television news report of people who use the subway without paying.

Comments from KDS:

If they checked at every metro station and every exit, I bet there will at least be over ten thousand a day.

All “hard disk people.” MD, they even get angry when you catch them, ** I do not understand it. downloading

This kind of “wai di ren” should not be allowed to come to Shanghai. Fuck. downloading

Very skilled at “gate-jumping,” looks like he has had a lot of practice.

No sense of shame, typical “hard disk people” characteristic.

Everyone remember these shit faces, see/meet once, beat once.

What is so strange about this? I feel it is very normal, this is their habit, just like us disliking them. [The commenter referred to the "wai di ren" as "它们" which is like referring to them as things, not people.]

LZ’s speed is so fast…I also just saw it [the news report]. downloading
Those “hard disk” was even pretty arrogant…not paying for fare and still such a confident/self-righteous attitude.

There will be people saying Shanghainese are discriminating against “hard disk people.” downloadingdownloading

Should be shot on the spot.
Not paying fare = deserting the army downloading

City management should be assigned to the metro to catch “hard disks”~!

In Paris, there are special staff who randomly check for tickets within various subway trains or metro stations. Sometimes, they have the police’s help, and the fine is 30 euros for getting caught (an individual metro ticket is 1.4 euros). No money, your ID number is written down and you are given a ticket/citation. No ID, the police will search you, and those who indeed do not have identification and are illegal immigrants are taken back to the police station to await deportation.

It should be 100 RMB fine for being caught once.
If they had to go through a hole on the side but not buy a ticket/fare, I bet “hard disks” would still do it.

How come all those “hard disk” members [of KDS] do not come in [to this topic post]?~ downloadingdownloadingdownloadingdownloading

“Wai di ren,” go back to where you came from…

I am a handicapped person and I always honestly buy fare when I use public transit.

Your disability is your leg, “hard disks’” disability are their brains.

When I saw that [the news report], I expected KDS definitely would post about it.
That SB definitely is asking for it.

I demand instituting whipping/caning [like Singapore]. downloading

The most disgusting thing is that the gate-jumping “hard disks” are proud of it [successfully "gate jumping"], with their look of arrogance. downloading

I hope they can do this everyday, maintain it, and do a good job managing [this problem].

This “hard disk person’s” dignity is only worth 4 RMB. I strongly request that the mosaic/mask be removed.

A photoshop on KDS discussion forum joking about "formatting" a "hard disk person" or correcting a "wai di ren" (person not from the area, outsider).

Bald man: "You dare not admit it?? Immediately FORMAT IT!"

They need to channel this 外地人 vs 上海人 hatred into something useful. Like a steel cage match or something. Or maybe a reality TV show where a bunch of 外地 and 上海 MMs have to live together, with the resulting catfights. I would watch that.

Finally, if you hooked up with a 外地 girl and offered to “format that #$%” what are the chances she would have any clue what you were talking about? If she did (and accepted the offer) she would be one special lady.

    @ Yan Xishan:

LoL, yeah, but the only problem is that despite all the tough talk coming from the Shanghainese, they’re really too soft. Most WDR would kick their ass in a heartbeat. Also, Shanghainese, especially the men, are more known for arguing, not for fighting. Can you imagine what would happen if the “Dong Bei” Chinese got involved? It would be so one-sided.

The MM idea is fantastic, but still one-sided.

LoL, and yeah, the “format it” is an awesome inside joke. Kinda nerdy too.

Anyway, I’m all for these people getting caught. At the very least, if you’re going to take the risk, at least have the dignity to own up to it when you get caught and do what you need to do rather than try to squirm out of it like a loser. If you can’t pay, don’t play.

I think that the hard disk reference is to a make of Hard Drive that has the same intials as WDR (or something like that). So the geeky Shanghainese like to say that, rather than wei di ren. Pretty lame.

And as if all the people jumping the gate are non-Shanghainese. Man, they have a superiority complex.

I think the news report simply featured a Chinese guy that was obviously not local Shanghainese (by accent or whatever). That just made it easier for the Shanghainese to think those skipping fare are “wai di ren.”

The hard drive talk is something of an inside joke. The Chinese term for “outsider” or “non-local” is “wai di ren.” Abbreviated, it is “WDR.” A famous hard drive manufacturer is Western Digital. So, the Shanghainese, on KDS apparently, connected Western Digital to “Ren” (Chinese for “people”). It began with “Western Digital Ren” becoming a nickname for “wai di ren.” Then it went one step further removed and became “hard disk person” or, apparently, just “hard disk” now.

So, “hard disk” should make someone think of Western Digital, which should then make them think of the abbreviation WD, which would then become “wai di” or “wai di ren.”

Very nerdy humor. The jist of it was explained in the Glossary here on chinaSMACK.

I think the comments show the little emperor syndrome coming through. In this case it’s the Wai di Ren’s faults for all Shanghai’s problems. It wouldn’t be fun looking in a mirror.

It’s easier to point fingers. Nazis did this with the Jews. In Europe it’s the foreigners (Algerian, Turks, et al.). In the United States it’s the Canadians. But yeah, it is true that Canada pretty well screwed up America. America has to wear Canada like a green hat. So it’s fair to blame Canadians.

In the United States it’s the Canadians.

Our equivalent to WDR is illegal Mexican immigrants, who many people blame for any and all problems regardless of their actual involvement.

Why is it that every person who does something wrong is automatically a WDR? Can you tell just by looking at someone where they come from, is that why one can say unequivocally that Shanghainese never do this?

China is a shame society – most western countries are guilt societies.

SHAME comes from outside oneself – others recognizing that you did something wrong.

GUILT comes from inside oneself – knowing that what you did was wrong.

If he sucessfully claims he did no wrong, that it was all a misunderstanding, – there is no shame (or loss of face).

    WE know he did wrong.

    HE knows he did wrong.

BUT if he sucessfully claims he did no wrong, then he is not shamed.

OF COURSE he claims he did nothing wrong – why would he want to shame himself?

OF COURSE the Shanghaiers want to claim it’s all other people’s fault – why would they want to shame themselves?

The only thing I found surprising is that the camera people were so foolish as to think they could get him to admit he did wrong on camera.
