103-Year-Old Beggar Discovered in Zhengzhou, Story Goes Viral

Recently, a journalist in Zhengzhou was chatting with a beggar when he looked at the man’s ID card and noticed that he was an astonishing 103 years old. The reporter posted an article titled The Hundred Year Old Beggar online, and it quickly went viral. The local government claimed that there are several other people in their 80s and 90s in the village, they only receive 60 RMB each month and can live comfortably. A highly up-voted netizen comment said “No problem, now you’re famous, the government will have to help you, in the future you’ll be the stereotypical example for poverty assistance.”

      Normally I would think that of course the photo of the elderly man is in fact the elderly man in the article. But since i’ve been reading cs (and generally living in China) i’ve come to assume that all photos will be fake and all stories will be sorely undertold.
