Elite Beijing 101 High School Holds Coming-of-Age Ceremony

Beijing 101 Middle School coming of age ceremony.

Recently, Beijing 101 High School held a coming-of-age ceremony for students at the Old Summer Palace made famous by its destruction during the Second Opium War. Beijing 101 Middle School is an elite school attended by many children of government officials and military leaders. It is also notable as the alma mater of current Chinese president Xi Jinping.

The traditional Chinese coming-of-age ceremony is similar to what is practiced in Korea and Japan, where young men and women entering adulthood will don traditional costumes to signify becoming responsible members of society. However, much to the disgust of netizens, most of the school’s girls pictured wore skimpy outfits and high heels. Many netizens commented that such display is not fitting for an event dedicated to maturity and adulthood.

Comments from Sina Weibo:

@蜜思沉:

Why are they dressed like prostitutes?

@大哥_别打脸:

Their sugar daddies are smiling.

@光头的逆袭:

Coming-of-age ceremony? They become adults by dressing up like hookers? Adulthood is mental maturity, about handling things calmly, and not about wearing high heels coming out to sell flesh.

@oliviamz:

Where is the Hanfu? Japan has its kimono and Korea has its Hanbok, all traditional ethnic clothing, so shouldn’t Han people wear Hanfu to be dignified? Look at the nonsense they are wearing! Ridiculous! Without proper ceremony, without traditional dress/clothes, this so-called coming-of-age ceremony is just an empty one, and they will only make themselves laughing stocks.

@W-眉如黛:

Adults are to carry responsibility in society so what social role are they planning to have in society dressed like this> hate

@赤备突袭:

After the the coming-of-age ceremony ends, they can go check-in at the nightclubs and hotels.

@Joker德:

Shut your filthy mouths. 101 High School is a prestigious school, whose students all excel in their studies, and not only are they from Beijing but from all over the country. A significant number of the students in the school are children of high-level officials, [business/company] executives, and the wealthy. President Xi also graduated from here. You say these students dress up like prostitutes? Are you qualified to say that? May I ask, are your kids better than them???

@岩啸:

At the Old Summer Palace dressed like they came out of Tiny Times, so what does this say?

@piyoopiyoo:

The boys look like insurance salesmen, and the girls look like they work in the nightclubs…

@我是吴咔咔:

In Japan, they would wear kimonos…

@差价游戏:

All kinds of high-end pussy.

@LP-SV:

They’ve probably forgotten the history of how the Old Summer Palace was burned down.

@亚平宁的挚爱:

Japanese people would not dress like this at the Hiroshima memorial, and American students would not dress like this at the Pearl Harbor memorial, so this is a problem of education. Some students think dressing like this makes them fashionable and trendy, but they’re gravely mistaken. On one hand they want to copy laowai, but on the other they can’t even diligently think about the true meaning/significance of a coming-to-age ceremony. Foreigners dress according to occasion, they don’t wear an evening dress all day from morning to night.

    • Riddler

      No they shouldn’t.

    • Probotector

How do you stop a bunch of Chinese guys from gettin’ laid?

      Throw ’em a basket ball.

      • Riddler

Or this. They’d run for their lives.

        • Probotector

Yeah, they’d be all like “she’s too dark! eww!”

          • carmouflagger

“Her legs are too thick! yuck” Dummies!

          • Stefan Xu

yes, i agree she is too dark

          • Probotector

Then you’re a racist, and a shameless one too. You’re also a sexist judging from your previous posts. I wonder, does anybody like you?

          • Stefan Xu

Asians, actually Asians even have more extreme views than me.

        • lonetrey / Dan

          I think she’s hot! :D

      • Zappa Frank

it’s a waste, never seen people put so much effort in a sport and fail so miserable.

        • Probotector

Yeah they really suck at b’ball. Do guys in the US still wear the basketball kit? ‘Cause Chinese guys always wear that shit, even to class.

    • Dumbledore

They’re 18 and have spent the past 10 years cramming for 16 hours a day. Even the ones who got a free pass on copying stuff, entering a good school and generally relaxing still had to spend 11-12 hours in classes 6 days a week. I can’t speak for the man-children of 18 to 25 roaming the streets, but while in high school, it’s the insanity of the Chinese educational system holding people back.

    • Bear

Shut up you sleazy western dog.

      • I love Sexy Chinese girls

        Shut up virgin boy!

        • Probotector

          wtf? He’s Back?!

        • Bear

You’re clearly the virgin here, as are all losers with yellow fetish.

  • twelve ways

The hookers where I live tend to dress in tracksuits/jeans…

I don’t think these girls are dressed any sexier than most rich women/girls you meet on the street in any big city.

    • Zappa Frank

true, but you should consider that they are supposed to be the elite’s children during an official cerimony… not common people walking on the streets

  • willie miller

I can’t believe those girls are wearing dresses and makeup. Makes me lose hope for humanity.

    • iLL

I dont know where you are from, but most high school girls when i was going to school in North America wear make up and i am sure its even more now.

      • I love Sexy Chinese girls

        He’s obviously being sarcastic. LOLZ

        • iLL

my bad! lol. Sarcasm doesnt go well over the internet!

      • Stefan Xu

most girls and women in China don’t wear makeup. So to wear makeup in China makes you wierd.

        • Riddler

Most girls in china dont wear makeup? Been around shaghai recently?

          • Stefan Xu

I said MOST girls, Shanghai is just a couple of percentage of China’s population. Outside China girls usually don’t makeup.

      • willie miller

Where I went to school we were too poor to afford clothes. we used to have class completely naked.

  • iLL

Sooo..there rich elite kids. They want to show off…whatever, its there money. I am sure kids in the OC, BH, etc they go all out on there proms and stuff, other people in the country don’t get all pissy about it when they are rolling in expensive clothes and cars. What they do with there own money and time doesn’t affect me. I have no idea why adults care what young children of rich families do with there money. Lots of times its just jealousy.

    • Rick in China

Yep – haters abound when others flaunt their shit. I don’t even see that much flaunting going on in those photos, and definitely not the ‘skimpiness’ people seem to be claiming about, I mean, shit, I suppose that miley cyrus sledge-blowing video was banned or something? (to mention comparative value of what really skimpy is)… or shit, even binlang girls selling beetlenut in taiwan.

      • Warlock

Here we go again. Perhaps we should address the lazy canadians who cannot even get out of bed on sunday morning to teach part time at a kindergarten (that really takes some ineptitude, it’s not breaking rocks in a quarry or rocket science, only teaching kids, but instead he chose to sleep in with a hangover!).

Then the Canadians at the Bookworm in Chengdu, who tend to be haughty to Americans and Brits and anyone not in their little circle of chinese girlfriend or born in the maple leaf flag land.

Then the Canadian who told me that Canada and China have the best relationship than other countries, because Canada always helps China out, what GW nonsense is that, they don’t give a rats for help from any white western nation, and think us fools.

The last photo with the iphone is indicative of the moral compass of these ladies.

        • Riddler

          Must be from Quebec.

        • iLL

lol..wtf is this going off on Canadians. Someone is bitter.

      • Showing off is not a good thing, in any sense. Hate with always come with it, and one thing the bible was right about is that Vanity is a sin, a punishable one which doesn’t need the church backing it up. (bible didnt say the last thing, I did)

        • Rick in China

The vanity of others offends our taste only when it offends our vanity.

          • Riddler

That is a quote by: Francois de La Rochefoucauld

          • Riddler

He also said this: Virtue would go far if vanity did not keep it company.

          • Thee who is free of sin shall cast the first stone… just translated it from the spanish version, dunno how it goes in english.

          • Rick in China

I don’t get what that has to do with anything above? And “vanity is a sin” implies we’re all Christians. Christians have sins, I don’t have “sin”, except those attributed to me by Christians. The girls up there aren’t showing off or showing “vanity” anyways, they’re not dressed extravagant and for the most part I’m very surprised it’s not more extravagant, I’ve seen girls dressed up more to go shopping at random_street_in_any_random_city_in_China.

Sinful eh….oh my, almost as sinful as newton – him and all his “I am very sinful, I once ate an apple in church.” Oh My!

          • lol you make it sound funny, I give you that.

yeah I’ve seen then more dressed up just to go to the park, even “luxury hiking”

          • Probotector

“Yet he who is without sin cast the first stone”

            There you go.

          • Thanks mate

          • Paul Schoe

            Rick, thanks for this one.
It stopped my mouse running through the comments

Riddler: thanks for the follow-up. I love the Virtue quote.

    • Riddler

      Or an observation of decadence?

  • mr.wiener

Well someone had to mention the Summer palace being burnt down.
Apparently skimpily dressed looks good with a dead animal draped over it.

    • Probotector

I know right, talk about insecurity. It’s like if whenever Obama makes a speech from the white house lawn, the media goes, “we must remember that this residence on Pennsylvania Avenue was ransacked and burned down in 1812”.

      • You make fair points. It would be like David Cameron or every british person remembering this:

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Tea_Party

And then when visiting Boston, Cameron or say another minister saying something like: “We must remember all the tea that was dumped here in 1773”

Western countries seem to be able to leave things in the past, a lesson that could be learned.

  • bprichard

Those outfits don’t look particularly scandalous. Too much fur, though. Makes me want to get out my trusty red paint bucket.

  • KAMIKAZIPILOT

Well judging from the pictures, rich and important people’s offspring definitely aren’t better looking than their poorer, less important fellow citizens.

  • MrC

I would also like to hold a cumming of age ceremony for these fine girls.
    but why wait!

  • xuedi

they kind of look ugly, and looking at their growing up circumstances i am pretty sure they developed a ugly character as well … i really hope they don’t become poor one day, then that have nothing …

    • 二奶头发

these students know how to spend money BUT do they know how to make money?

      • TheSOP

When you suck the blood of the masses because you countries political/economic system is based on hereditary cronyism I think they are set.

    • Repatriated

Along with the materialism comes the “attitude”. Sadly.

  • 用开水烫我!

i think sometimes people are too nosy…
who cares what they wear let alone what they should wear, as long as kids are happy!
look at what western girls wear for this type of parties, then chinese will feel much better.
young girls like to wear mature to feel like a real woman already, after some age, you want to wear young but no chance already…
    funny!

    • Jahar

For parties like this in the west, young women will usually dress in an elegant and classy manner… I don’t know what you are talking about.

      • Zappa Frank

she’s never been out of china but pretend to be an expert of western habits and people.

        • MrC

she been with a lot of white trash so she pretty clued up now.
          or not.

        • TheSOP

That is a common trend among many Chinese, lecturing foreigners about how they cannot understand Chinese culture, society etc but then feigning great knowledge of the “West” what ever that is, all with out ever having been out of the country or speaking any Western language at more than a rudimentary level.

      • 用开水烫我!

not about cheap or expensive, kids have no much sense at fashion,ok?
to be frank, when i saw those white girls wear evening dress for their ceremony,i do not see anything great either.sigh, these fat and big white girls, speechless!

        • Zappa Frank

what r u talking about? have u ever at least be out of china to see any of those cerimonies? or just tv? chinesegirls with they enormous and everstanding 痘痘are any better? besides even in china there are more and more fat girls

          • MrC

yea the Chinese government needs to step in here, Chinese girls are getting fatter and lazier and god dam ugly with it and foul mouthed. Its getting really disgusting.
I’m think i should immigrate North Korea but no idea what the stocks are like there.

          • Probotector

            Fat chicks are all right.

          • Riddler

Depends. Big girls or fat girls. If it is pathological weight then NO!

But big girls? Naturally big? That is lion matarial:-)

          • Probotector

Well I am bored with looking at skinny wretch Chinese women whose thighs are thinner than my forearms.

          • Riddler

‘skinny wretch’ havent heard that for years hahaha…

          • KAMIKAZIPILOT

Well if it’s big girls you like you don’t get much bigger than Samoan women. Their thighs are bigger than your waist, or at least my waist. They could also probably bench press you.

          • MrC

yea at eating and being lazy.

        • Riddler

You will not find any male from china who would rather be with a local instead of this ‘fat and big white girl’.

There will also be no reply from any male from china for the next 30 seconds. Don’t ask why.

Just take a look at her, then look in the mirror. Keep the bucket close by when you carry out my second instruction.

          • Stefan Xu

I would rather be with a Chinese girl this girl. I am not attracted to this girl what’s so ever, everyone’s taste are different.

          • KAMIKAZIPILOT

I wouldn’t want to be a very attractive woman. If I had to be a woman I’d want to be average in looks. Being too attractive has too many downsides as a woman. I’d never want to be a Chinese girl, their lives are too difficult.

          • Riddler

Their lives may be difficult, but they would make yours hell.

          • maybeabanana
          • Riddler

But this won’t work in china. You need the ‘rich’ option.

          • maybeabanana

Eh? The guys are picking girls base on the ‘rich’ option? I thought that was a girl thing.

          • Riddler

            Remember that Bentley incident? :-)

          • maybeabanana

My take was that guy was too stupid to be that shrew. He sold his soul!

          • Riddler

Or is is gay and so is father in law. He sold his soul, maybe his ass, definitely his ass one way or another.

          • maybeabanana

Think how messed up that assumption would be for this ‘family’.

          • Riddler

Yeah, imagine the silence around the big happy family dinner table.

          • 用开水烫我!

            your right,hahaha!
in fact,in china,as long as a girl has a good job in gov or has a rich family, she can always get married. no matter how ugly.
but good looking girls, even they are nice, still not easy to find a good husband.
snob dog, open your eyes read well,do not write to me again!(this part is not for you)

          • KAMIKAZIPILOT

Easy, I’ll take good looking and emotionally stable. I can’t be with a woman who I’m not physically attracted to and I can’t stand emotional wrecks. I can do without the intelligence. Besides I think it’s the easiest to increase the intelligence of someone versus making them better looking or more emotionally stable.

          • mr.wiener

            Couldn’t I have a little of each?

          • maybeabanana

That’ll be too idealistic, would it not?

          • 用开水烫我!

            i have two,lacking one :stable!
i feel sad for this too…
partly also because that mfker once recall what happened,my angry grows bigger and bigger.when i am with others,i can not keep calm either.

          • linette lee

Most people don’t mind having no intelligent, because the ones without intelligent don’t know that they don’t have intelligent. Ignorance is bliss. I will take good looking and emotionally stable/happy over intelligent for myself. And Intelligent and emotionally stable/happy for my man. Thank you.

          • Probotector

So your personal ad would read:

“Proud to be stupid and doesn’t mind ugly guys.”

          • linette lee

            hahaha…..lol….XD

Let my man have all the intelligent. Let him have all the worries and stress. I am proud to be ignorant and stupid….lol…XD

          • Riddler

Why? Afraid of girls like this? Insecure are we? Let me tell you a few things about girls like this. They have big expectations. In bed they want a lion of a man, they don’t just lie down, spread and scream, they are pro-active, they expect at least a few hours of serious cruising. They judge the mood carefully, and provide a different type of cruise almost every time. No, they don’t wait at the door handing you a glass of milk when you return from work, all the while gazing adoringly in your eyes like girls in chinese commercials. This girl would take the initiative and…maybe I should stop. You say you don’t like these kinds of girls simply because you can’t get one. Unless you find one for payment and even then, you will never find out what she is really like because you are paying for it.

We western guys on the other hand, have had plenty of both and believe me when i tell you, there is no comparison to be made.

Oh and aside from all the cruising? These girls are fun, witty, have something interesting to say other than whining for the latest iPhone. They are clean, smell nice because they wash themselves daily.

Think on this next time you are at your local massage place getting some filthy girl who will always fail to stimulate your ego among other things.

          • Stefan Xu

I want my girl to be like a girl. A feminine girl who stays home taking care of the kids while I work. Asian girl are more feminine than western girls. If western women aren’t able to give me a glass of milk then what are they supposed to do at home? Sitting on the couch watching TV while getting fat? I don’t mean that a girl should be a man’s servant, a woman should just be a traditional woman. A man is already the family’s biggest or only breadwinner so the woman can at least do something.

And about the sexy things, I have low sex drive. I am not that sex-hungry guy.

          • mr.wiener

Eat more red meat and less tofu.
Were it up to me I’d have you on the “rugby ,stout and oysters” regime.

          • Probotector

            Sexist

          • moody

From what i read, you’d be better off with a maid.
she’d clean your shit, won’t talk to you and you would not even need to sex her up.
            Paradise ?
            …..
Living a life like that surely is dull

          • TheSOP

You need to get yourself some testo gel seriously!

          • hess

good luck finding one like that in Sweden, sexist turd

          • Stefan Xu

My girlfriend is Chinese, and she points that men and women are different and they have different roles. Chinese women actually wants to become a housewife if they can afford it. It’s status right now in China to be a housewife since it shows that your husband earns so much you don’t need to work.

The feminism in Sweden have gone overboard, men should be house-daddies while the women works, that’s weird I am sure most Asians would agree with me.

          • linette lee

I agree with you that most women want to HAVE THE OPTION to become a housewife if they can afford it. Most women want to have the option to either be stay home mom or a career woman. That means it is best when a woman has a choice like “I can stay home if I want to to take care of kids and become a full time mom, or I can hire a nanny to take care of my kids for me because I don’t want to give up my career. Either way my husband makes enough money for me to do whatever I want.” Now that’s a comfortable life for most women after marriages. That is the kind of life that is perfect for me after marriage.
The saddest thing for women is that they can’t afford to be stay home moms because they can’t afford to even if they want to.

          • Kate

I don’t understand how anyone would want to brag about their husbands expecting nothing from them except for them to spread open their legs and pop out babies. It’s basically like they don’t think you’re capable of doing anything that’s productive.
Even though my parents grew up in China, I’m glad they never raised me to be that type of girl. If anything they always told me to be the opposite. To make something of myself rather than depend on someone else.

          • whuddyasack

I don’t think he’s necessarily afraid of girls like that. People’s tastes in men and women are different, what’s hot for some, isn’t so hot for others.

It’s undeniable that physical appearance-wise, East Asians have a certain delicate, feminine charm about them and put them next to your average western girl, it makes the western girl look manly and imposing. I can’t even begin to imagine how one-sided it will look if both groups are to compete in physical activities. It’s amazing Easterners are doing so well.

For the record, just by browsing the internet, I honestly think most people have a higher opinion of the average Japanese model than that girl you posted. Not just in East Asian or S.E. Asian countries but even in western ones. I won’t state my own preferences of course ;-)

In terms of character, some men prefer girls that can emotionally support them at their darkest hour. Some men prefer a gentle, soft-spoken voice and soothing words to grating, ugly threats. Some even prefer childish playfulness and giggling to harsh language, swearing and yelling. I think that’s what Xu was trying to convey and for some, this is very sympathetic stuff.

          • Riddler

Western girls only appear manly and imposing for pussy men. How is this lady manly and imposing? How? Anyone who finds this imposing is either a pedo or dickless.

          • Kate

to be fair, she’s asian since India is in Asia….lol but I get what you’re trying to say

          • Probotector

            Hey, welcome back!

          • Kate

I think you have the wrong person. This is my first time posting

          • Probotector

To be fair though, to the Chinese, she’s still a loawai.

          • Kate

Can someone explain to me the hate that seems to be going on on this site? Like the whole west vs chinese? I’m ethnically Chinese but grew up in the states and in a predominately white area so maybe I’m not “asian” enough? but do people in china really discriminate that much? I haven’t been back since I was a little kid

          • 二奶头发

Get a weibo account (if you can read chinese) and see what chinese people think and read their ideas and draw up your own conclusions. Because only a small amount of chinese stories/trends are translated on this site.

This site’s forums have lots of non-chinese (waiguoren) that live in china or have lived in china. They tend to express their opinions on chinese news stories based on personal experiences / observations that they had.

          • Kate

I can’t read chinese but I’ve made an account before and used google page translate but for the most part the translations suck and made no sense.

          • 二奶头发

Reading the chinese people’s comments put after the news stories on this site are good. the translators do a good job with expressing the chinese poster’s meanings into english.

          • Riddler

I didn’t read this post before i replied to your previous post. I hope it answers this question. I am dealing with my own soul search. This nonsense has to end. Me for my part, apologise for everything i have said negatively regarding china and aim to build postiive vibes with my chinese counterparts here.

Sorry guys, i mean this. Let’s have fun of course, a little needling is great fun but i hope we can move on and make CS a site for reflection and reaching out to each other instead of the hate.

            Peace everyone.

          • Probotector

“but do people in china really discriminate that much?”

            They sure do

          • Riddler

Its not really about origins Kate. I do get drawn into this chinese vs asian thing but in reality, people are people everywhere with their appearances, prejudices, hatreds, admiration or even affection.

I loved everything about China since i was a child in Britain and would never listen to a negative word regarding China. I came here, stayed for years and was sorely dismayed at things I saw.

Having said that, it was in a business meeting, that a Chinese businessman had a real talk with me. He put it succinctly when he said that chinese are like grass. They adjust their views based on who they are speaking with, rarely revealing their thoughts. Like grass in the wind, which bends and sways. Unlike trees, which have strong foundations, rock solid in what they hold to be true and correct, like us from the West. That is what he said. He also told me never to trust anyone in mainland due to their mindset regarding anyone foreign. This gentleman was in his late 50’s. I spent more than 3 hours listening in awe.

He was among the few, true people that china is losing fast. He smiled at the end, when he told me his flight to the USA departs in the morning. He left china for good and told me to be very careful or I will end up disappointed in that the china that i had in mind was a different china and that i was 1,000 years or so too late.

Whenever, and any time I have had any difficulty in china, it is always some young chinese kid who steps up to help. There is hope. I truly believe that the youth of china will restore china to its true position of a center of thought, thinkers, and civilisation. If i didnt believe this, i would have left a long time ago.

          • whuddyasack

As they say, different strokes for different folks. I’m only conveying how some people feel and was talking more about the norm. That girl is definitely the “super model” type so she’s way above average.

Anyways, I think this is what people who like more “feminine” women had in mind. Hazarding a guess here of course.

          • Stefan Xu

She tries to look hot and I guys would think she is hot but I don’t like hot chicks, I like cute and beautiful girls.

          • Kate

aishwarya rai absolutely qualifies as a beautiful girl!

          • Riddler

You have the right to what you prefer Stefan. We all have an image of our preferred partner. I profusely apologise for my previous comments and hope you accept this Sir.

          • Riddler

She isn’t trying to look hot. She is SIZZLING. When you say you have a low sex drive, you need to meet up with this chick. She would show you a world you didn’t know existed.

          • donscarletti

In terms of character, some men prefer girls that can emotionally
support them at their darkest hour. Some men prefer a gentle,
soft-spoken voice and soothing words to grating, ugly threats. Some even
prefer childish playfulness and giggling to harsh language, swearing
            and yelling.

So, basically, what you’re saying is go for the western girl every time.
Chinese girls are all delicate, charming and soft, until you’ve been with them long enough that they simply do not give a shit about your feelings when they inform you, so very bluntly, of the multitude of ways you should improve.

Western women tend to be more emotionally nurturing and retain a little bit of charm, even with familiarity.

          • whuddyasack

You misread me. I wasn’t talking about myself but rather how many who preferred the demure Asian girls felt (stereotype or no stereotype) and it’s not hard to sympathize with them. They are after all, just looking for love.

I haven’t stated my views, but let’s just say if it were by me, I’d see a girl for who she is and would never give her a rating or value. You can’t measure love.

As for the rest of your comments, it sounds more like a generalization of Chinese girls and who’s to say all Asian girls are the same as “some” of those Chinese girls. For the record, I know many who are very patient and gentle wives and moms, who put up with a lot.

I think marriage statistics, stability and satisfaction ratings speak for themselves and how Chinese/Asian girls are like. However, I’d say it’s ridiculous to put all the blame on women. Usually, men can be equally bad if not worse. I always believe in getting what you give.

          • donscarletti

For putting up with a lot, I think you’re right, Chinese women can be quite enduring. I’m not dismissing Chinese or Asian women out of hand, there are many fantastic aspects about them, just I do not think that particular aspect really shines as a positive.

I just think that western cultural values expect women to provide a lot of emotional nurturing to their husband/boyfriend, whereas in China, there is less of that emphasis.

For what it’s worth, I think it works both ways, with male and female. Its just as a heterosexual male, the other side is less relevant to me.

          • whuddyasack

Correct, which is why I mentioned the different strokes for different folks. In fact, some of those points were just listed down for explanation, e.g. third point about the dizzy, forever ditzy, giggling girls. It can be a turn off for some but there are others who dig that. ;-)

I guess you’re right, but I honestly don’t think China is all that different to her neighbors culturally. Politically maybe, but I think some of the values in say Vietnam, Japan, Singapore, etc. are the same. “Traditionally”, most Asian wives are nurturers and faithfully perform house duties and look after their husbands physical AND mental well being while sometimes putting up with their husband’s shenanigans, perhaps violence (though thankfully proven to be much less than White and dark guys) and his sexual escapades. I can agree with you and how tolerating this isn’t a positive and can be viewed as weak, but there’s such a thing as quiet resilience, grace and silent dignity. And this is the uncharted territory of the Asian woman.

As for your final point, I most definitely agree with you. Both parties are equally accountable. I’ve always been a fan of Crowe’s character in L.A. Confidential. However, I learnt from the internet that such men hardly exist if at all and there are some genuinely misogynistic heterosexuals who blame everything on women, claiming to be MRAs (like come on). To me, a real man is one man enough to look at himself through his wife’s eye and people in love work things through. ;-)

          • Riddler

Oh and another thing and on a different note. Since chinese girls are your thang, and since Eattot hates white men or practically every foreigner, let me do something cool:

Stefan Xu meet Eattot, Eattot meet Stefan’s Xu. Hope you both live happily every after. Oh and Eattot, get this bro a Bentley.

Violin plays in the background, the couple make their way into the horizon.

            Suddenly?

“YOU CHEAP FUCKER! YOU NO BUY ME NO TREAT”!

    • Warlock

Shite in one ear, shite in the other. Can we get a bullshyte filter?

    • Middle_Kingdum

You are right. Why can’t they go out for a fun night and dress in fancy clothes? High school girls and boys will wear the same on their prom night.

  • Truth

I know a guy who would really like to get to know these girls if you know what I mean…. *wink wink* ;)

He’s white so it wouldn’t be rape as they’d consent.

    • 用开水烫我!

i know quite some white diggers in shanghai.and i even heard some white loser wishes his chinese parents-in-law die early so that he can get their house early.and this fucker is very ugly and fat,i wonder what kinda woman had courage to have sex with him…omg! girls better have some standard.

      • MrC

yea, i would think you know all the white diggers in Shanghai.
        All the trash yea?

      • mwanafa

What are you tryina say exactly?
        1. You know some white diggers?? Well then congratulations.
2.You heard some white loser… fat??? It seems you keep a very good company of friends.
3.You are wondering what kinda ….with him??? Curiosity killed the cat.
4.omg! girls better have some standard??? I didn’t know that girls don’t have “some” standard.
What I see here is an angry fag who tried to cop with the white but didn’t fit in.

      • Riddler

You seem to have intimate details about this person. What happened exactly? Come on you should share this so you can get over it.

You been bar crawling? Got tossed around a little and now are annoyed because no one would marry you, provide you with an exit from a miserable existence?

      • Truth

        “I know” – No you don’t
“I heard” – very reputable source I imagine
        “I wonder” – no likely
“girls better have some standard” – Chinese girls have one standard, white is best!!

      • Elijah

And so the scorned gold-digger professes the grapes to be sour before squatting down and befouling the area with excrement as a finally act of pseudo-dominance.

Join us next week as we delve into to the sad and devious world of the “Over-30 Gold-Digger”. This is Sir Elijah Attenborough signing off, good night.

        • 用开水烫我!

i would dig your fat pig face with a gear, then make you into sausage then feed to germandude.

          • Truth

You are an angry leftover-woman? xD

          • Elijah

Well @germandude, I hope you like Elijah sausage. Real Canadian man meat. Mmmmmm…

Eattot the Retard almost made sense, this is progress.

      • Middle_Kingdum

Why do you not like white people, eattot?

      • Riddler

Did they dig deep with you?

    • MrC

      you”re not wong!

  • Alphy

It’s quite modest compare to some prom dress up if you ask me. Oh heck, go to any high school during summer in the US and you probably see more skin than that.

    • Riddler

True, but at least skin that doesn’t make you recoil in horror. Come on face it, most western girls have the curves in the right places, neither are they bow legged nor walk with low slung rear ends.

  • Angie Mac

You gotta feel bad for the one girl that actually did come dressed in traditional clothes. Awkward!

    • vincent_t

being different is hard, but in this case she earn my respect

    • David

I was just thinking most of the audience probably thought it was great but she was wishing to look like the other girls.

      • Angie Mac

        Kinda reminds me of Carrie.

    • TheSOP

She should worn a komono, at least those have some style… or get that
“traditional” potato sack fitted and tailored properly.

    • Ana Belen Ruiz

      she’s a heroine! lol

I think commenters are too judgemental. Of course hanfu would have been better to wear, but these girls look pretty good too.

  • 用开水烫我!

i wish chinese can wear hanfu together,i always dream to wear like ancient! then i will spend good money to make one set for me.
    hahaha!

    • David

I have seen many Kimonos in Japan, Hanbok in Korea and even a Qipao here in China but never seen a girl wear a Hanfu in person. I assume they are very expensive?

      • 用开水烫我!

not about the price,if nobody wears it,it would be too strange and a waste.also i am miss picky…if i make one,i want handmade…
i like hanfu because it’s not messy and colorful, white inside, red outside then sew something with golden or black thread on the edge.
i can tell you that even a handmade vest in village minority cost around 1000 to 2000.

        • Riddler

Sew something with golden or black? How about a noose?

        • Riddler

The difference between you and those of your ilk is not that you aim too high and miss it, but you aim too low and reach it.

    • Nessquick Choco

it should be cheap here, isn’t ?

    • TheSOP

      Kimono is nicer/more beautiful.

  • Tiago

lol you people consider this dressing slutty ? clearly you have never been to america

    • YourSupremeCommander

Where clear stripper high heels and silicone boob jobs are mandatory.

    • Riddler

Clearly you have never been to china.

      • Tiago

why would i want to ?

        • Riddler

Very valid point. I retract my comment.

  • David Stern

Most of the girls are dressed modestly and nicely, only a few a bit over the top with the fur stuff.

    • Zappa Frank

yes, just some gilrs wear prostitutes clothes, but most are ok. Maybe for me still too much chinese-style not very elegant a bit kitch, but ok.

      • Riddler

‘bit kitch’ bit of a tongue twister there, very soon starts to sound like a ‘kit….’

      • Elegance comes with context, I believe. When I was in China I looked at them as if I was in a bizarre place, of course, because the wealth gap is way to big not to see it that way.

Chinese girls are the only ones I’ve seen wearing expensive dresses and shoes just to go take a walk in the park and you know, where I am from, chicks go to the park in shorts and small t shirts and they don’t need make up to look as hot as they do.

(note: I miss seeing all those tiny shorts in Summer, and middle class Chinese girls are by far sexier than those super rich ones, of course there are exceptions)

    • Repatriated

Is this a Chinese equivalent of a Prom? Except the girls are dateless…and walk around outside in the dirt instead of getting in a Limo and going out to get drunk?

      • Riddler

Is that dateless as in they don’t have a date or no one unless bereft of his senses would date them?

      • linette lee

yeah…isn’t it like a prom or something.

  • Probotector

Yeah, they look like prostitutes and are dressed too skimpily, but not unlike your average Chinese chick donning platform stripper heels or thigh boots, hot pants and too much make up.

    • MrC

I always though prostitutes dressed like these girls.
      Think about it…

      • Riddler

Feel sorry for genuine prostitutes in china. They are just so difficult to pick out from the crowd.

        • MrC

and when its so readily available for free its a tough game to be into.

          • Riddler

The difference is this-local guys have to get ferraris, lambos, BENTLEYS, and throw around a lot of cash at some bar or cafe to get laid.

Foreign guys just have to go in and sit down. I mean foreign, that includes ethnic chinese guys.

          • Cauffiel

You mean racially chinese, ethnically western?

          • Riddler

No I mean ethnically chinese but of a different nationality. For example, someone born in america, britain, europe (i would like to exclude france at this point) but of chinese origin.

          • Zappa Frank

isn’t it citizenship? nationality is not something you get simply borning in a country.

          • Riddler

Not sure Frank. I mean if you are born in a western country you are of that nationality and are a citizen of that country. If you emigrate, you may get citizenship after a period of time in some countries and by default become a national. Ethnicity on the other hand doesn’t change. So chinese born in taiwan for example are ethnically chinese but not citizens nor nationals of china.

Not too sure on this one as nationality and citizenship are legal areas which vary according to which country one is born in i guess. I don’t know if a baby born to foreign parents in china would get either.

          • Zappa Frank

In Europe usually nationality doesn’t have any legal issue and it’s almost synonim of ethinc group, but can be different in case of adoption or many generation abroad. I mean if we take chinese, a chinese just 2nd generation will likely speak chinese as first language, will recognize himeself in chinese history and traditions… but after n generation even if ethnicaly chinese he will likely recognize himself in the history and culture of his country and not in the chinese one.
However nationality for other countries has a legal issue and is a sort of minor citizenship, where basically you cannot vote, but it changes by countries.

          • Riddler

Weakest army of both WW? Try France for that slot. You must have tried that google search for ‘french military victories’? If not try it, click on ‘i’m feeling lucky’ and you will laugh. Apparently, the american dude who put it up gets death threats.

          • whuddyasack

            Frank,
Italy wasn’t the weakest army of both WWs, you’re far too critical of your nation. The point was I’m sure most Italians did what they had to do to survive and were threatened on both fronts. Whenever, there’s a war, neighbors unfortunately are dragged in and forced to take sides for better or worse. Also, being terribly outnumbered doesn’t help.

          • Cauffiel

What you are referring to as nationality is ethnicity.

          • Riddler

            Oxford Dictionary & Webster

Denoting origin by birth or descent rather than by present nationality:ethnic Indian populations

Nationality: specifically : a legal relationship involving allegiance on the part of an individual and usually protection on the part of the stateb : membership in a particular nation

            Citizenship:

            She applied for Polish citizenship.
            He was granted U.S. citizenship.
The students are learning the value of good citizenship.

The status of being a citizen

Membership in a community (as a college)b : the quality of an individual’s response to membership in a community

Don’t get me wrong, I am just trying to get to the bottom of this much discussed topic.

          • Cauffiel

You’re not getting to the bottom of anything because the only thing I commented on was ethnicity, and you keep repeating nationality nationality nationality.

Ethnicity has everything to do with your cultural background, not the shape of your eyes or color of you hair.

“Racially” is an adverb. Adverbs describe verbs and adjectives. When one says “racially Chinese,” ‘racially’ is an adverb, and ‘Chinese’ is an adjective.

          • Probotector

            true

          • Cauffiel

Yeah, but I’m running out of ways to say it that Riddler might understand.

          • Riddler

This is not an argument on my part man, i said that from the beginning, you are one of the intelligent ones around here thats why i said initially that i could not quite get the synonymous nor etymology and the overlaps all thrown in with legal issues. Just trying to reason with ya bro.

          • vincent_t

Really? I always thought ethnicity is the synonym if race tho. And commonly both terms are used to refer to race/skin color.

          • Cauffiel

Yeah, laymen get this one wrong. Ethnicity is strongly correlated with race simply because most people still live in the same culture their ancestors did 1000 years ago, but it is not defined by race. I was unclear until one day, I looked up several sources to see if I could find something consistent, and thats what I found.

If you look up ethnicity in an average dictionary, it’ll mention culture, but not race.

          • Cauffiel

Well, here it is from Wikipedia:

*Ethnicity or ethnic group is a socially defined category of people who identify with each other based on a shared social experience or ancestry.[1] Membership of an ethnic group tends to be associated with and ideologies of shared cultural heritage, ancestry, history, homeland, language or dialect, and with symbolic systems such as religion, mythology and ritual, cuisine, dressing style, physical appearance, etc.*

It does, in fact, mention race and even ancestry. But when considering most other metrics…. ideology, culture, homeland, language, religion, cuisine, dressing style…. these are all dependent on where you’re born, not where grandma’s grandma was born.

In other words, its a way for academicians to talk over your head about things everyone else intuits.

          • Riddler

You make an interesting point here but the distinction is often blurred. Not sure but would someone say ‘I am racially chinese but ethnically taiwanese’- if they were born in Taiwan? Not critising you here, this is genuine.
Or would one say I am ethnically chinese but of Taiwanese nationality? Or does nationality simply confer some kind of legal status?

          • Cauffiel

This is the first you have mentioned nationality. I was only referring to ethnicity, which is made up of your cultural background i.e. where you grew up. So ‘I am racially Chinese but ethnically Taiwanese’ is exactly what someone would say.

          • Stefan Xu

How do Chinese view ethnic Chinese foreigners? Do Chinese girls like them?

How about mixed white/Chinese foreigners then?

          • Riddler

Stefan I think that there will always be some kind of barrier between mainland chinese and ethnic chinese foreigners. Not just china, it happens in many countries where some people were born abroad. Sometimes it works well, in that locals want to get a real picture of what ‘abroad’ is like from someone they can understand.

Mixed chinese/white/black/latin. I think they have a hard time generally. Never really accepted by anyone. But free from nationalistic fervour.

          • Chinese girls should only be for western men, and yes you are right, they should not even have to pay 1 rmb on a date, and never buy a car or house for any wife.

    • Repatriated

Haha. I used to joke with my wife about that when we were out in China. It wasn’t until we got back to the states that she understood…as very few women actually wear really high heels, especially with casual shorts/skirts…while just out and about doing day to day stuffs.

      • maybeabanana

Because they are actually painful and it’s call dinner heels where you wear them during dinner but not walking around. Oh the pain for vanity.

  • 二奶头发

I guess one could look at this as a chinese high school prom. or some weird sweet 16 party LOL

    • maybeabanana

Damn right proms are full of tacky dresses.

  • YourSupremeCommander

Wonder how many of them girls get knocked up right after they leave the ceremony.

    • Riddler

Depends, what do you say we gate crash the party and make sure of that.

      • YourSupremeCommander

Na, I have higher standards than you, I don’t do butterfaces.

        • Riddler

What, you do butter asses? Where’s jin?

          • YourSupremeCommander

            who’s jin?

          • Riddler

Trust me you don’t want to know if you dont know.

  • Cauffiel

Netizen comments are the best I think I’ve seen. The girls are surprisingly unfortunate looking, though.

    • Riddler

      hahaha, ‘unfortunate looking’!

    • slob

      “Unfortunate looking”…

  • 用开水烫我!

if i were 18,i would choose to dress clothes from Five Plus for this type of party.also a pair of pink or red high heels. haha!
i go to five plus often, when look at these lovely skirt my mood gets much better, though i know it’s not for me any more.

    • MrC

      instead of 20 stone?

    • Riddler

Five Plus? Is that for girls just over 5 years of age? Now everything about you begins to make sense. Wishing you were 18 huh?

  • Q Ball

This news isnt as important as the song I love CHinese Foood by ALison Gold.

  • Watanabe

Coming of age ceremony? Another Chinese ripoff of Japan. Chinese may try their best to be like Japanese, but the more they try, the more laughable it gets.

R.I.P. biggj. I assume you’ve moved on to greener pastures.

Can you find even ONE girl in these pics who is out of the ‘aaaaarrrrggghhhhh!!!!!’ category?

      12 physically, 5 mentally.

      • Stefan Xu

        no, they actually look 18…

  • Maddy

So just because they all weren’t wearing traditional clothes they look like prostitutes? The butthurt of Chinese people! Stay pressed~

    • TheSOP

I think the mini-skirts dont help… not that classy for a formal event.

  • YourSupremeCommander

The only one worth my while is the pretty one… the one not in these photos.

  • TheSOP

Japanese girls running around in their komonos on coming of age day, now there was class and style. Beautiful garments and so colorful. This? Meh, Jersey Shore China Edition.

    • TheSOP

I take Jersey shore back, its not at that level, its just a bad amalgamation of dated Japanese and Korean fashions, the furs being particularly atrocious.

    • lmao I wonder which one is snooki

      • TheSOP

I dunno but I think I see a nose job or 3! Honestly Americans and Chinese can compete pretty evenly on being unclassy in a lot of ways… But at least Chinese girls maintain a dainty figure past high school lol, dont want to go to my high school reunion!

  • TheSOP

Japanese do coming of age much more classy with their komonos, it would have been cool if there was a girl in the crowd with the independent fashion mind to wear one. In fact I think cS had a story some years ago about a Chinese girl who did wear a kimono some years ago in a similar even and almost got bashed by brain dead Chinese nationalists (and this was before the whole Senkaku thing creeped up). Chinese have just as much to learn from their fellow Asians as they do from the West, but they really do need to study both because modern Chinese (mainland) society is a disaster.

    • whuddyasack

Yeah, “years” ago. Checked up the article and it was mainly a mother x daughter pair and like 10 others. Sure, Chinese can learn from fellow Asians, there’s never been disagreement there and the comments even back then supported this. Poll results were disappointing but it was mainly 50-50.

As an aside, at least the Chinese have a coming-of-age ceremony. Do White Americans have anything remotely similar? Seriously lol

  • “How outrageous” some might say, just accept the fact that now you are a capitalist nation. Hence the shallowness and superficiality. It’s on.

From another point of view there’s nothing truly great about all this, just a bunch of girls with no ass and no tits showing off how they’ve filled their bras

  • Now that I think about it, there’s nothing strange about this.

These are peasants sons and daughters and their behavior is quite obvious, you could tell where they learned it.

A million of these are worth only one Tony Montana lol

    • Riddler

Oh oh oh, you just brought Tony into this? Imagine him mingling in that crowd? I mean just imagine…

  • Finally one thing where Chinese admit Japan is better.

  • watanabe

Why are Chinese so desperate to be like the Japanese? China always copy and copy everybody. Pretty soon Chinese will start changing their spoken language to sound more like Japanese.

    • YourSupremeCommander

The only thing the Chinese will not copy is the NUKE mutations that’s happening right now, right Shinobi?

  • Guest

all the china vs. japan comments on here. sigh no wonder the west is ahead they’ve united along time ago. you dumbasses are still bickering

  • Tee Kei

all the china vs. japan comments on here. sigh no wonder the west is ahead they’ve united along time ago. you dumbasses are still bickering. However, this is pretty stupid…….

  • mormollio

Everybody should stop comparing them to the japanese, because on japanese coming off age ceremony many girls decided to wear their kimonos prostitute style…it looked great, but the netizens pretty much said the same things as the ones above.

    • whuddyasack

Well said. Why is that those with the best points talk least and those that boast of “educating” others make it a point to have their voice wired into your brain.

Though to be fair, the Chinese netizens did bring the comparison first. Understandable because both countries have a coming-of-age ceremony as part of their culture.

Anyways, the point is some Japanese netizens themselves criticized their own girls this year and presumably every year for dressing in oiran fashion furisode (It’s in japancrush which is like a click away). Such conservatism seems universal unfortunately.

  • maybeabanana

Meh it has lost its meaning and more like a time to dress up kind of like halloween for girls but tamer. Who says these girls are all bad? The girl in black with a pink gold necklace looks pretty good to me as well as the profile view of the girl in the last photo.

    • Riddler

That’s what i thought, but then i envisaged her as soon as she opens her mouth.

      • maybeabanana

        LOL… that’s a mouthful of assumptions though.

        • Riddler

Now that shit sounds kinky, mouthfuls…

    • Repatriated

Those were the only 2 out of the bunch I thought were kinda cute. That “avon” necklace is pretty bad though.

      • Riddler

        Fake Avon necklace.

        • maybeabanana

Hey, you never know if it was really gold from Parie… fake real .. fake real…their imitation production is so skilled…no body cares anymore since they have diluted the brands.

          • Riddler

True, it could be the previous season stuff that didn’t sell in europe so they shipped out old stock to shaghai as with most brand name products as is normal practice. Locals here are all like ‘yeah, we got the latest shit’.

But then you are probably right, they got the fake real shit.

          • Repatriated

Regardless…the necklace looks kinda off with the black dress. It looks more like something a girl wearing jeans and a low neck t-shirt would wear.

          • Riddler

            Fashion over style.

  • Rat

The girl in the second last photo in the traditional dress is very pretty!

  • Dumbledore

I believe the netizens have more important things to criticize. Only a few of these girls wear short skirts, and even then it’s nothing compared to the sluttiness you see every time you walk out the door. This is just envy and class combat as is common online these days in China. Considered how hard these kids have worked during their Six Years In Hell, I’m prepared to cut them a lot of slack, but yeah, if you’re a middle school drop out spending 15 hours a day in a net cafe, I guess you might be a bit jealous.

  • moop

i guess being the child of wealthy elites still can’t buy fashion sense, half that shit wouldnt even be bought at a goodwill back in the states

  • beauty and sophistication.

  • linette lee

But Isn’t majority of the China officials descendants of Mao’s party members. Those are the low class peasants who killed all the scholars and wealthy families from the old time. Those China officials must be pretty ugly and not book smart. With that kind of genetic how good can their children be?

    • linette lee

      http://cdn.theatlanticwire.com/img/upload/2011/07/fake-china-photo-1/large.jpg

They are children from these china officials. What do you expect? And the type of women that would marry them are probably plastic women with low education. EVen with a college degree they probably bought it. lol.
So it’s just a combination of bad genes. You are not going to get fan bing bing or wang lee hom. Natural beauties with intelligent.

Maybe these china officials should stop breeding. The rich powerful china gov’t folks should breed less. lol. To help China. lol.

  • olrik

How are they dressed as “prostitutes”? Should they be dressed in Chairman Mao’s baggy green outfit? Are you people really that stupid?

    • Probotector

      in China…

  • Alice Pan

lol all in ya feelings bcs they are stuntin on hoes
espcs homegirl in the white dress #werq
lol even got dudes carrying they purse & shit

    • moop

huh? what the hell did you just type? can anyone else comprehend this babble?

      • Alice Pan

        qt colonial classism

        • TheSOP

ah college freshgirl took a diversity class, thats cute

      • B*tches, Leave

Translation: “It’s amusing that all of you are feeling this way, because they dress like prostitutes, e.g. the lady in white dress. It is also laughable that their male escorts are carrying their purses and feces”

        • Alice Pan

nope not quite but you made me laugh lol

    • Claude

I think she’s all urban and shit, you know what I’m sayin?

  • alex

Chinese are so conservative to have these comments! It’s no wonder it is so easy to get tons of free sex and blowjobs from Chinese female students in the UK. Their men are so repressive and bad performers in bed!

  • JesusFuckingChrist

If they think those girls are dressed like hookers, wait til they see what American girls wear for prom dresses.

  • B*tches, Leave

I don’t know, man, I don’t see anything wrong in their dresses … maybe it’s because I’ve seen much worse or maybe because them dresses look boring on flat bodies?

  • lonetrey / Dan

Chinese netizens and their conservative opinions
never fails to surprise me sometimes.

The clothing shown isn’t skimpy or “too-revealing”,
it’s more “fancy” or “too-over-the-top” if anything.
