Girl who holds umbrella for a disabled beggar during a rainstorm ignites discussion

In the middle of a rainstorm, a thin frail girl held an umbrella for a handicapped old beggar as half of her body became soaked. This scene doesn’t just happen in novels. Recently, a netizen in Suzhou happened to capture such a precious moment with his camera. These photos attracted many netizens, with the number of hits exceeding 24,000, even being promoted to the homepage of XiCi. Netizens have one after another praised the girl as being the most beautiful scene in middle of the rainstorm. According to this Express reporter’s investigations, the very first person to post these photos is Fengniao netizen “金桥tj” who upon recalling the circumstances of the moment said: “After holding the umbrella [for the old beggar] and coming back, I think the girl cried.”

If you know this beautiful girl, please call 96060 or send a private message through Sina Weibo to Modern Express and tell us who she is.

The girl's clothes were already thoroughly soaked.

From NetEase:

Girl completely soaked holding umbrella to shield beggar from the rain

There are a total of 4 photos in this set, and the poster is XiCi netizen “林听海安”. In his post, he wrote: “As a result of a sudden rainstorm, a disabled person struggled helplessly in the rain when a beautiful girl carrying an umbrella rushed into the rainstorm to give concern and care for the disabled person, and even though this umbrella was completely incapable of shielding him, and the girl herself was completely soaked from the rain, she still became the most beautiful scene of the rainstorm.

This reporter saw from the photos that it was raining especially heavy at the time and a beggar with a crippled leg was slowly moving himself on a small wooden cart. Seeing this, a country girl in a pink shirt holding a light purple umbrella in her hand rushed into the rain to hold the umbrella for the beggar. Helpless, the umbrella was completely incapable of shielding against the heavy downpour. In the photos, it can be seen that the umbrella in the girl’s hand was already completely slanted towards the beggar, while her own clothes were already completely drenched from the rainwater.

Should be ding‘d. In this numb society, and even though I don’t do good deeds, I still hope there can be more people like this.

There are still lots of good people, it’s just that sometimes good people are afraid to be good people.

Marry her, there aren’t a lot of this kind of woman left, while women corrupted by money-worship/gold-digging are too many.

If we can remove the possibility of this being someone just putting on a show and it is truly and completely someone with a good heart doing a good deed, then maybe this world is still a very warm place.

For society to still have this kind of beautiful soul, ding this up!

Comments from Sina:

新浪手机用户:

Such a good girl, to marry this kind of wife would be extremely lucky.

新浪feilala:

The girl did a good thing.
However, this clearly is a publicity stunt,
the photos show that they were taken from two completely opposite angles.
The photographer, after taking photos from one side of the street, braving the heavy rain, then runs to the opposite side of the street to take pictures?

新浪chenjianm:

The person taking the photographs, you are truly shameless! Why didn’t you go help the elderly person at the time. For you to notice but not go and help, you are even more shameless than the person in uniform!

新浪ztclr_0ejsz:

Time to yell at people. The photographer is capturing beauty and kindness to share with the world’s people, are we not supposed to say to him “thanks”? When battlefield reporters crawl on the ground taking photos instead of charging forth carrying a gun, can you say he is shameless?

新浪手机用户:

Sigh! People’s thinking these days are too complex. Why is it that the first thing many people think of is that it is a publicity stunt, and not that what they are seeing is a girl holding an umbrella for a disabled beggar!

新浪网友cby228:

No matter what, the girl is kind-hearted. With that many people around who see an elderly person with difficulty moving being soaked by rain without going over to help, its truly quite cold and indifferent. [Examples of] good mentality ought to be promoted.

新浪网友0508858:

Thank you, good girl! What you held up was not an umbrella, but a sliver of hope for all people trapped in a rainstorm, shining a bit of light for a society caught precariously in a raging storm! May all people who are on the lowest level of society caught in the midst of a rainstorm have this kind of umbrella.

Such a small act of kindness can make large waves.

What would be totally normal in most countries is extraordinary in China. What she should have done was actually HELP the beggar move. But that would require actually touching the old man.

      • joebob

Another twisted black heart you have.

Don’t throw pennies and act like a saint, u idiot.

What an old man needs more than someone pushing him like a wagon is some dignity. He doesn’t need to be treated like a retard, and can manage to be mobile on his own.

What he CAN’T do is stop the rain from getting him wet. That’s why the girl knew to do that.

Frankly if I saw you lay one sanctimonious finger on the old man, I would slap you hard.

        • Rick in China

You’re a fucking idiot. The old man obviously DOES need someone to help him get out of the rain – not to run up and start pushing, but to run out and ask if they can help..not just sit and watch him struggle to wheel himself along a slow road to nowhere while getting pissed on without offering assistance.

          • joebob

Ew, another moaner trying way too hard. I feel a little sorry for the Chinese who have to live next door to relentless turnips like you, Rick. :)

You’ll just have to settle for unbunching your panties and rest assure in the fact that the girl with the umbrella was also perfectly capable of recognizing the degree of distress the old man was in AND expressing/soliciting his opinion on how much further assistance he needed without your having to overhear their exchange and interactions.

But I guess if you think if you want to demand proof of everything that transpired, you’re shiat out of luck. Deal with it, little buddy and let those testicles relax just a bit before your next dull blip.

            Good luck in China, mate.

I would have gone the alliterative route.

            “relentless rutagabas”
            “tenacious turnips”
            “persistent parsnips”
            “dogged daikon”

“Sir Turnip” seems to be right, it appears this man DID need help getting out of the rain, maybe it was offered and he refused. Who knows, none of us, but sometimes we do need to take control of a situation.

My father left to go for his walk one July morning, temp was in the 90′s(F), he had dementia, he put on his wool hat, down parka and mittens.

I was in NYC working, I found out when I came home.

And he probably would have been flailing and screaming incoherently….

      • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

        Symbols, man.

The article itself (which is, you know, the TRUTH) states that the cripple got all wet, and the girl got all wet.

As a symbolic gesture, the beggar knows that someone cares for him. As a symbolic gesture, all of China can see her documented concern for a beggar. I’ll agree that symbols are powerful and can shape people’s thinking. Grandpa wen picking up a megaphone and shouting into it:”Don’t worry folks, we’ll get you out” during the Sichuan earthquake was just a symbol, but one that showed that he/the goo-ber-mant cares and can also inspire other people. Maybe.

That’s good, and that’s bad: symbols are just symbols. It doesn’t mean anything in and by itself. The beggar is still a beggar. He didnt’ become famous; and he’s the focus of all this (well, should be).

Symbols: control them, and you control China, land of indirection. It’s like controlling the air in Starcraft: do it, and you are skirmish boss.

You know, you really should get off the whole “ungrateful” shtick. It really is a bit old, and makes you sound like an ignorant pissant.

Given me and Tengu are American, I think we can both honestly tell you that American’s not only come in different flavors, arranging from ungrateful to altruistic, and other countries populations also display the same ungrateful to altruistic behavior, it means that we are all people, with vices ad virtues, and putting a national label on someone else only proves you either irrationally hate a specific nationality, or you have no clue what you are talking about.

For your reference, Americans are also some of the most giving people, and America is one of the largest givers of foreign aid to assist other countries in their times of need, out of any country.

      • Tengu

@Carlos, you need to relax and realize every country is filled with ungrateful bastards, kind old ladies, cute old men, kids who will slice you ear off for whatever change you have in your pocket and psychos will will snatch the life out of you without thinking twice.

When you generalize about ANY country it simply shows you lack any tolerance, any knowledge regarding the varieties of people in the world and any idea that people tend to be inherently decent regardless of their situation.

One constant that pretty much runs through everyone’s life regardless of race, nationality, ethnicity, religion or choice of footwear and accessories…they want to be happy.

When you grasp the concept that we’re ALL just a bunch of bozos sitting on a molten rock hurtling through space and we could be wiped out in the blink of an eye, you may find you’ll enjoy life more, be happier and hopefully lose the anger you have…whatever the origins may be.

Just John is right. Americans in general are pretty decent, not perfect, but decent. Like every other country, we have our share of assholes. No more, no less.

Sometimes we play both sides against the middle politically, not a good policy, but we’re a resourceful bunch of maniacs, we all work hard and we NEVER forget when someone screws with us, are those good qualities or bad qualities…in the long run, who knows!

        Bin Laden wasn’t too thrilled.

BTW the way – it’s spelled “ungrateful.”

A person with a good heart does not need or want to be photographed or rewarded. They do good things because they feel good doing good things, and also just because it is the good and right thing to do. That is part of what makes them good people. (Being good, is its own reward)

I dont think you understand Self-Less behavior, kindness, warmth, unconditional love, and compassion… and because of this, people will treat you the same as you treat them. Shallow, Bitter, Mean, Jealous, and Cold.

      But
Considering we’re all standing here covered in your feces…not so much.

  • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

    I call shenanigans.

I agree that holding an umbrella for a crippled old man is a beautiful sight, but how on earth did the photographer know that she was going to do so?

When you realize something is happening, it is usually happening at that time; conversely, this photographer captured this entire scene before it even happened when she was still standing under cover and getting her umbrella ready.

How did the photographer, standing on the other side of the street, down the street know this was going to happen? Did “the most beautiful girl with an umbrella” point loudly and say, “Look at me! This is a Kodak moment!” before rushing out into the pages of infamy.

This reminds me of the “girl about to jump off a bridge but saved by cop/security guard” in which we see the point of view from behind the ledge girl AND from behind the cop. It’s not just perfect, it’s storyboard perfect.

    • reaver

It isn’t a newspaper photographer, it is just someone on the street. Some things are staged and sometimes the photo comes out just right. But that is one picture in one hundred you take of any given seen.

    • anon

I don’t find it nearly as suspicious as you do. I think the photographer was initially photographing the beggar being caught in the rain. Photos of “look how sad this scene is” are common, and then the girl comes out and tries to help the beggar transforming a “sad” scene into a “heartwarming” one.

However, I’m curious about the final photo that seemingly identifies the girl. Maybe the photographer knew the girl?

      • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

It’s the Chinese internet – we’ll never know. But, staged photos look perfect: they are shots that are unobstructed, can see faces clearly, and to an uneducated person who can’t read or use the internet much it is completely understandable from the first glance.

It’s like Grandpa Wen’s photos: maybe he’s really crying, maybe he’s really “a man of the people”, but the one thing for sure is that it is clearly Grandpa Wen as the focus of attention in any photograph he’s in (visiting patients in the hospital, laughing/crying in the very center of the laobaixing) — all in a perfectly constructed diorama set along an invisable fourth wall so that we, the audience, can have an unfettered look for ourselves.

Anyways, it doesn’t matter: the real issue is the one said in the comment above this one about the Chinese reaction to said “umbrella beauty”.

        • Brett Hunan

Even if its staged, it may have moved some people. In a world where most popular news is about terrible things happening, this little bit of goodness seems to have inspired people.

I know for journalism you must “get to the bottom of the truth”.

Coming from the worlds biggest cynic (me)– “Terrior, don’t be so cynical”

          • travismurphy

im also skeptical, instead of holding the umbrella while he made his way up the street, she should have directed him somewhere under shelter where he could wait out the rain…

          • camlost

If it was staged we could have at least gotten a photo of the front of her wet white shirt. No need for modesty in a publicity stunt.

            oops I did it again.

Acutally given its meaning, can I call you Father Land?

          • Just John

Terroir (French pronunciation: [tɛʁwaʁ]) comes from the word terre “land”. It was originally a French term in wine, coffee and tea used to denote the special characteristics that the geography, geology and climate of a certain place bestowed upon particular varieties.

A terrier is a dog of any one of many breeds or landraces of terrier type, which are typically small, wiry, very active and fearless dogs.

terrior – no such word exists.

@ Bread Human and Jazzed John:

It doesn’t matter what my handle is, and your guys talking about what a name means makes me think you guys are definitely Chinese. It’s just a word that I have used online for a long time and has seen me through maaannny flamings and flame wars, so I have just become accustomed to it.

I’m not offended by the misspelling of my name, I was just trying to make a humorous point.

And if we want to get technical, it’s spelled with a small “t”.

          • Just John

Eh, I think you would do better with “Jizzed John” then “Jazzed John”.

See, Jizz is also known as the secret ingredient for big macs, and the seminal fluid that men produce (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=jizz), where as “jazzed” is more associated with being excited (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=jazzed).

Of the two, sadly, I am a bit nerdy myself, so am rarely “jazzed” about anything that does not come with a geek warning label, but at the same time am very preoccupied with the fairer sex, and in typical Freudian fashion, think about sex probably on the average of every minute.

So, “Jizzed John” would probably fit me better.

So how are the french wines this year?

anyways, speaking of les intre-toob des Chinois, this article confirms what I’ve always thought: up to 96% of all Chinese internet traffic is internal – it’s not an internet, it’s an intranet.

Forget the harmonizers – chinese just don’t have any interest in the world outside their borders. If you’re planning to become internet famous I’m SURE holding an umbrella for someone is not going to be your No. 1 choice. Probably not in top 100 either. I think Terroir has forgotten how many people are running around with cameras these days, and the top phones has 5.0 mp or more now, which makes their photos more than good enough quality for something like this.

      • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

“the top phones has 5.0 mp or more now” VS a crippled beggar pushing himself along in a cart

Yep. Nothing wrong with that comparison. Anyways, I’m not saying this didn’t happen – it’s not the UFO that shut down Chengdu last week – I’m saying that this didn’t happen for the simple reason that we think it happened: that someone would do something out of the goodness of her own heart. eattot said it before on this page, and like Grandpa wen – nothing good is ever done in China unless it is recorded and everyone knows about it.

Oh ladies – you never be anything but beautiful.

Even if you cure cancer, even if you kill a hundred Imperialist Japanese soldiers, even if you become the next leader of China – you will never be anything but beautiful. Because then you will become “abled”, and then what are men to do?

Chinese women: self-imposed flower pots. Can be known to harbor gold from digging, reverse-psychology from ambition, and equality from illusion.

    • GodsHammer

You can sure turn a phrase my friend.

      • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

Didn’t you know this is the reason why Chinese men name their genitals after flowers?

The cultural difference between East and West is that Chinese will put a vase of roses upon a piano, while Westerners will put tulips on an organ.

        • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

How uncouth of me; I meant to say “wang of Wang”.

          • Anon

Another Tengu/John (more nicks, same person) here to ‘below waistise’ the convos, or just yanking chains. Terrior = Terriers = Bush worshippers = non-winnable for party-U.

          • Tengu

            I love his films!

          • Tengu

I could never get used to having mine called “little brother”…

  • nn

She reminds me when I was young. I was compassionate when I was young and did something similar. But I don’t know when I become indifferent gradually. But I still like something pretty like that.

  • MrT

The beggar is her father, she just making sure the money don’t get wet.

  • Cardaver

Beggars an asshole, he should be trying to get under the covered part of the sidewalk, instead of just carrying on straight down the street, getting the girl wetter as she has to follow him around with the umbrella now

    • 2-cents

Gets more sympathy/money this way. Looks like he’s much worse off getting soaked. All about da money

      • Brett Hunan

Pretty sure he’s not as nimble as a cat, being able to dodge left and right just to excape some rain. Rain may be the best of his problems.

    • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

Seeing how that poor guy doesn’t have a cent to his name, I’m sure he would “beg” your pardon.

What the girl did is nice, but all the praises poured on her by netizens are soooo exaggerated.

    • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

      Crystal,
we all love you here. No need to feel jealous of the “world’s most beautiful umbrella-beauty”; we like you for your inner beauty.

      • http://www.lovelovechina.com Crystal

        Ahhh… you are right.
        I was jealous.
I am so ashamed of myself now!

        • http://candosino.wordpress.com terroir

Oh, don’t be! Though you are not an “umbrella beauty”, you are a “comment beauty” and an “avatar beauty”, so chin up, girl!

  • Ryo

    She’s got a nice rack.

  • John Wayne

Wow,,, a very beautiful girl indeed.

  • Jess

Fake, because of the different camera angles!

  • Chris N.

But the beggar still doesn’t have any money..

  • MOSES

This is good but nothing compared to how I kept my people dry. We once had to cross the Red Sea (long long time ago) and our saviour had given me the power to part the Red Sea, allowing my people to cross the massive body of water without a single drop of water on our heads and toes.

    • Rick in China

I Parted the Red Sea (aka Moses) last Friday.

If you wash the sheets the next morning it’s not an issue.

      • PeterScriabin

Hmm, maybe a red towel would be a more desirable sacrifice when invoking this, er, miracle?

    • Ethan JRT

My comment was a bit to short, but all I really wanted to say was…

      Kanye’d.

Those gathered there are from the country’s downtrodden, people with grievances against the government who have made their way to the capital to petition China’s modern-day mandarins.

    • Anon

They only deserve to be called Mandarins if they wear Hanfu. Time to remove that sea of Western suits. Next we know they’ll be wearing top hats.

Look at Jiang Zemin’s time for some quasi Mandarin-ish dress style ideas? Start with serving attendants in low grades of formal hanfu and wusha mao, maybe Imperial ceremonial-armour or Sergeant-at-arms in Chinese armour at least (Taiwan needs a TROOP alongside a Sergeant of arms IMHO, look at the last brawl and the previous ones . . . ), who knows maybe Chinese militray officers could be issued with a set of ‘jian’ and ‘armour’ rather than the Western ones. It’s not antiquated, it’s what you are willing to make of what China has.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdRpkoWrTFg

Finally Chinese culture isn’t truly Marxism nor is it Westernism ande Capitalism. The formal clothes could reflect that, and we’d immediately have a sense that we are viewing a Chinese parliament than a Western one.

  • Sim

If it is a spontaneous gesture then she is truly a beautiful person with a heart of gold. But it is a cruel world where conman targets such kind soul!

  • do_sex_machina

wow, and the ads on the pictures are for “Power Wheel Chairs”

  • gungun

Thanks to you, the girl with the pink umbrella!
Nice to see such a heart warming moment.. :)

  • harlequin

Maybe this has been said before, but why didn’t she just give the guy her umbrella instead of wasting her time? I mean, the guy’s hands are still good, no?

    • Nikolodian

It looked like it, but then how could he push himself along on his wheel-thingy?

What I wonder is what was the result? It looked like he was just going straight along the road. Did he actually make it to shelter or not and why wasn’t there a picture of that?

  • Suijen

Why is everyone surprised that there are picture-perfect moments, especially in this day and age? One can capture a picture-perfect moment in Iwo Jima or a sudden kiss between a sailor and a nurse during a parade, but it’s impossible to believe in an act of charity? Regular viewers of Chinasmack should already be exposed to dozens of these picture-perfect moments. Brother Sharp ring a bell?

  • URMOMM

    very nice

how about give him this 20 yuan umbrella?

so he might dont need this big show and stay dry the next rain

  • Dan Danger

    Wonderful young lady.

  • robin yates

she is a truly good woman,,,no thought for herself just the old crippled beggar,,, all it takes is one person to make a move, others watch and are ashamed

  • wae lee
