Old Chinese Man Selflessly Cares For His Mentally Ill Family

The old man

From Tianya:

An old man takes care of three mentally ill family members, a 70-year-old nuclear researcher’s sad late years

Gazing down from my balcony, I can always see this seventy-plus year-old man [pictured above], carrying pots and bowls in a plastic bag, walking alone in the afternoon sun. I heard that this old man is delivering food to his daughter who suffers from schizophrenia. I started to pay attention, and noticed that every day, no matter what season or how terrible the weather, he never failed to come. Not long after, I heard that this white haired man’s surname was Wei, and in Huangdao [in Qingdao], he is considered famous, one reason being that he was one of the early researchers of the atomic bomb, the other reason being that his family is riddled with tragedy. A family of four, his wife suffers from schizophrenia; his two children, one is schizophrenic, the other congenital mental retardation, [the children] both nearly forty years old, without jobs, without families of their own.

His wife and two children are all unhealthy, with many people all saying it is due to nuclear radiation. Nobody’s tried to prove these claims, the old man himself keeps his silence. His days are like a flowing stream or a wispy breeze, quiet and unnoticed.

The retarded son [pictured below], I am quite familiar with. He used to sell cassette tapes along the street corner. But he doesn’t know how to greet customers and his head was always lowered. After a while, all his cassettes were lost. Sometimes, local thugs would pick on him and beat him up. Perhaps it’s because of his condition, but he never seemed to mind and aways smiles when he sees people. The daughter, I heard she has trouble sleeping at night, and has severe obsessive compulsive disorder. Her living space is very dirty and full of dust. But it can’t be cleaned because moving items will agitate her. A few times I saw the old man taking her to the hospital. She was so thin, only around 70 lbs, and was in a daze, the sight was truly pitiful! It’s easy for mental patients to be tired of the world. Two years ago, both the wife and daughter tried to commit suicide. One took sleeping pills, and wasn’t found until 20 hours later. The other slit her wrist, and dyed the floor red with her blood! Thankfully both were saved. But after ground-shaking events like that, there seemed to be no aftershocks. The old man was still quiet, wise, walking down the same road day after day, taking care of his unfortunate family.

The burden of taking care of this family falls entirely on the small old man, it’s truly remarkable. Everyday, I see the old man bringing home groceries. Sometimes, he would take a walk with his wife, hand in hand. He ignores the perspiration on his own forehead, but takes care to wipe it away for his wife. Obviously, he’s very caring towards his family. Honestly, someone his age giving long term care to 3 patients, no one could take it. I have no idea how the old man’s own health is, I just see him persevering through the seasons. The neighbors see this and sigh: when he collapses from exhaustion, how will his family survive!?

A while ago, I went to his home as a student volunteer. His place is very small and narrow. It was unimaginably run down. An old computer and a broken swirl chair were basically everything he owned. Books and medicine dominated the undecorated bedroom that was 50 to 60 square meters. The entire morning, the old man bustled about, giving his wife a massage as he chatted with us. We felt the benevolence and amicability of an old man. He’s very knowledgeable and optimistic, and laughs as though he doesn’t know what worry is!

Afterwards, we found out that the old man’s name was Wei Shijie, had worked on nuclear research for 26 years, and personally participated in research and experiments for our country’s first atomic bomb, hydrogen bomb, and missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons! He is also a known author, having written more than ten books. No wonder there were many awards and trophies on his walls and bookcase. It’s clear that he made many contributions to our country: “Department of Nuclear Industry Honor Medal”, “Outstanding Science and Technology Employee”, “Qingdao Outstanding Communist Party Member”

Frankly, I don’t know how much longer this old man can keep going. But, we grow old, time doesn’t stop, watching the old man getting weaker everyday, I don’t dare to go down that line of thought…

This year’s Senior Day is fast approaching, I think, we can’t let this old man who’s contributed to our great country continue to suffer. Hope our society will take care of this old man, and all seniors that need to be cared for!

I’ve heard about one too. Both parents are nuclear researchers. Two sons both with cerebral palsy. They lock the children at home when they go to work.

  1. Sofa.

Wow big surprise. The CCP fucks over people who contribute the most to them. While those fatasses in the government are at home trying to get their pencil dicks up for their mistresses, this guy is hard at work caring for his family. It wouldn’t cost them anything to send some money his way to pay for the care of his family members, and they’re still too busy dicking around to bother. Happy 60th China.

  2. The party takes care of its people my ass.

I love China, but at times I hate it so much.

Not that any country in this world is perfect. It’s just that China has a much larger fraction of imperfections.

One day… China will rise… and will lift up all of its citizens…. instead of just the richest 10%…

  3. I find it amusing that people think it’s amazing or interesting that a man is taking care of his family.

Age is irrelevant, old guys often think of themselves as the bread winners even though they appear to be old and decrepit, inside they’re still the strong young bucks they once were.

    • You should read all the comments. Nobody is “amazed” that this elderly gentleman is taking care of his family. Comments have all been directed at the communist party neglecting its people.

      • Did you read the article, or any additional comments outside of those translated here?

        From the article translation above:
“The burden of taking care of this family falls entirely on the small old man, it’s truly remarkable. Everyday, I see the old man bringing home groceries. Sometimes, he would take a walk with his wife, hand in hand. He ignores the perspiration on his own forehead, but takes care to wipe it away for his wife. Obviously, he’s very caring towards his family. Honestly, someone his age giving long term care to 3 patients, no one could take it.”

Calling something “remarkable” and following up with what is remarkable as “bringing home groceries” and wiping perspiration from his schizo wife’s forehead kind of implies “amazement”, BP.

        • Rick,

I read it as more as “admiration” than “amazement”, Rick, both in English and Chinese. As such, I don’t share the impression you seem to have that the Chinese people are “amazed” that a man would take care of his family. If they’re amazed by anything, it isn’t the man’s sense of responsibility, but the terribly tragic hardships he’s enduring on a daily basis, with a generally positive attitude. They’re not amazed by his actions. Instead, they admire his fortitude because, frankly, everyone can empathize how discouraging his circumstances are. He’s being held up both as an example of a good, long-suffering husband/father and, as many of the comments show, something of a victim of a less than supportive social welfare system.

        • also, the the old guy was on the nuclear research team, and contribute a lot in his youth; and the responders feel he should have deserved better.

        • I can see where you are coming from Rick. I apologize if I came off as hostile. As a man with a family, I agree that it is my job to take care of them. But my circumstances are heavenly compared to his. Thus I can only sympathize with him and criticize the system that should be taking care of him.

  4. just another fucked up situation among many fucked up situations in China, and in the world

  5. MEIN CHAIRMAN, I CAN WALK!

  6. It’s his karma to suffer after providing the CPC with a nuke.

    • The Chinese nuclear bomb hasn’t killed anyone.

The American has killed and hurt many innocent people.

But the American fathers of the bomb get to live comfortably in their retirement?

  7. This poor old man deserves some compensation. For claiming to be a socialist republic, the CCP sure lacks “social” workers. Then again, we can’t say for sure whether or not the Party has already assisted this man. Perhaps he used to have a gambling problem and pissed all his money away? How are we to know? What should be done is to have some form of case worker to determine whether or not this man and his family qualify for government assistance, such as providing special care to his wife, daughter, and son.

    What do you guys think?

    • Yeah or maybe a heroin addict or human trafficker lol

Your missing the point that China is short changing it’s citizens (especially mentally ill) – I think most would attest to this phenomenon it’s general knowledge.

I read another incidence where another man was put in a cage for 3 years because the state was reluctant to help – Here in the US that’s not even legal.

  8. One of the very first thing I do after reading a forum article is to question its validity.

While I can not say in certainty, but it really does sound like another sensationalist piece.

The author’s narrative style obviously claims to be an outsider, or a speculator, yet he can provide such precise and intimate details to the history of the subject.

  9. What a great man!

  10. many people all saying it is due to nuclear radiation.

Radiation does not cause schizophrenia. When is the Ministry of Education going to start teaching human physiology in school? Oh, that’s right, they have to perpetuate the ‘Traditional Chinese Medicine’ bullshit, so that common people are clueless as to how their bodies work and the causes of basic disease.

    • Sorry buddy, but empirical and basic science research both point toward the fact that radiation exposure can indeed lead to schizophrenia.

      http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16272077

You want me to link you more scientific articles? I’d be happy to.

And since when did it become mandatory for schools to teach human physiology, an incredibly complex subject in it of itself? And furthermore, we’re not even dealing with physiology, we’re dealing with pathology.

So by your standard, everyone in society should have formal medical training (6-10 years) before they can progress onward with their normal lives…

      • Too bad the government didn’t tell Mr. Wei about the dangers. He’s probably been trying to treat his family with eye of newt and spleen of seahorse for the past 30 years.

    • Radiation does not cause schizophrenia. It may trigger it, but not unless the person is genetically predisposed toward the condition. Note that the man’s wife is reportedly schizophrenic. It’s genetic. Radiation does not create schizophrenia out of whole cloth.

This is just a case of bad genes made worse by the Chinese government not giving a toss about its people. Which takes us back to education. It doesn’t take 10 years of medical school to train people to wash their hands with soap to avoid the flu, and it doesn’t take much to teach people that prolonged exposure to ionizing radiation is bad for you.*

*note to local health department: let me just pay you the 250rmb fee and we can skip the full-body fluoroscope on my next ‘health check’ to renew my visa.

      • Radiation surely can cause genetic mutations, which can result in any form of pathology or abnormality. So it absolutely can cause schizophrenia. The disease itself had to have originated from a genetic mutation somewhere in the past. Random genetic mutations occur all the time accounting for the new traits that pop up in the human race. The good ones stay, the bad ones go, and most don’t come into existence because of our innate repair mechanisms. And in this case, since the woman was in a position to reproduce, her genes unfortunately got passed along (not that I am a proponent of restricting reproduction rights). But I digress… I just want to make clear that new traits absolutely do pop up out of “thin air” so to speak. I do not have a degree in neuroscience, but my doctorate is indeed in the field of molecular biology.

I’m truly not arguing with you claiming that the radiation IS the cause of the mental problems in this man’s family. Nobody would be able to produce sufficient causal evidence for this. Is there suspicion in my mind though? Sure.

I agree with you that the government should educate the masses better. Education is power. But it’s not even limited to education. It’s gross negligence all around. Almost nowhere else in this world do you see silicosis of the lung, but it’s rampant in China because there are simply no health standards for the work place (specifically precious stone refining in this case). Or… let me rephrase… there are health standards, but it’s cheaper to pay the fine to break them than to actually follow them.

And if a worker gets sick? Fire them and give them 3 months wages. I don’t think that it’s the government intentionally trying to mislead people by depriving them of basic education. I think it’s more like the government doesn’t care enough. The population is so damn large that a brilliant nuclear engineer is not all that precious.

And even then… I do believe that it’s the local governmental corruption that makes everything so much worse. I have faith (maybe blindly) that the central government has at least some good intentions.

I think Mao put it best when he said (and I’m paraphrasing): “We’ll throw live bodies at our enemies until they run out of bullets”.

Is China starting to care more about her people? Yes. Is there a long way to go? Hell yes.

  11. the party, the party is always right
    and comrades the fact remains
    who fights for the right
    is always right
    against falsehood and exploitation

    *lilting*

  12. That’s rough. That family is lucky to have a father like that. The money helps I guess. The average person would’ve just let the family go.

Unfortunately, a lot of western methods of practicing psychiatry don’t necessarily work in Asian cultures. Then there’s the issue of what Chinese kid wants to study Psychology to become a shrink?

    • It’s odd how medical science in China is categorized as ‘Western medicine’, but other branches of science are not so categorized. They don’t call computer science ‘Western computer science’ or microprocessing ‘Western microprocessing’.

Traditional Chinese medicine is not a science, and Risperdal is effective regardless of the culture. That’s psychiatry, not psychology.

      • That’s only because Chinese medicine has been the backbone of medicine in the far east since the early BC. If China boasted the invention of computer science, I’m sure they’d call it Chinese computer science as well.

Granted that if I had to choose between Chinese vs. Western medication, I would choose Western. But in everyday practice? I use both, because I’ve been brought up on Chinese medicine.

Is there basic science research proof for Chinese medicine remedies? Yes… but incredibly limited amounts, simply because there is no funding for this field. And often times this research is funded by the Chinese government… I’ve read some of the literature and I can’t exactly say I’m impressed by their scientific process.

But thousands of years of empirical evidence have “proven” that certain herbs are useful for certain ailments. So no… it’s not a science… But does it work? Maybe… at least it has a placebo effect if nothing else.

Also it should be noted that Chinese meds are much cheaper than Western meds. And the vast majority of the Chinese population cannot afford Western medicine…

  13. what i know . When someone don’t work , and doesn’t have any social life any more . When
someone stay at home too long , doesn’t communicate with anybody ,with his neighbors , or
don’t want to have any friend . when someone want to stay alone , and when someone don’t
want to join the society . then he gets mental diseases .
Even playing card every night with friends , or often cooking together with friends , or little
things like that improve the situation .
And for the young people working , having a real full time job , is the most important .
real working , not having an easy job ,That’s cure the mental diseases .

Sorry for this men , he needs friends .

  14. This guy deserves a disability pension or carer’s allowance if the state ever gets to implementing one.

  15. This is such a sad story, my heart cried while i read it. Even if u think this is punishment for wat he did in the past,I still think it too harsh for one old man to endure, if i knew where he lived i would help him out, maybe give him some money. But what can we do, with a population of 1.3 billion and growing.. the gov cant help everybody

  16. The story of this family is heart wrenching. It’s an unfortunate state of affairs that the mentally ill are neglected by china’s policy/government.

My impression is that while a lot of the cities are bustling all the rural areas are *completely* neglected.

  17. Well said my friend

  18. I’m not a Christian, but if there is a God up there, this man will without doubt enter his kingdom.
