Huge Taiwanese Grapes… and an Apple for Comparison

Lee Kaifu posts on Sina Weibo an image of "large" Taiwanese grapes, with an apple next to it for comparison.

Lee Kaifu posts on Sina Weibo an image of "large" Taiwanese grapes, with an apple next to it for comparison.

Just for fun… The following microblog post was one of the most reshared and commented on China’s popular Sina Weibo microblogging service yesterday. It is by Lee Kai-fu, one of the most well known internet figures in China, and perhaps better known as the founding president of Google China until he resigned from the company in 2009.

@李开复: Taiwan’s super large grapes (beside them is an apple). [吃惊] [referring to above image]

Comments on Sina Weibo:

Looks really tasty.

Now that’s a small apple.

Kai Fu brother, why are you always like taking other fruits and comparing them to apples?

Taiwan’s apples are too small.

Small apple?

Small apple~

Could it be genetic modification?

You should be holding them with your hands, and the effect will be even more obvious.

So cute.

Not plums?

It’s obviously an extremely small “apple”.

Big is not necessarily good, fruit naturally grown is enough.

So big I wouldn’t even dare to eat it anymore →_→

Could there still be people who don’t believe it’s the apple that is small?

Why are you always comparing with apples?

Are your marketing Taiwanese fruits?

How much per half-kilogram?

Where did you find such a small apple?

Yet another genetically modified food!!

Then would that be an extremely small apple from the Mainland? [吃惊]

Everyone come and look at an extremely small apple (beside it are some grapes).

Teacher Lee, are you sure it isn’t the apple that is too small?

Probably genetically modified, which isn’t a good thing.

Makes me think of golden rice.

[Note: A little while ago, there was some controversy on the Chinese internet and media about American researchers testing the genetically modified rice on Chinese children without the Chinese side’s knowledge.]

This are plums, right…?

Mr. Lee definitely has a problem with apples. The apples express dissatisfaction.

The dragonfruit you just posted isn’t considered big, but these grapes really are huge.

That poor apple, being used multiple times for comparison.

Old Lee, you brought this apple over from the mainland, right? Why are you always using this apple for comparisons? Haha.

Taiwan’s agricultural technology is still comparatively more advanced [than the mainland].

Are the grape seeds larger than normal?? I care more about this, haha…

Uncle Kai-fu, seems like you have something against this apple…haha

Steve Jobs is unhappy with such a small Taiwanese apple, hires a factory to research and develop a large Apple.

What do you think? Large grapes? Small apple? Plums? Photoshop? Genetically modified? And why is Lee Kai-fu always comparing things to apples?

Apples too small or grapes too big ~~ hmm ….. or they could be plums ~~

    • Brett

Not plums, they really are grapes. Always a chance that the apple is small, but you can grow a giant anything with the right care… though I’m actually surprised that the grape skins havent split.

There are festivals all around the world where people show off their giant crops.

  • Rainer

Kommissar Hilary would sure lecture us the grapes are fruit of democracy while the small apple is from commie China.

    • elizabeth

That would probably be a lecture on sour grapes.

  • Nick in Beijing

Definitely a slow day on the microblogs…

  • elizabeth

Now even fruits are overdosed with steroids. What will they think of next to make more money?

    • jeffli

Exploding watermelons….Oh they did that already? haha!

      • elizabeth

Haha, looks like I’m a little behind time.

  • ThinkBlue

China is going through a huge leadership transition and there’s no news on the internet? Big surprise there.

    • MrT

Just think of the billions they saved by not making is a reality TV show.

    • elizabeth

That might be because it’s considered effectively a non-event as far as political reform is concerned.

      • Sean Kung

Maybe they don’t want this site to be too political. This site is NOT blocked in China, which means they must have been obeying the rule.
And I do not like to see Taiwan on ChINAsmack.

        • Alphy

It is not blocked, but extremely slow in China. I am located in Shanghai and I have to turn on VPN to get the site to load up all the way.

          • elizabeth

It’s the Google ads and Disqus loading very slowly.

    • themig

on a related note this yanqui bastard is gone from influencing the ROC Taiwan’s military policy forever!

    • Brett

Exactly, there is no news on the internet. Google and Baidu have supposedly been on lockdown. Im sure the government is monitoring closely and stifling any chatter about the transition.

      • mr.wiener

        How’s your girls mate?

        • mr.wiener

          *how are* typo sorry.

          • jeffli

howz ya shielas mate? but if referring to children,, Howz ya brats mate?

          • mr.wiener

Don’t come the raw prawn with me sport or I’ll show yez what ter do with the wrong end of a pineapple!
Ah, Bazzer McKenzie. We miss your wit and style.

        • Brett

They’re awesome, thanks for keeping us in mind. Come over to koreaBANG in the next couple days and I’ll post some pictures for you… too many haters here…

    • Serpico

Do you really expect serious news on this site? Come on. (:

  • MrT

Should of showed them next to the oversize apples…

  • Harry

Why isn’t there a separate Taiwan site here? I mean if you go between China and Taiwan you realize how different the two countries are and how sh*tty China really is.

  • CM

If you google “globe grape” and “lady apple”, the picture would make sense without the conspiracy theories.

  • donkeykong

Seems like large grapes and a small apple. Not newsworthy.

Not sure if it is big grapes or small apple.

  • Zappa Frank

the apple may be small, but that grape is horrible.. barely look like grape…,

    • mr.wiener

I’ve tried those grapes, the skin comes off in your mouth and tastes nasty and sour. The flesh is kinda tasteless and there are big seeds inside.
      Not my favorite grape.

  • Irvin

Looks like a photo illusion, the grape is closer to the camera than the apple making it seems like it’s bigger but it’s actually not.

  • Guest

Xi Jinping! Change we can believe in!

  • Serpico

I would use knife and fork to eat that. :O

  • Monger

These grapes are actually legitimate. The fruit in Taiwan is really the best in the world. But they import apples from New Zealand. But only the best of them, the fuckoff huge ones

  • linette lee

Are these grapes genetically engineered? So huge.

Taiwan do genetically engineered pet fish too. Blood parrot cichlid, these pet fish are created by Taiwan. They come in bright red, orange, or yellow. The size of your palm. They are calm and friendly fresh water fishes.

  • dim mak

    This is some boring article

  • A Gawd Dang Mongolian

I find bigger isn’t always better. I’ve had large strawberries that always taste sour, whereas smaller strawberries taste like…well, strawberries!

    • grovesman

“I find bigger isn’t always better. ” Ummm…maybe you should ask your gf/wife…heh-heh-heh…

      • A Gawd Dang Mongolian

That’s why I said isn’t always instead of ‘never’

        • grovesman

  • Plum

These are plums, come on. I grew up eating plums. Google them.

  • Cleo

I hate apples. When I was a toddler, Chinese elders would always carefully … peel grapes before feeding them to me. Is that a Chinese thing that I will have to pay forward to toddlers?

  • Hi

We gotta at least give it to him for being the BEST at cheating! Seriously, I mean if he hadn’t gotten caught, he would still be the MICHAEL JORDAN of cycling! I wonder if Michael Jordan ever used drugs to enhance his athletic prowess… But we’ll never know because if he had, he didn’t get caught, so it’s OKAY!? Is this the message what we’re trying to send our kids and future generations? I LOVE white ppl. And quit the sick this six that… Seriously, if that’s SICK WTF is JERRY SANDUSKY? THE DEVIL?!

  • PaulGillett

The apple has clearly been genetically modified to be super small.

  • PixelPulse

The grapes are smaller then the apple, theyre just in a bunch and tower over the small thing. Those grapes are still huge as fuck though.

  • joey

    comparing apples and grapes

  • 3ayo

This weirdly reminds me of a guy I know who can eat an apple in three bites. I thought that was so weird yet fascinating two years ago. Lol.

  • ClitorisMaximus

Same steroids the Chinese Olympic women’s swim team use…?
