Warning: These historical photographs are very graphic.

This punishment was for extremely serious crimes. These photos are famous and appear all the time. This is just a recent example.

Comments from Tiexue:

chidun:

If these photographs make you uncomfortable, please forgive me!

This execution is beyond cruel!

sxhzpoiu22:

Wasn’t it said that the person cannot be allowed to die until the very last cut? Why is it that by the middle of the photos, the head was already cut off ??? And also, was it really 3,333 cuts?

接班人:

Aren’t there still 18-year-old female convicts sentenced to death?

I am sad for China’s men, your insult/abuse towards China’s women is the cause of China going bad.

jjy00000:

Fuck! Yet another zhuang bi! As long as that person indeed committed a crime, what does she being a woman or not or how old she is have anything to do with it? Is the law made specifically for men only???

rajk747:

Suggest China reinstate this kind of punishment, specifically against corrupt officials.

江梳公主:

Why are you posting this kind of post! What kind of rubbish are you advocating! Is this fun? Pervert/deviant.

接班人:

Mothers, on the whole, are the wombs and breasts that gave us life, us respecting them is respecting ourselves, which is raising our own positions. When killing women, it is not necessary to have them on their knees or to cut off their reproductive organs, as people who know to cherish mothers are noble.

小兵司南:

Too cruel! Is it necessary for an execution to be this way?

打不赢jiu跑:

Each era does what each era does, unless you guys could ask a primitive man to no longer drink blood and wear fur, sit in a Western restaurant, and immediately pick up a small knife and fork to eat steak? Don’t you understand any historical materialism!

hanbing1110:

A sick/ill society [Qing Dynasty], even if foreigners did not invade, it itself would have slowly died away.

专业民兵001:

I’ve been on Tiexue for two years now and this group of pictures has made me the most angry! Doing this to an old woman, using such a cruel punishment, where is the humanity! Looks like liberation from the Qing Dynasty is Founder Sun’s [Yat-sen] incomparable greatness! I hate feudalism, hate ignorance, and I salute our founder!

RedKnife:

The West doesn’t have torture? Kao!

woshimingming:

Humans are the most cruel animals, also the most savage animals, also the most fragile animals.

chidun:

No matter whether the photographs are posted or not, this kind of torture indeed existed in our country’s history. Knowing this is also a good thing.

Actually, it is said that there are death penalties/executions even more cruel than this in the West.

Nowadays, some countries still have torture.

sailor_chin:

It appears that this is not the authentic dismemberment execution. It looks like in that time of decline/decay, even punishments were in decline/decay.

The dismemberment execution I recall requiring 500 cuts, with the very last being a stab into the criminal’s chest before he can die, and if the criminal dies before enough cuts are made, the person cutting will be in trouble.

The punishment are savage, but sometimes it is very effective.

Some photographs of male criminals suffering the same death penalty:

Some English information from Wikipedia:

Slow slicing (simplified Chinese: 凌迟; traditional Chinese: 凌遲; pinyin: língchí, alternately transliterated Ling Chi or Leng T’che), also translated as the slow process, the lingering death, or death by a thousand cuts, was a form of execution used in China from roughly AD 900 until its abolition in 1905. In this form of execution, the condemned person was killed by using a knife to methodically remove portions of the body over an extended period of time. The term língchí derives from a classical description of ascending a mountain slowly.

Lingchi was reserved for crimes viewed as especially severe, such as treason and killing one’s parents. The process involved tying the person to be executed to a wooden frame, usually in a public place. The flesh was then cut from the body in multiple slices in a process that was not specified in detail in Chinese law and therefore most likely varied. In later times, opium was sometimes administered either as an act of mercy or as a way of preventing fainting. The punishment worked on three levels: as a form of public humiliation, as a slow and lingering death, and as a punishment after death.

  1. China carried out 5,000 to 6,000 executions in 2007. The same year, the United States executed 42 people. On a per-capita basis, China is estimated to have carried out 30 times the number of executions the United States did.

The exact numbers of people executed in China is classified as a state secret. China is thus not even public with the huge numbers. Simply because China is a dictatorship. Just open your eyes, and see that the West does not only provide you with funds, technical competence, internet, powerplants – but also – creative thinking – democracy – and freedom of speech.

  2. In fact, the entire Chinese dictator apparatus is full of this repelling lack of justice.

    http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/en/doc/2003-12/23/content_292554.htm
    - in the rest of the civilized world known as ni bis in idem, but in China more known as we’re-corrupted-there-is-no-system-adn-we-do-whatever-we-feel-like.

Now, with Obama finally realizing all of this, we might have a shift. He is receiving the Lama, he is exporting weapons to Taiwan and the Congress is issuing criticism of Chinese oppression towards its own people. And the Chinese dictatorship and its lackeys can little do, as they realize how weak, replaceable and insignificant they really are.

    • Imperialistic propaganda, as usual full of lies. Its main purpose is to make the world forget about american crimes:

USA started it murderous history from killing almost ALL population of North America (around 100 million of native Americans). In recent history USA started 2000 wars and war conflicts, it is the only country in the world that nuked peaceful civilian population, all its criminal riches are result of its bloodthirsty robbery of other nations and people and slavery. On top of that USA is the world greatest polluter of our Earth – it is responsible for more that 40% of all the world pollution.

      • Jan you are an obvious Chinese propaganda baby—and believe me I know about Chinese propaganda as I was a news broadcaster at China Radio International in Beijing—you can google me “News and Reports” if you don’t believe me. Even the supposed educated in China are brainwashed beyond recognition–I’m also a graduate of 北师大so I’m not your average foreign devil.

      • These death penalties happened for sure !

But Jan – i agree with your opinion on USA – they go on like the Roman Empire and everybody knows how it ended …

I often get into trouble saying things like that for most – bad educated – Americans dont wanna believe and only fight back with insults but no arguments !

      • Just shut up

  3. Jan, you are just missing the point…

most other countries don’t have a government backed think tank that puts out propaganda xinhua/china daily style. therefore doesnt try to put out propaganda to make the rest of the world forget her crimes.
The CCP does, it uses the Japanese invasion to divert attention away from Tiananmen (ie search for tiananmen massacre and you get directed to nanjing massacre), however when they want to bash the US, they will like you demonstrated, turn to the nuclear bomb and use Japan as an example but in a whole different way. This is typical of dictatorships.
Just read 1984, which was written as a fiction book in 1948 by George Orwell. It’s an important book, so pick up a chinese translation (if you can).

Sure every countries media is filtered slightly, but most western newspapers with discuss issues such as the ones you mention above. Fully.
The US has figures like michael moore who write books and makes films on the points you made above, trashing and calling to question the US. If a guy like that existed in China, his work would never see the light of day.

So to re-iterate my point and other posters’ point for the thousandth time: Yes we are aware of western ills. These are discussed in our media. We are taught from a young age to discuss them at school. However, you are over reacting to a post made by a CHINESE person about a torture method in China’s past.

Your point above is so unrelated to the original post of the torture photos made by a chinese person that it’s just pointless trying to argue.

    • Mei Nu, thank you for your suggestions, but I read “1984″, “Animal Farm” and early Burmese short stories of Orwell. BTW, his experience of British cruelty towards Burmese population, which he witnessed during his service there, influenced his works a lot, and made him a Marxist. And “1984″ is not about China, or USSR – quite opposite, its about where post WWII Britain and US were going… And it is not my opinion, it is what his biographers are saying.

BTW, I liked “Animal Farm” more. “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than the others” – does not it remind you the US democracy and their attitude to the world?:)

      • To Jan, I understand how you feel. I felt bad when China was always demonized by the west as far as the media concerns. But we can not deny that a lot of those report are true.
On the side of the Chinese, when people claim that we are insecure and sensitive, consider: Chinese media always try to project an image that West is friendly and in good term with China (and people know so little about how really the west is or how people outside China thinks), so I guess it is a natural response to be defensive when we realize that we have been so hated or prejudiced. (and who dont denfend their own country anyway, I dont think any person is happy to hear so many negative comment about their country and themselves!)
I think if Chinese media are not controlled by government and Chinese people are free to think, we will probably think a bit differently and maybe there will be less mis-understanding.

  4. ha ha ha!

I’d get your head out your a-nus and re-read the book. you shouldn’t need to read a book about 1984 if you’ve read the book. The themes are incredibly obvious, so something tells me you have never read it.

He wrote against totalitarianism and for socialist democracy.
orwell was not a marxist and his experience of fascist spain inspired him to write 1984. He was afraid that post war Britain would lose democracy, as at that time in was seen that communist powers and lack of freedom of speech was more powerful than democracies.

He was a supporter of socialism (the current UK political party in power was founded on a socialist ideal), 1984 is about the perversion of his cherished socialism.

I didn’t read that in a biography written by someone else about him, but actually in a collection of essays written by him.

He wanted to show the potential perversions of communism and fascism. A major theme is censorship and hatred towards other nations, and a revolution betrayed by authoritarian defenders.

The novel was set in Britain, to show that english speaking countries were not superior to others and could also fall under a totalitarian regime.

Animal farm is corruption of leaders during revolutions, that’s where, ‘all animals are equal, some are more equal than others.’ THe revolution starts with the pigs mobalising all the animals (much like the peasants) and then raising themselves about them.
“The events and characters in Animal Farm satirise Communism, authoritarian government and human gullibility generally; Snowball is Leon Trotsky and the head pig, Napoleon, is Stalin.”

‘communism would work, only if people were angels.’

Orwell also criticised the British press for censorship of criticism of the USSR during the second world war, because they were our allies (which was why he was sure that democracy in the UK would dissolve as western powers were acting to support a totalitarian dictatorship).

Everyone is aware that china is not communist anymore. It’s capitalist to the core, but not in anyway the world has seen before. government = single party, economy = capitalism with significant state ownership. and political ideology that is nationalistic and reactive, supported by a wounded ego, rather than marxist.

And yes, I agree western powers are hypocritical, but ser’sly animal farm was not about that, but corrupt leaders in revolutions that could happen anywhere, but were particularly prevalent in communist movements.. Fuck, the uk is trying again claiming it’s stake in the Fauklands right now. It makes me so mad, but this isn’t democracy at work here, it’s capitalism. The cause of world ills. Everyone is reaching for oil, china gets there’s from iran and middle eastern countries, the uk wants to secure the fauklands, so that we can continue with our materialistic obsession that can only be supported by a livestyle that consumes oil for power.

    • Look, I really see no point to go on with this. You guys see one side of life, the rest of the world sees the other. If you like reading, read a Chinese gushi, which is two times older than European civilization, about old wise men and an elephant.

And also, all CCP propaganda machine is a kindergarten in comparison with CNN only… And you have hundreds of cnns brainwashing you daily.

      • To Jan:
CNN is officially not run by government so we can not really critise when they publish whatever story they want. But they are not objective which is normal though.
LIke they didont report that US criminals landrary their money in Swizerlands (so as criminals from France or Germany). So if someone input 1 million there, they wont be asked where the money come from, but be treated as Vip.
On the other hand, try not feel bad when people critise China – first they critise everything anyway (hahaha) second they all got their own trouble anyway. a lot people in France or Germany dont know that they have to work until 65 (now maybe longer if Eurozone collapse) but in Greece you can retire when 55. BUt now France and Germany have to pay for their Greek colleagues when they faked the record and spend too much…
I think maybe they can publish some INTERESTING topic here like winter olympics or birth controls…

      • yeah whatever daphie…I think you’ll find people are aware of the age of retirement thank you, as well as how in how benefits in other countries are better than in their own.
EG Sweden – very good unemployment benefit (ie when you don’t/can’t find a job the government will pay you an amount of money), much better than the UK which is only about 60 pounds a week.

Anyway, Jan, the UK doesn’t have CNN, so I can’t really comment there, although it is well known that FOX is run by republican ass-holes who just push out lazy propaganda, hence you get programmes like the daily show with jon stewart that make fun of OTT pro-rebublican or pro-governmental news broadcasts.

Another point is I certainly don’t see the world in this black and white way that you are insinuating. I think that you are guilty of that yourself. The reason being is we have more freedom with media, be it books, films, newspapers. Therefore issues are properly discussed. We certainly don’t have a government run media agency, the closest would be the BBC and that is independent from direct government, and it’s not the one and only news outlet. It’s criticised a lot.

Sure there are papers like the daily mail that are for idiots who are uneducated and still harp on about the empire, largely because they don’t have enough historical knowledge to be embarrassed. But there are papers like the guardian, the times and independent that criticise and discuss topics.
        http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2003/sep/06/september11.iraq
        http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/iraq

The result of this is many people don’t see the world as west = right, many people become politically active.By that I mean, they develop an interest in world politics and READ and THINK about issues rather than become aggressively nationalistic. You can see this in comment sections on articles, people discussing both sides, rather than 90% just shouting some nationalistic nonsense about foreigners or chinese (seeing as china daily seems sure that the rest of the world is pre-occupied with china, when actually there are few articles on china).

It is important that a nation questions its leaders about it actions, and doesn’t see them as some weird father figure, otherwise that culture will stagnate politically and creatively. This was something Sun Yat Sen advocated.

        • Mei Nu, you might go back to my first comment and notice that I only said, that whatever appalling Ling Chi execution was, it was not worse that anything Europe had in its penalty books at that time, and did not make Chinese any special in this respect. And this fair observation immediately resulted in all-out aggressive attacks from a number of people here.

      • Exactly – most dont even know where the countries are they invade . if you wanna have a channel that looks over the borders of the US – you must pay for it ! and the rest enjoys game -shows and stupid talk shows . i admit Germany and japan has the same crap on TV for the same reasons : to make / keep us dumb and not thinking whats going on !

  5. The Chicago mafia is pretty good at this stuff too:

“In 1961 the Chicago mob suspected that William ‘Action’ Jackson was snitching to the FBI, but they weren’t sure. So they did the only logical thing to find out: They took him to a plant and hung him on a meat hook, inserting it into his rectum. Then they bashed his knees with hammers and electrocuted his genitals with a cattle prod. He was left on the hook for three days before he finally died. Funnily enough, he hadn’t snitched! Well, funny to us at least.”

“Alberto G. Agueci once threatened mob boss Stefano Magaddino (in 1961). Once. As far as coroners were able to tell, the final moments of Agueci’s life went like this: His jaw was smashed, half of his teeth were yanked, his eyes were blinded with a blowtorch, 30 pounds of flesh were cut from his still-living body, he was tied up with barbed wire and his genitals were stuffed into his mouth.”

  6. This is why Westerners don’t consider the Chinese to be human. This and their attitudes towards animals.

    • Well, unfortunately because of people like you, Steve, many chinese also consider westerners 洋鬼, rather than humans, which make me, personally, very sad, because I have lived in Europe and know, that you are a just a sick minority.

Also, if you believe that chicken, cows and pig that you eat in billions in the West are less precious God’ creatures that some other animals, eaten in Asia, you are a big hypocrite.

  7. I just wonder if the democratic way of frying people on electric chair is any better? Some of such executions lasted 30 minutes and more and the subjects received several electric shocks which made a medium-rare steak out of them… I have heard that in US they can apply this sort of execution even to teenagers.

    • To Czech:

there is no point in arguing with these people. Electric chair is good and nice and there actually a lot of americans who would prefer it to the death of natural causes.:) Executing convicted criminals in China is a barbarity, confirming that the Chinese are not human, but bombing into pieces and burning with napalm millions of women and children in Vietnam, Afganistan and Iraq is a demonstration of the utmost humanity, so natural to Democratic People of the USA!

Whatever information you quote to them from publicly available sources it always would be the total BS picked out of your arsehole, because it contradicts their view on how the things should be.

      Useless… May God help them.

  8. I didn’t know that women were also sentenced to “slow slicing”. They cut her head off, but not until her breasts had been sliced first. Theey were not really “merciful”!

  9. Why does it say the person in the first series is female? The face is male; the body is male.

  10. Chinese are barbarians, thats what western powers RIGHTLY knew when they cut in pieces this rotten arrogant little backward potato CHINA during the Opium war. Chinese are worse than animals. they have no culture. they have no morale. they have no compassion. they lie, they cheat, they are lazy, absolute egoists of the worst kind on this planet, they always look for shortcuts and are the fouliest opportunists on this planet. They have nothing in common with a civilized human being. They are able to do the same again as seen in this real photos, because it is in their blood. They are like arrogant rotten ballons filled with stinking air and condemned to fail since ever. China must be erased from this planet. It is a pile of shit with no culture at all but inhabited by animals who wrongly believe that their monkey faces are better than others.

  11. Stop farting through your mouth, my son! You’re making a jackass out of yourself while blowing your own dad. Just swallow it down like a champ, my boy, haha.

  12. 1905! 20th Century. Even in middle age Europe they did not do that. And read about it, there were public executions in Europe that where cruel (torn apart criminals in 4 pieces tied on 4 horses etc.).

Well this medieval method is still more human than THIS!

They cutted people in China on the public market slowly in pieces like PIGS, like a piece of meat. And that was China in the 20th Century! It shows how backwards and stone aged China was and deep inside it still is. Looks what they with animals: They skin dogs alive and much more! They are still the same and still they are backward Qin Dynasty China! If Japan would have won the war, China would have been civilized! (Say thank you to USA. YOU chinese you were not able to throw out Japanese from China by yourself. Without USA, the japanese would have had conquered all of this land.

Why did China survive 5000 years? Because it was far away from advanced and superior european cultures. China is far away and located at the ass of the world, that saved them.

We all know: If China would have had a direct border with Rome, Greek, or any other advanced ancient European culture or tribe, or the advanced Arabians, they would have been assimilated and destroyed and occupied THOUSANDS of years ago. The first time in their history they have had real contact and confrontation with the world:

    During the Opium wars.

These wars (i would call it development aid that brought China from the Metal age to the modern times) are the best example for the theory mentioned above!!!
They cannot stand any pressure. And they hoped to stop english, french, german, spanish and portuguese cannons with pompous shows, fireworks, whores and corrupt official deals with the western nations. Ridiculous. We all know the results. Chinese, thank western powers who broke apart your arrogant weak card house during the Opium wars. Thats why you know have electricity and cars.

They are weak and insecure and inferior but still filled with stinking stupid arrogance. Even know. Ridiculous. And they know it themselves. China is a ridiculous drama.

    • Do not forget that it is the civilized Europeans, who invented making lampshades of human skin. And they skinned people alive, because this way it was easier to preserve the natural look of the material. It was only 65 years ago. Hanging people on the meathooks was another amusement at that time. However, from your post above it is evident, that you hardly read a single book, poor illiterate freak…

  13. do people really deserve this kind of penaluty and execution?

this gives me the shivers and the sorry for those who died without having a chance of been forgiven.

  14. You think this is bad. You should see what the Japanese did to the Chinese in Nanking out of “fun.” They viciously raped women sticking bayonets/sticks in vaginas just to see how far they would go. Then they would put fuel saturated cloths up the vaginas and light up. And they did it for entertainment – not punishment.

  15. It’s in chinese peoples dna to be barbaric and subhuman.

    • PARP PARP TROLL DETECTED!

Yeah, the Chinese peoples and, oh, every other race.

How are the Chinese any worse (or different) to the Japanese in China? Spanish in Latin America? Americans at My Lai (and Abu Graib).

In the words of Terminator 2: “It’s in your nature to destroy yourselves”.

  16. If there is a hell, the executioners are there now.

  17. WOW…
    that is some scary $hit!!
    Definitely ghastly, but unmistakeably intriguing!!

In fact, these Kodak moments might belong on http://www.rotten.com. (if you haven’t seen this site, check it out y’all!!)

  18. Chinese are a bunch of animals.

  19. 5000 years of so-called civilization, eh you Chinese nationalists? I recommend tossing this into their faces when extreme Chinese nationalists bring up their BS about how having “5000″ years of continuing civilization somehow puts them on some pedestal above other societies, ancient and modern.

  20. 5000 years of culture. kao

  21. wow that punishment is cruel but if they truly did something really bad then i guess they deserve it. i do feel bad though for them i mean imagine seeing your bones and bleeding and dying slowly in front of everyone. that is harsh and inhumane, but i guess only very few people commited that after hearing the consequence of someone else.

  22. I was rather hoping that after seeing these images, people would be inspired and determined to abolish any form of torture for ever. But after reading the posts here, most cant seem to get past the emotional gut knee-jerk reactions and just get more angry at each other. For me the lesson is that firstly, torture has never stopped people committing crimes, and that the “treason” excuse has been used by everyone in power all over the world that opposes them. Secondly, when will the ones that are doing such horrific things come to realize that what they are doing is far worse than the crimes these criminals committed?!

  23. Think of this next time you buy a toaster for US12.99,
an iPhone or any other cheap product made in china.

  24. This good punishment is most appropriate for treason, abortion, parent murder, spouse murder, homosexuality, pedophilia, adultery, fornication, rape, Chinese & other Communist Fascists, Nazis, Illegal Immigrants (especially Mexicans), Anti-Christians, Animal Abusers, etc.. If we executed all who deserved it, there would be no “population crisis” on Planet Earth! :)

  25. (Wasn’t it said that the person cannot be allowed to die until the very last cut? Why is it that by the middle of the photos, the head was already cut off ??? And ) I was read about ling chi if executioner is show mercy and if the offender’s crime mild then executioner may cut victim’s head early(wikipedia) btw executioners are giving some posined water to guilty it’s not for mercy victim should faint or shouldn’t pass shock. must be a conscious while torutre going on

  26. The dark side that thinks up these horrific acts seems universal. No countryor ethnic group is without it’s own history. What also is universal is that it is men which perpetrate such ugly realities!

  27. This is human cruelty, of a magnitude, beyond belief. I can’t believe people could be so heartless, ignorant, cruel and stupid.

I’m a practicing Buddhist. I strongly believe that, everything everyone experiences, is caused by past actions. The karma created by those who are torturing, is incalculably negative.

We need love in this world. To dwell on our history, in this respect, is useless. We need to look to a beautiful future.

May Bodhichitta flourish, and dissolve the scourge of ignorance.

  28. Nope, your Chinese Australian embarrassment will forever be immortalized on Chinasmack so visitors 100 years from now can stumble across your post and use your words to examine our current social system and try to piece together how ignorant and primitive our society was during this age.

    Welcome to forever ^^

  29. China’s a most paradoxical country. When civilized, at the height of civilizations. When barbaric, sinking to the lowest depths of barbarism. It’s one-child policy has resulted in worst barbarism – violence against babies, born and unborn. What will result is a society and culture top-heavy in testosterone, NEVER a good thing, without the “civilizing” effect women have on men. What will also result is an increasing level of fagotry.

  30. Considering student the world over need to be informed so that they don’t make the same mistakes. I thank the author of this site for keeping us all informed of the atrocities committed in the past.

  31. chinese commments are great, especially that very, very smooth doctrination on historical materialism was absolutely priceless. lmfao

  32. Drawn and quartered was a Chinese practice too, except it is five horses, not four. There is one for the head. Mongols used horses to stomp on people put in sacks. But death by a thousand cuts (3000, actually) was the slowest death. Took hours.

And by “modern times”, is 1800 modern enough for you ? That’s the time the last “death by thousand cuts” was performed. As you can see, photography was invented, and introduced to China.

And it is not just for crime against the state (or the emperor and his families), or murdering the parents. It is also for wives murdering the husbands, but not for husbands murdering wives.

  33. Is there no other argument on this fucking site than ‘yes but’ you complete utter twat, think for a second I wouldnt defend medieval torture by travelling hundreds of years back in time and saying yes in the future the Chinese are cutting tits of old women still, so I’m ok! (still being a point of reference in past time, although I wouldnt be surprised)

  34. Is it really surprising that the Chinese can actually think, and that they can actually recognize their own mistakes and errors?

I find it amusing and ironic that people can be brainwashed by western media into thinking that all chinese people are brainwashed and robotic.

  35. Actually a couple had to mention that the West also has torture… though it is amazing they didn’t directly blame this on the West I agree..

China only seems to exist in many retarded Nationalists opinion as a contrast to the West… “The west also has torture!!” Well… I guess it’s all ok in that case!

  36. other than english there is no finer language for cussing than mandarin..thats the truth

  37. and if you instill fear into the criminals that will stop it from being carried out on the first place.

  38. many retarded racists can’t wrap their minds around the fact that that’s not the point.

No, it’s not all okay. Learn to improve yourself first before talking shit about other people’s countries.

  39. I’m not sure the PRC is really the Easter audience they’re referring to. Maybe they meant Thailand.

  40. This is a general response, not just to you, Jones.

chinaSMACK’s audience is of course predominated by foreigners. It translates Chinese internet content into English. Why would Chinese people, who can read the original source material, and largely can’t read English, come here? Why would anyone expect that? So of course chinaSMACK is targeting or catering to foreigners. They spelled it out themselves.

However, I think a very large reason why they are successful is precisely because they didn’t go out of their way to cater to what foreigners want to read and talk about, breaking certain molds and expectations. And it has been rewarded with the traffic it has now (1.3m pageviews according to the AFP article) for doing so.

Of course, a large amount of chinaSMACK’s traffic probably does indeed come from its sensationalist content. But isn’t that s entirely within what they’ve professed to deliver: whatever they consider is popular on the Chinese internet? Is it that surprising that sex and violence also dominates the Chinese internet? Not really. chinaSMACK is pretty “in your face”. The name fits, doesn’t it?

As with everything, you will get out of each post and out of this site what you will. In other words, your mileage may vary. Different people will have different reactions and gleam different conclusions or considerations of significance.

For example, with this post, I was reminded of just how fucking gruesome things could be back then. I learned about how different people’s sensitivities can be. I flich just glancing at the photos, but that may not be the case for other people, or for the people who managed to stand around and watch the slow slicing from start to finish. I saw several examples of unprovoked attention deflection attempts amongst fenqing and possible wumaodang members (on the original Chinese post). Oh, and I learned that they cut the boobs off the men too, not just the women.

And I haven’t started with the comments section yet. There’s plenty to learn from here too, from the reactions of those that would comment. For example, why do some people perpetuate the same behavior they themselves decry? Why do some people accuse chinaSMACK of being evil like the Chinese while others accuse it of China bashing? How people interpret this site alone is fascinating. But hey, that’s just me. Others may read more or less into these things.

Now, I personally like that chinaSMACK posts what it will. I’m here to learn from them, to learn what they have to share, not to tell them to teach me or tell me what I want. I personally like that they usually keep their commentary to a bare minimum. This lets us make what we will of what they post, interpreting (even misinterpreting) as we will, discussing and arguing as we will over what we think is important or interesting.

Of course, they are inherently influencing the conversation with what topics and comments they select to translate, but let’s be honest here, that’s unavoidable. Furthermore, there’s nothing wrong with Fauna or the rest of them focusing on, translating, and posting what they themselves find interesting. Their interests are definitely going to shine through what they post. Running this blog is as much self-expression for them as posting our comments is for us.

Finally, I think chinaSMACK does actually consider what foreigners are interested in. However, I’d caution against them listening too much, especially the comments section. Those of us who comment probably don’t represent more than 5% of the website’s traffic. We’re not representative. This isn’t the first time someone has complained about the content or threatened this site with failure if it doesn’t conform to that person’s preferences, and it won’t be the last time either. chinaSMACK has only grown bigger and more successful each time. Success can come from listening to your target audience or pleasantly surprising your target audience. It can come from following your visitors or leading them. In both, chinaSMACK’s present success comes far more from the latter than the former. Visitors come and go, so let chinaSMACK be what its creator and contributors intend it to be.

  41. hurrhurrhurr

So you are implying that the west is not outsourcing their industry to China for doing profit for themselves, since in their own country they cant pollute as much as in China?
Look. It’s that old sheme again: The west wants to have a clean and tidy country, but dont want to give up their cosumerist lifestyle. What to do? Outsource it to the third world! Produce the shit there and pollute their land while whining about it in Coppenhagen for diverting the attention of the mindless sheeps at home from other internal problems.

But rest assured. China at least is clever enough to use their share on profit to try to become such a country themselves. Maybe one day China can manage to outsource their problems too. Then maybe they will send back the dirt to the west and stop polluting and killing themselves over other people’s problems.

  42. Yeah fuck them!! I mean exterminate the emos…Not related to Fauna though

  43. Wrong.

Legalism was never fully abolished, because it simply worked for the ruling dynasties.
Even after Qin Shihuang, when the people rebelled and confucianism became the state ideology, the Han-dynasty and all succeding dynasties still acted according the legalist core-ideology.
Confucianism was merely a “cover” for the legalist rule.

Just like the most democratic communist republics, who where just communist and democratic in name, but in reality just another vanilla dictatorship, China was also just confucianist in name, but legalist/facist in practice.

hell, why I am explaining this shit? just go to wikishit and read it yourself.

  44. I’d like to. Which Wikipedia article would you recommend?

  45. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legalism_%28Chinese_philosophy%29

    “Decline

In later dynasties, Legalism was discredited and ceased to be an independent school of thought. However, both ancient and modern Confucian observers of Chinese politics have argued that some Legalist ideas have merged with mainstream Confucianism and still play a major role in government. The philosophy of imperial China has been described as a Confucian exterior covering a core of Legalism (Chinese: 儒表法裡; pinyin: rú biăo fă lǐ; literally “Confucian, the external surface; Legalism, the interior”). In other words, Confucian values are used to sugarcoat the harsh Legalist ideas that underlie the Imperial system. During the Sui and Tang dynasty, Buddhist ideas were also part of the external face of the imperial system.

There was a brief revival of Legalism during the Sui dynasty’s efforts to reunify China. After the Sui dynasty was replaced by the Tang dynasty, the Tang government still used the government structure left behind by the Sui dynasty, albeit with much reduced punishments.

More recently, Mao Zedong, who had some knowledge of ancient Chinese philosophy, compared himself with Qin Shi Huang and publicly approved of some Legalist methods. One such method approved in the 1980s under Deng Xiaoping administration is the reward and punishment, which has increased the size of the Beijing government in the process. However, since the 1990s the related concept of the rule of law has gained currency.”

  46. Indeed it is not secrect and you learn history well. I saw on TV a lot Americans dont really know how many states they have or where their general locations are..
So what is the problem if someone want to bring up some historic facts? At least he did some homework before he starts to talk instead of talking B****** (a lot politicians do it anyway).

Maybe you can have a look:

  47. “Bringing up historical England to counter a claim against modern China is retarded.” it does look like you have difficulties in understanding written materials. I will repeat for the sake of clarity

    - Drag, Draw and Quarter execution was last time practiced in the USA in 1840s. Ling Chi was last practiced in China in 1890s.

    - Executions in 2009: USA – 52, Iraq – 77, China – 55 (US executed FIVE times more people per 1 mln of its population than China did).

    - Also, the last black person was lynched (hanged and burned) in the USA in 1968 – so much for “modern China” BS.

  48. 肏美國帝國主義! Learn other languages as well, mate, and you would discover what people around the world think of the US imperialism and its crimes. May be this discovery will free your brains of all these “we are the great democracy and you are s…t” propaganda. BTW, about Obama meeting Dalai Lama – may be its better for him to meet Osama Ben Laden and discuss his brave struggle for freedom against american imperialistic agression?

  49. >>>Poor baby bust be terrified every day. The big bad USA Empire is probably hiding in his closet, waiting to jump out the moment he falls asleep.

I think Jan is the only person who takes the 1960s Chinese propaganda posters literally.>>>

Tell this to 1,5 million Iraqi people your fellow countrymen killed over the last few years. Or you think their families are jumping our of their panties to kiss you for the “democracy” you brought there?

  50. >>>The replies to you were pretty much about the random “facts” that you conjured out of your ass for the sake to make a point>>>

It is very interesting that you formulated it this way. All facts, which you do not like, came out of somebody’s ass… Only you is the source of the ultimate truth. Sounds awfully familiar to Adolf Hitler, if you remember the guy. Or Shirō Ishii. Well, it just confirms to me the direction, where the US is going…

  51. everywhere in the world it’s atrocity. If I remembered correctly, Spain used to have a practice of lining up the rebels and counting down the line to pick every five person for execution. research tupacamaru, he died really horrifically.

  52. The Chinese government still tortures its own citizens like this, but not in public, along with forced abortions. It is essentially a slave labor economy and poses the greatest danger to the world as they place absolutely no value on human or animal life whatsoever. Yes, China will take over as world leader. Back in 1990 our economy was TRIPLE their economy, even though they had four times the population. Now their economy will equal ours in a few years. The still have four times the population. Nevertheless, they will soon run the world. The Chinese hate white people, and are looking forward to running the world after 5,000 years. One of the first things they will do is invade Australia and New Zealand and take over those two countries.

  53. o my ..they so retarded – in germany they are called American Nazis !

  54. You are right !

we should stop pointing on each other as you say : EVERY nation had done bad things – some stopped some still do til today …
